"Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. They accomplish this by implementing management techniques and tactics to enhance firm performance. #2 The amount of capital committed to private equity funds has grown exponentially over the past quarter century. Private equity enjoyed its first boom during the 1980s, and by the late 1990s, the amount of capital committed to private equity was at an all-time high. #3 Private equity involves taking a company that is publicly traded and making it private, thereby giving the managers more control and flexibility. #4 The third technique is known as governance engineering, and it refers to the increased involvement of private equity firms in the governance of their portfolio companies compared to the board of directors of public companies."

Diagnoses in Assyrian and Babylonian Medicine

Autor: Jo Ann Scurlock , Burton Andersen

Número de Páginas: 916

To date, the pathbreaking medical contributions of the early Mesopotamians have been only vaguely understood. Due to the combined problems of an extinct language, gaps in the archeological record, the complexities of pharmacy and medicine, and the dispersion of ancient tablets throughout the museums of the world, it has been nearly impossible to get a clear and comprehensive view of what medicine was really like in ancient Mesopotamia. The collaboration of medical expert Burton R. Andersen and cuneiformist JoAnn Scurlock makes it finally possible to survey this collected corpus and discern magic from experimental medicine in Ashur, Babylon, and Nineveh. Diagnoses in Assyrian and Babylonian Medicine is the first systematic study of all the available texts, which together reveal a level of medical knowledge not matched again until the nineteenth century A.D. Over the course of a millennium, these nations were able to develop tests, prepare drugs, and encourage public sanitation. Their careful observation and recording of data resulted in a description of symptoms so precise as to enable modern identification of numerous diseases and afflictions.

Civil Servants and Their Constitutions

Autor: John Anthony Rohr

Número de Páginas: 236

Public administration as an American profession originated in the early twentieth century with urban reformers advocating the application of scientific and business practices to rehabilitate corrupt city governments. That approach transformed governance in the United States but also guaranteed recurrent debate over the proper role of public administrators, who must balance the often contradictory demands of efficiency and politically defined notions of the public good. Currently the business approach holds sway. Legitimated by Al Gore's National Performance Review, the New Public Management movement promotes entrepreneurs over civil servants, performance over process, decentralization over centralization, and flexibility over rules. John Rohr demurs, arguing that the movement goes too far in downplaying the distinctively American challenges arising from the separated powers principle. Consequently, the NPM alienates public management from its natural home—a nation-state established within a constitutional order. According to Rohr, "nothing is more fundamental to governance than a constitution; and therefore to stress the constitutional character of administration is to establish ...
