Motherland and Progress

Autor: József Sisa

Número de Páginas: 996

In the 19th century Hungary witnessed unprecedented social, economic and cultural development. The country became an equal partner within the Dual Monarchy when the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 was concluded. Architecture and all forms of design flourished as never before. A distinctly Central European taste emerged, in which the artistic presence of the German-speaking lands was augmented by the influence of France and England. As this process unfolded, attempts were made to find a uniquely Hungarian form, based on motifs borrowed from peasant art as well as real (or fictitious) historical antecedents. "Motherland and Progress" – the motto of 19th-century Hungarian reformers – reflected the programme embraced by the country in its drive to define its identity and shape its future.

Forever Faithful

Autor: Henry A. Fischer

Número de Páginas: 566

This is the third in a series of genealogical studies of German families that emigrated to the Kingdom of Hungary in the early 18th century and settled in Somogy County. Kötcse is the oldest of the three major German Lutheran parishes that evolved and numerous families from Kötcse were instrumental in the establishment of the other two. The family histories of those who settled in the parish of Somogydöröcske are included in the volume: Dörnberg: In the Shadow of the Josefsberg; and those from the parish of Ecsény in From Toleration to Expulsion that both preceded this publication. In addition to the genealogical information the author provides the historical context and other information vital to an understanding of the lifestyle, traditions and ultimate destiny of their sojourn in Hungary and beyond.

The History of East-Central European Eugenics, 1900-1945

Autor: Marius Turda

Número de Páginas: 659

The History of East-Central European Eugenics, 1900-1945 redefines the European history of eugenics by exploring the ideological transmission of eugenics internationally and its application locally in East-Central Europe. It includes 100 primary sources translated from the East-Central European languages into English for the first time and key contributions from leading scholars in the field from around Europe. This volume examines the main eugenic organisations, as well as individuals and policies that shaped eugenics in Austria, Poland, the former Czechoslovakia, the former Yugoslavia, Hungary and Romania. It also explores the ways in which ethnic minorities interacted with national and international eugenics discourses to advance their own aims and ambitions, whilst providing a comparative analysis of the emergence and development of eugenics in East-Central Europe more generally. Complete with a glossary of terms, a list of all eugenic societies and journals from these countries, as well as a comprehensive bibliography, The History of East-Central European Eugenics, 1900-1945 is a pivotal reference work for students, researchers and academics interested in East-Central Europe...

The Origins of the Baptist Movement Among the Hungarians

Autor: George Alex Kish

Número de Páginas: 497

This study of the origins of the Baptist movement among the Hungarians examines the two attempts to establish a sustained Baptist mission in the Kingdom of Hungary during the nineteenth century: the first unsuccessful attempt begun in 1846 and the second attempt begun in 1873, which resulted in a sustained Baptist presence in Hungary. The primary question the study addresses is why the first attempt came to naught while the second attempt quickly flourished. Related to this is the question of whether any organic connection exists between the two Baptist mission endeavors. In answering these questions interesting themes concerning the intersection of Christian mission, socio-political concerns, and cultural-linguistic tensions are addressed.

Álljon itt egy idézet Sebestyén Ádám 1996. január 24-i temetésén dr. Andrásfalvy Bertalannak, a Magyar Néprajzi Társaság elnökének beszédéből: "Sebestyén Ádám azoknak a példaképe lehet, akiket a sors nem kímélt és mégis saját erejükből, és isten segedelmével ennek a népnek nagyjaivá lettek. Igen... ezek tartják meg a népet, akik felmutatják értékét és kincsét, áldozatos munkával összegyűjtik mindazt, ami minket magyarrá tesz... S ezeken a műveken, az ő munkásságán fogunk tanulni, fogjuk tovább élni a nekünk kijelölt életet..."

Morte, la bête

Autor: Philippe Casanova

Racial Science in Hitler's New Europe, 1938-1945

Autor: Anton Weiss-wendt , Rory Yeomans

Número de Páginas: 335

In Racial Science in Hitler’s New Europe, 1938–1945, international scholars examine the theories of race that informed the legal, political, and social policies aimed against ethnic minorities in Nazi-dominated Europe. The essays explicate how racial science, preexisting racist sentiments, and pseudoscientific theories of race that were preeminent in interwar Europe ultimately facilitated Nazi racial designs for a “New Europe.” The volume examines racial theories in a number of European nation-states in order to understand racial thinking at large, the origins of the Holocaust, and the history of ethnic discrimination in each of those countries. The essays, by uncovering neglected layers of complexity, diversity, and nuance, demonstrate how local discourse on race paralleled Nazi racial theory but had unique nationalist intellectual traditions of racial thought. Written by rising scholars who are new to English-language audiences, this work examines the scientific foundations that central, eastern, northern, and southern European countries laid for ethnic discrimination, the attempted annihilation of Jews, and the elimination of other so-called inferior peoples.

Número de Páginas: 287

Chapters of the city's history. From the mid-19th to the early 20th century The joint work of our historians based on proven facts offers a reference reading for all those interested in the city of Arad and all our cities. In this work are presented the details of the contribution of our predecessors, a contribution that spans several centuries, to the founding and development of the city, details that have been ignored by others and that are finally put in their place. The chapters of the book tell us about the formation of Arad and the process by which it evolved from a simple settlement on the banks of the Mures to a modern European city. At the same time we get a faithful description of the urbanisation process through which the responsible citizens and the city leaders of that time created the image of today's Arad and laid its social and economic foundations. The authors introduce the reader to the atmosphere of our city by presenting the development of the institutional system led by personalities who defined the intellectual and cultural development of Arad. The fruit of the work of our forefathers, Arad is a city with a European character, with a cultural heritage of...
