Forages, Volume 1

Autor: Michael Collins , C. Jerry Nelson , Kenneth J. Moore , Robert F. Barnes

Número de Páginas: 767

Forages, Volume I, Seventh Edition is the most comprehensive text available for teachers of undergraduate Forages courses. This edition will provide students with a good balance of scientific principles, to aid in integrating the concepts they learn, and practical information on forage identification, plant characteristics, management, and utilization that can be used by forage management practitioners. Grassland ecosystems are extremely complex, including the plant/animal interface as well as the soil/climate/forage interface and the text must support understanding and integration of all of these considerations. The coverage of the science behind the plant characteristics and responses make the book applicable in many parts of the world, while other region-specific management information relates mainly to North America. This edition has been updated to address emerging areas of study, including the use of forage plants as bioenergy crops. The editors also address the renewed national interest in environmental issues such as water quality, global climate change and eutrophication in the Gulf. This edition also addresses the role of forages for wildlife habitat and food sources,...

Horse Pasture Management

Autor: Paul H. Sharpe

Número de Páginas: 634

Horse Pasture Management, Second Edition provides updated coverage on strategies for managing behavior, grouping, environments and feeding needs of grazing horses. Sections cover the structure, function and identification of forages, continuing into nutritional value of pasture plants. Management of soil, the function of a pasture ecosystem and management of plants in a pasture is covered next, followed by forage yield determination, horse grazing behavior, feed choices of horses, management of grazing horses, and how to calculate how many horses should be grazing relative to land size. Advantages of grazing more than one species of animal are described. Management of hay and silage are included since year-round grazing is not possible on many horse farms. Several chapters deal with interactions of a horse farm with the environment, including climate and weather and other living things. The book also covers strategies for managing manure, erosion, and water quality. It is ideal for researchers, scientists and students involved in animal science, specifically equine studies. Agriculturists, equine managers and veterinarians will also find this book useful. - Includes information on ...

Agroecological Practices To Enhance Resilience Of Farming Systems

Autor: Fabio Gresta , Moritz Von Cossel , Danilo Scordia

Número de Páginas: 204

Resource over-exploitation coupled with climate change has increased the urgency to act for preserving agroecosystems and their sustainability. Unlike conventional agriculture, agroecology addresses the current challenges of farming systems, harnessing synergy with natural, social and human resources in both time and space to produce food sustainably. Several strategies addressing climate and environmental specific objectives call for agroecological practices to enhance the resilience of agroecosystems and to formulate transition pathways towards sustainable food systems. In the coming decades, the resilience of agriculture will be challenged by extreme climate change events, such as increased temperature, drought, evapotranspiration, and wind, among others, altering the conditions for cropland species. This Research Topic will explore this hypothesis, aiming to disseminate insights from research as evidence of the effectiveness of agroecological practices to enhance the resiliency of agroecosystems and counteract the detrimental effects of climate change.

Optimising Management Practices to Secure Grassland Agroecosystems' Sustainability

Autor: Zhou Li , Yuan Li , Bin Yao , Carmen Carmona

Número de Páginas: 211

The world is currently experiencing increasing pressure on the environment, with soil health and food security rising on the agenda. Conventional agricultural management practices have led to the systems being unable to maintain high productivity and quality under the original input level, worsening soil health, and weakening the ecological function of agricultural soils, especially the ability to adapt to climate change. Grassland farming uses legumes as well as grasses in agriculture. Grasses and/or grass/legume mixtures are used as feed for livestock and to maintain the health of land resources. Integrating grassland agriculture into a farming system provides a number of important benefits to farmers and society. Benefits of grassland agriculture include reducing soil and water erosion, providing high-quality feed for livestock, securing soil fertility and biodiversity, facilitating soil carbon sequestration, enhance agroecosystem productivity, sustainability, stability, and resistance.
