Profitable Offices

Profitable Offices

Autor: Doug Yarrington

Número de Páginas: 408

During the crucial period of its formation, the opposing forces of corruption and anticorruption shaped Venezuela’s new national state and its relationship with society. National strongman Juan Vicente Gómez, who ruled from 1908 to 1935, fastened control over key areas of the economy, extracted wealth from the Venezuelan people, and distributed resources to favorites. Utilizing a variety of discursive strategies, Venezuelans denounced this profiteering, and in 1945 reformers seized power in an attempt to create a new political system free from the last remnants of Gómez’s government. The tragic unraveling of that attempt at reform led to the continuation of corruption, setting the stage for the political crises of the late twentieth century. Combining methods from the humanities and social sciences, Profitable Offices offers a fresh interpretation of Venezuelan history during the first half of the twentieth century while also pioneering a new approach to the historical study of corruption and the struggle against it.

Literature of Crisis

Literature of Crisis

Autor: Olga Bezhanova

Número de Páginas: 219

The book explores novels, essays and poetry published by Spanish writers in response to the global economic crisis that began in 2008. Spain has been experiencing the crisis in a particularly painful way, and the artistic response to these traumatic events has been powerful and abundant. The literature of the crisis is pointing to the probability that the crisis is not a temporary problem that will be resolved once and for all if correct economic measures are taken. To the contrary, there is every reason to believe that the losses in long-term employment, the growing precariousness of work, the increased economic insecurity, the citizens' disillusionment with the capacity of democratic governments to withstand the pressures of global capital, the erosion of the welfare state, and the explosive growth in inequality that we associate with the crisis are not likely to be reversed. Spanish artists are exploring the reasons behind Spain's particularly painful experience of the crisis and, at the same time, are placing the suffering that the crisis is causing in Spain within the context of global developments that are ensuring its durability. Essays by Antonio Muñoz Molina and Lucía...

Inhibitors of Protein–Protein Interactions

Inhibitors of Protein–Protein Interactions

Autor: Ali Tavassoli

Número de Páginas: 357

Protein-protein interactions (PPI) are at the heart of the majority of cellular processes, and are frequently dysregulated or usurped in disease. Given this central role, the inhibition of PPIs has been of significant interest as a means of treating a wide variety of diseases. However, there are inherent challenges in developing molecules capable of disrupting the relatively featureless and large interfacial areas involved. Despite this, there have been a number of successes in this field in recent years using both traditional drug discovery approaches and innovative, interdisciplinary strategies using novel chemical scaffolds. This book comprehensively covers the various aspects of PPI inhibition, encompassing small molecules, peptidomimetics, cyclic peptides, stapled peptides and macrocycles. Illustrated throughout with successful case studies, this book provides a holistic, cutting-edge view of the subject area and is ideal for chemical biologists and medicinal chemists interested in developing PPI inhibitors.

E. coli Gene Expression Protocols

Autor: Peter E. Vaillancourt

Número de Páginas: 347

Peter E. Vaillancourt presents a collection of popular and emerging methodologies that take advantage of E. coli's ability to quickly and inexpensively express recombinant proteins. The authors focus on two areas of interest: the use of E. coli vectors and strains for production of pure, functional protein, and the use of E. coli as host for the functional screening of large collections of proteins and peptides. Among the cutting-edge techniques demonstrated are those for rapid high-level expression and purification of soluble and functional recombinant protein and those essential to functional genomics, proteomics, and protein engineering.
