Provides a comprehensive guide to the use of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) on environmentally significant organic compounds This book presents a library of mass spectra of 1,725 biologically and environmentally important organic compounds, in the form of their trimethylsilyl derivatives (TMS), as well as their linear temperature programmed chromatographic retention indices, RI, whose values are in the range of 700-4700 index units. Of the compounds presented, more than 60% of compounds have not previously been characterized by their mass spectra, and more than 70% not previously been characterized by their RI values. Some of these compounds, never before analysed via MS and GC, were detected by the author’s team in plant tissues. The first chapters of the book are devoted to the methodology and practice of sample preparation, as well as to mass spectrometry considerations. They contain the discussion of possible complications and limitations of the method. The book includes lists of chemical compounds in alphabetical order, as well as in the order of their retention indices which facilitates the search for parameters of interest. Every compound in the book...
Part I covers modern advances in the determination ofglycoprotein structure and in the biosynthesis of mammalian, bacterial, yeast, plant and insect glycoproteins. There are alsotwo chapters on functional aspects (glycoprotein hormones andcollagens). The content of the volume is very comprehensive in that, mostcontributors have focussed on discussing, in depth, the wealthof most recent advances in their field, and referring to previousreviews of older work for background information. This method caneffectively produce a very wide subject coverage in a smallernumber of chapters/volumes. The volume is an importantinformation source for all glycobiologist researchers (seniorinvestigators, post-doctoral fellows and graduate students), andas a good, comprehensive, reference text for scientists working inthe life sciences.
This study of a thirteenth-century dwelling on Egypt's Red Sea Coast draws on multiple lines of evidence--including texts excavated at the site--to reconstruct a history of the structure and the people who dwelt within. The inhabitants participated in Nile Valley-Red Sea-Indian Ocean trade, transported Ḥāǧǧ pilgrims, sent grain to Mecca and Medina, and wrote sermons and amulets for the local faithful. These activities are detailed in the documents and fleshed out in the botanical, faunal, artifact, and stratigraphic evidence from the University of Chicago's excavations (1978-82). This compound eventually consisted of two houses and a row of storerooms and became the center of mercantile activity at Quseir al-Qadim. Over time, as the number of named individuals who received shipping notes addressed to the "warehouse of Abū Mufarij" increased, living rooms and storerooms were added to accommodate this expansion of commerce. While most merchants were dealing in textiles, dates, and grains, additional commodities traded included perfumes, gemstone-decorated textiles, resist-dyed textiles, and porcelains. Specialist studies by Steven Goodman on the avian faunal remains and Wilma...
Braving the Currents systematically identifies, applies, and evaluates criteria to define success in complex multi-party natural resource disputes. The authors elucidate the full range of criteria for defining success that researchers, stakeholders, and practitioners have relied on as they have participated in, and reflected upon, environmental conflict resolution (CR) efforts. They examine 28 "success" criteria from many angles, present a method for systematically considering all the elements necessary for successful environmental CR, and then apply this analytic framework to eight specific western U.S. water conflicts. The criteria are assessed in terms of their accessibility, reliability, validity, and overall usefulness in evaluating specific conflict cases and different resolution methods. The book concludes with observations about successfully resolved disputes, a summary of what the authors have learned through their extensive evaluations, and a discussion of how public policies can contribute to dispute prevention and management. While the cases focus on water conflicts, their processes and assessments are applicable to a wide body of cases. At the suggestion of academic...

This book includes numerous calculations for the many specific examples included within. I have included the many calculated examples to provide the reader with immediate justifications for the numerous concepts described. This was not done to belittle or talk down to the reader but rather to give the reader a clear sense of the plausibility for the propulsion methods and performance capabilities thereof. Interstellar travel at the many specific highly relativistic velocities contemplated in this bookand, in some cases, extreme vehicle massesis still a very controversial subject but nonetheless a highly mathematicalized and intelligible subject. My hope and intention is to thus clearly inspire and show the reader the plausibility of the concepts by providing the reader with proper evidence through his or her simple inspection of the formulas and values included in the computations. Some speculative physics is included, which is based on commonly presented theoretical constructs.

This book subtitled The Chemistry of Initiation of Non-Ringed Compounds/Monomers is the second Volume [Vol. (II)] of the book titled The New Frontiers in Sciences, Engineering and the Arts. For a compound to undergo Initiation, it must be such that has what is called Activation center(s) wherein there are three kinds of many types. When such compounds are activated, they can be made to undergo either polymeric or chemical reactions. When made to undergo polymeric reactions, the compounds are said to be Addition monomers. It is only when the Initiation Step is favoured by the monomer using an Initiator, that the Propagation Step begins, just as when a child is born into our world, the child begins to grow. If the Initiation Step is not favoured, due to presence of what are called Transfer Species, then chemical reactions take place to give non-polymeric products under Equilibrium mechanism conditions. There are different kinds and types of Transfer Species. They are so important to the point where they indeed embrace the first law in Chemistry, that which has been called The law of Conservation of transfer of transfer species, almost analogous to the Conservation laws in...

The Bodie Mining District was established in 1860 after the discovery of gold deposits in the area. Bodie’s largest boom ended ust over twenty years later, but the town survived into the twentieth century supported by a few small but steady mines. Mining ended with World War II. What remained of the town became a state park in 1964. In Bodie’s Gold, author Marguerite Sprague uncovers the original sources of information whenever possible, from the first mining claims to interviews with former Bodieites. Enhanced with numerous historic photographs and extracts from newspapers of that period, as well as by the reminiscences of former residents, the book offers a fascinating account of life in a Gold Rush boomtown.

This monograph comprises the final publication of a study supported by the British Institute of Persian Studies and undertaken by Seth Priestman and Derek Kennet at the University of Durham. The work presents and analyses an assemblage of just under 17,000 sherds of pottery and associated paper archives resulting from one of the largest and most comprehensive surveys ever undertaken on the historic archaeology of southern Iran. The survey was undertaken by Andrew George Williamson (1945–1975), a doctoral student at Oxford University between 1968 and 1971, at a time of great progress and rapid advance in the archaeological exploration of Iran. The monograph provides new archaeological evidence on the long-term development of settlement in Southern Iran, in particular the coastal region, from the Sasanian period to around the 17th century. The work provides new insights into regional settlement patterns and changing ceramic distribution, trade and use. A large amount of primary data is presented covering an extensive area from Minab to Bushehr along the coast and inland as far as Sirjan. This includes information on a number of previously undocumented archaeological sites, as well ...

Quantum chemistry uses the Schrödinger equation to predict properties of molecules and their course in chemical reactions. From the 1920 to 1960s, it handled the complicated mathematical equations of quantum mechanics for molecules. Now, it can solve complicated problems through computer technology. It also makes real-time calculations with new concepts and simplifications. Novel approaches will be needed in quantum chemistry to promote research field beyond a set of techniques available in computer programs for showing many pressing problems of humanity. Currently, it is available to everyone to use popular free chemistry software packages. First generate new ideas to explore and produce truly novel results with their capabilities. Since 1960, remarkable advances are observed in the development and availability of computers for making all-important contributions to the solutions of critical problems in chemistry. One of the most challenges in chemistry is the prediction of the folded structure of peptide and protein synthesis in different chemical environments. It is highly interdisciplinary field of research, linking biology and biochemistry fields, like analytical, inorganic,...

It is particularly appropriate that a volume concerned with dye chemistry should be included in the series Topics in Applied Chemistry. The development of the dye industry has been inexorably linked not only with the development of the chemical industry but also with organic chemistry itself since the middle of the last century. The position of dye chemistry at the forefront of chemical 1945 and more markedly so during the last advance has declined somewhat since 15 years, with pharmaceutical and medicinal chemistry assuming an increasingly prominent position. Nevertheless, dye production still accounts for a significant portion of the business of most major chemical companies. The field of dye chemistry has stimulated the publication of many books over the years but surprisingly few have concentrated on or even included the practical aspects of dye synthesis and application. Thus, the present volume is designed to fulfill that need and provide the reader with an account of advances indye chemistry, concentrating on more recent work and giving, in a single volume, synthetic detail and methods of application of the most important classes, information which will be invaluable to...
Bjarke Frellesvig describes the development of the Japanese language from its recorded beginnings until the present day as reflected by the written sources and historical record. Beginning with a description of the oldest attested stage of the language, Old Japanese (approximately the eighth century AD), and then tracing the changes which occurred through the Early Middle Japanese (800–1200), Late Middle Japanese (1200–1600) and the Modern Japanese (1600–onwards) periods, a complete internal history of the language is examined and discussed. This account provides a comprehensive study of how the Japanese language has developed and adapted, providing a much needed resource for scholars. A History of the Japanese Language is invaluable to all those interested in the Japanese language and also students of language change generally.
