Code-Switching in Conversation

Autor: Peter Auer

Número de Páginas: 382

Code Switching, the alternating use of two or more languages ation, has become an increasingly topical and important field of research. Now available in paperback, Code-Switching in Conversation brings together contributions from a wide variety of sociolinguistics settings in which the phenomenon is observed. It addresses not only the structure and the function, but also the ideological values of such bilingual behaviour. The contributors question many views of code switching on the empirical basis of many European and non European contexts. By bringing together linguistics, anthropological and socio-psychological research, they move towards a more realistic conception of bilingual conversation action.

A number of commentaries provide a stimulating and illuminating series of theoretical and applied encounters with Gumperz's work from different perspectives. In so doing, they shed new light on Gumperz's seminal contribution to the study of language and interaction. In his Response Essay and in a final discussion, Gumperz clarifies his views on many of the topics discussed in the volume, as well as sharing with readers his views on some other approaches to language and interaction that are closely aligned to his own. Sociolinguistics, the ethnographic approach to language, language and social interaction, intercultural communication, communicative conventions, contextualization – these are some of the key terms which Professor John J. Towards a Varieties Grammar of English

Autor: Urs Dürmüller

Número de Páginas: 246

During recent years interest in language varieties has steadily increased. Rather than simply describing homogenous language systems, linguists have begun to study language heterogeneity. This study attempts to bring the two approaches together by exploring the notion of a varieties grammar, by discussing its implications, its problems and possibilities, both from a theoretical and practical point of view. Special importance is attributed to the definition of varieties as «typolects» and of grammar as «holistic». Evaluative data are derived from a first-hand account of contemporary varieties of California English.

The Construction of Intercultural Discourse

Autor: Tom Koole , Jan D. Ten Thije

Número de Páginas: 292

This book breaks open the 'black box' of the workplace, where successful immigrants work together with their Dutch colleagues. In their intercultural team meetings the work itself consists of communication and the question is how that work is done. The teams consist of Dutch, Turkish, Moroccan, and Surinamese educational experts whose job it is to advise schools and teachers on the form and content of language teaching.Their meetings are structured according to institutionalpatterns, such as 'interactive planning' and 'reporting', and according to interculturaldiscourse structures. For instance, Dutch team members identify their immigrant colleagues as 'immigrant specialists' and are themselves identified as 'institutional specialists'. Further, the intercultural pattern 'thematizing and unthematizing racism' provides the team members with communicative methods to deal with the societal contradictions that exist between different cultural groups, in the Netherlands as well as elsewhere. These intercultural discourse structures concur with the institutional patterns so that, for instance, they affect the outcomes of planning discussions. Most studies on intercultural communication...
