Camion Blanc

Autor: Thierry Jourdain

The Phenomenology of Religious Belief

Autor: Michael J. Shapiro

Número de Páginas: 225

In The Phenomenology of Religious Belief, the renowned philosopher Michael J. Shapiro investigates how art – and in particular literature and film – can impact upon both traditional interpretations and critical studies of religious beliefs and experiences. In doing so, he examines the work of prolific and award-winning writers such as Toni Morrison, Philip K. Dick and Robert Coover. By placing their work in conjunction with critical analyses of media by the likes of Ingmar Bergman and Pier Paolo Pasolini and combining it with the work of groundbreaking thinkers such as George Canguilhem, Giorgio Agamben and Slavoj Žižek, Shapiro takes a truly interdisciplinary approach to the question of how life should be lived. His assessment of phenomenological subjectivity also leads him to question the nature of political theology and extend the criticism of Pauline theology.

The Mountain Cage

Autor: Pamela Sargent

Número de Páginas: 348

Thirteen stories of impossible futures and otherworldly adventure, from one of science fiction’s most thoughtful authors In “Hillary Orbits Venus,” a young Hillary Rodham pursues her childhood dream of becoming an astronaut, while in the Nebula Award–winning “Danny Goes to Mars,” former US vice president Dan Quayle embarks on the first expedition to Mars. “The Sleeping Serpent” reveals what might have happened if the Mongols had conquered all of Europe and then crossed the Atlantic to the New World, “Collectors” follows an American expatriate in France during a most unusual alien invasion, and “All Rights” offers a humorous look at a writer and a literary agent forced to negotiate deals in the multiverse. Collecting and Historical Consciousness in Early Nineteenth-Century Germany

Autor: Susan A. Crane

Número de Páginas: 214

This provocative book challenges long-held assumptions about the nature of historical consciousness in Germany. Susan A. Crane argues that the ever-more-elaborate preservation of the historical may actually reduce the likelihood that history can be experienced with the freshness and individuality characteristic of the early collectors and preservationists. Her book is both a study of the emergence in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Germany of a distinctively modern conception of historical consciousness, and a meditation on what was lost as historical thought became institutionalized and professionalized. Public forms of remembering the past which are familiar today, such as historical museums and historical preservation, have surprisingly recent origins. In Germany, caring about the past took on these distinctively new forms after the Napoleonic wars. The Brothers Grimm gathered fairy tales and documented the origins of the German language. Historical preservationists collected documents and artifacts and organized the conservation of cathedrals and other historic buildings. Collectors formed historical societies and created Germany's historical museums. No single...

The Secrets of North Brother Island

Autor: John Kenny Crane

Número de Páginas: 437

The Secrets of North Brother Island is about the unsolved disaster in 1904 of the burning and sinking of the pleasure boat General Slocum, the worst nonmilitary disaster in American history before September 11, 2001. It is often called the forgotten disaster because of the sinking of the Titanic in 1912 and the outbreak of World War I in 1914. However, nearly 1100 perished on the Slocum, half of them children, in what was to have been a church picnic. The captain ran it aground on North Brother Island despite the fact that the fi re broke out beside Rikers Island, equipped with a full fi re-fi ghting brigade. Crane relates it to the Civil War forty years earlier and revenge against General Slocum by one man he caused to be imprisoned in Andersonville. These pyromaniacs are also related to the record-setting fi res between 1900 and 1911, such as The Triangle Shirtwaist fi re.

A Strange Whim of the Sea

Autor: Tim Loughman

Número de Páginas: 324

On January 16, 1944, the submarine rescue vessel USS Macaw ran aground at Midway Atoll while attempting to get a towing line to the stranded submarine USS Flier. The Flier was pulled free six days later, but another three weeks of salvage efforts plagued by rough seas and equipment failures failed to dislodge the Macaw. On February 12, amid huge waves, the ship began to slip aft into deeper water. As night fell and the Macaw slowly sank, the twenty-two sailors on board—ship's captain Paul W. Burton, his executive officer, and twenty enlisted men—sought refuge in the pilothouse, but by 2:30 a.m., that compartment had flooded almost entirely. Burton gave the order to open the portside door and make for the foremast. Three men climbed it but most of the others were swept overboard. Five of them died, including Burton. Three sailors from the base at Midway also lost their lives in two unauthorized rescue attempts. Drawing on survivors' contemporaneous written statements and interviews conducted over a span of thirty years, A Strange Whim of the Sea: The Wreck of the USS Macaw traces the ship's service from its launch on San Francisco Bay to its disastrous final days at Midway....
