The Things We Carry

The Things We Carry

Autor: Courtney Adams Wooten , Jacob Babb , Kristi Murray Costello , Kate Navickas

Número de Páginas: 350

Emotional labor is not adequately talked about or addressed by writing program administrators. The Things We Carry makes this often-invisible labor visible, demonstrates a variety of practical strategies to navigate it reflectively, and opens a path for further research. Particularly timely, this collection considers how writing program administrators work when their schools or regions experience crisis situations. The book is broken into three sections: one emphasizing the WPA’s own work identity, one on fostering community in writing programs, and one on balancing the professional and personal. Chapters written by a diverse range of authors in different institutional and WPA contexts examine the roles of WPAs in traumatic events, such as mass shootings and natural disasters, as well as the emotional labor WPAs perform on a daily basis, such as working with students who have been sexually assaulted or endured racist, sexist, homophobic, and otherwise disenfranchising interactions on campus. The central thread in this collection focuses on “preserving” by acknowledging that emotions are neither good nor bad and that they must be continually reflected upon as WPAs consider...

Online Worlds: Convergence of the Real and the Virtual

Online Worlds: Convergence of the Real and the Virtual

Autor: William Sims Bainbridge

Número de Páginas: 317

William Sims Bainbridge Virtual worlds are persistent online computer-generated environments where people can interact, whether for work or play, in a manner comparable to the real world. The most prominent current example is World of Warcraft (Corneliussen and Rettberg 2008), a massively multiplayer online game with 11 million s- scribers. Some other virtual worlds, notably Second Life (Rymaszewski et al. 2007), are not games at all, but Internet-based collaboration contexts in which people can create virtual objects, simulated architecture, and working groups. Although interest in virtual worlds has been growing for at least a dozen years, only today it is possible to bring together an international team of highly acc- plished authors to examine them with both care and excitement, employing a range of theories and methodologies to discover the principles that are making virtual worlds increasingly popular and may in future establish them as a major sector of human-centered computing.

Breeding of Ornamental Crops: Potted Plants and Shrubs

Autor: Jameel M. Al-khayri , Shri Mohan Jain , Muneeb Ahmad Wani

Número de Páginas: 628

Flowers and other ornamental plants are used for all occasions to meet consumers demands preferably novel flowers traits, e.g., fragrance, flower color and shape, early flowering, less water consumption, long shelf-life. The worldwide floricultural industry is worth over 50 billion Euros and can serve as a ‘food security’, socio-economic impact, and generate employment. Ornamental industry is regarded as one of the fastest growing farm industries. This industry is sustained through novelty, thus there is increasing demand on plant breeders in both public and private sectors to fulfil consumer’s needs. Biotechnological approaches such as genetic transformation, genomics, nanotechnology, and gene editing are well suited for designing custom-made novel traits of flowers benefiting both ornamental and cosmetic industry. Moreover, micropropagation is well exploited commercially for large-scale plant production along with vertical and digital farming, and artificial intelligence especially by the floriculture industry. This book focuses on advances in breeding strategies of diverse range of ornamental plants. It is composed of 2 parts, Part I Ornamental potted plants, and Part II...

Two-Photon Polymerization on Metal Surfaces for Structuring Moulding Tools

Two-Photon Polymerization on Metal Surfaces for Structuring Moulding Tools

Autor: Emely Harnisch

Número de Páginas: 278

Given the fact of the increasing meaning of individual and functional micro- or nanostructures, it is of high interest to open up two-photon polymerization (TPP) as a structuring technology for production. TPP offers real 3D capability while providing a high precision, so arbitrary geometries with optical, photonic or biological func-tionalities can be realized. Thus, the aim is to use TPP as a mastering technology for metal substrates that serve as tools for injection moulding.

The Ocean of God

The Ocean of God

Autor: Roland Faber

Número de Páginas: 264

‘The Ocean of God’conveys the proposition that the future of religions, if they will not want to contribute to the destruction of humanity, will become transreligious. Based on the assumption that the spiritual impulse of humanity cannot simply be eradicated, religiosity will persist in transreligious forms, as secularizations, naturalizations and transhumanist dreams only envision such transformations, but fall short in their ability to replace the force of spirituality to further civilized peace of human existence on Earth and its future in evolutionary, ecological and cosmological dimensions. In relating the contributions of religious pluralism to the concept of the unity of religions, which have arisen in this “new axial age” for overcoming the checkered history of religions in furthering peace, the program of a polyphilic pluralism with its transreligious discourse, based on the insight of the fundamental relativity of (religious) truth and the special contributions of process philosophy and theology as well as the Bahá'í universe of thought, analyses and projects a new religiosity or spirit enabling religions to overcome their deepest motives of strife and warfare.

The Periodontium

The Periodontium

Autor: Hubert E. Schroeder

Número de Páginas: 424

In their contribution to the first edition of this Handbook, entitled "The Teeth," LEHNER and PLENK (1936) discussed the tissues constituting the "perio dontium" rather briefly. In contrast to the detailed paragraphs dealing with, for example, enamel and dentine, the section (about 40 pages and 20 illustra tions, mostly drawings) devoted to periodontal tissues failed to provide a factual review and summary of the contemporary knowledge and latest developments in research on the various components of the periodontium. Instead, much of the text was an attempt to arrive at conclusions from often purely semantic speculations, playing the various schools of thought against each other, provid ing arguments in favor of the authors' views and arguments for the feasibility and probability of accepting or rejecting the often diverse opinions, while the reader was referred to the already existing literature for factual details. Since 1936, however, factual details ofthe structural biology of the periodon tal tissues, i. e. their development, structure, function, and physiology, have been greatly extended and have been internationally accepted. With much less opin ionated belief to cope with, ...

Xenotransplantation

Xenotransplantation

Autor: David K.c. Cooper , Ejvind Kemp , Keith Reemtsma , D.j.g. White

Número de Páginas: 583

The cover of this book depicts a Lamassu, one of the "fabulous" beasts of mythology [1]. Like many similar creatures, such as the Chimera, Griffon, Hippocamp, and Cockatrice, the body of the Lamassu was clearly a combination of structures derived from sev eral different species - in other words, it provides a highly success ful example of xenotransplantation. But in selecting a symbol of xenotransplantation to grace the cover of this volume, why choose the Lamassu in preference to the other ancient beasts? The reason is that the Lamassu appears to have been endowed with a much Fig. I. Homer described the Chimera as consisting of a lion's foreparts, a goat in the middle, and a serpent's hind parts VIII Foreword Fig. 2. The Griffon had the foreparts of an eagle, and the rear, tail, and hindlegs of a lion. Its eagle-like head had pointed, upstanding ears like those of an ass. Feathers grew upon its head, neck and chest, and the rest of its body was covered in leonine fur more benign and desirable character than many of its mythologi cal associates. For example, reliable reports state that the Chimera (Fig. 1) hitherto the animal most commonly selected to symbolize xenografting -...

Displacement Interferometry Applied to Acoustics and Gravitation

Displacement Interferometry Applied to Acoustics and Gravitation

Autor: Carl Barus

Número de Páginas: 160

From the PREFACE. The experiments of the present volume are either direct applications of displacement interferometry or they embody the correlative work which has grown out of such applications, often at widely different times. In the arrangement of the chapters it has therefore been expedient to depart from chronological order in favor of an arrangement of subjects which belong together. In a former report I had already used a U-tube in connection with the interferometer, but the design of the apparatus was limited in scope. In the present paper (Chapter I) the open mercury manometer is made directly available for pressure measurement, and as the attainable sensitiveness is easily a few hundred thousandths of a centimeter of mercury per fringe displacement, it is well worth while to see what can be gained by using it. The applications to air thermometry on a micrometric scale and an attempt to revive the old absolute electrometer in Chapter II are merely incidental....

Lipids and Biomembranes of Eukaryotic Microorganisms

Lipids and Biomembranes of Eukaryotic Microorganisms

Autor: Joseph Erwin

Número de Páginas: 371

Lipids and Biomembranes of Eukaryotic Microorganisms synthesizes the state of knowledge for eukaryotic microorganisms and relates this knowledge to microbial membranes. This book examines each of the major classes of lipids—sterols, fatty acids, phospholipids, and sulfolipids—separately. In each case an attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive summary and to evaluate critically the literature on the occurrence and biosynthesis of these compounds in yeasts, fungi, algae, and protozoa. Physiological functions of these lipids, particularly their role in the membranes of the organisms, are described. In some cases attention has been called to the possible usefulness of lipids as taxonomic criteria. Experimental systems for studying the relation between the structure of lipids and their function in biomembranes are also discussed. These systems include the photosynthetic membranes in organisms such as Euglena, Chlorella, and Chlamydomonas in which the formation of the chloroplasts is susceptible to experimental control; and fatty acid auxotrophic mutants of yeasts and Neurospora in which the fatty acid composition of the membrane lipids can be altered by the experimenter....
