Evolutionary Optimization

Autor: Ruhul Sarker , Masoud Mohammadian , Xin Yao

Número de Páginas: 416

Evolutionary computation techniques have attracted increasing att- tions in recent years for solving complex optimization problems. They are more robust than traditional methods based on formal logics or mathematical programming for many real world OR/MS problems. E- lutionary computation techniques can deal with complex optimization problems better than traditional optimization techniques. However, most papers on the application of evolutionary computation techniques to Operations Research /Management Science (OR/MS) problems have scattered around in different journals and conference proceedings. They also tend to focus on a very special and narrow topic. It is the right time that an archival book series publishes a special volume which - cludes critical reviews of the state-of-art of those evolutionary com- tation techniques which have been found particularly useful for OR/MS problems, and a collection of papers which represent the latest devel- ment in tackling various OR/MS problems by evolutionary computation techniques. This special volume of the book series on Evolutionary - timization aims at filling in this gap in the current literature. The special volume consists of...

Evolutionary Algorithms for Solving Multi-Objective Problems

Autor: Carlos A. Coello Coello , David A. Van Veldhuizen , Gary B. Lamont

Número de Páginas: 616

The solving of multi-objective problems (MOPs) has been a continuing effort by humans in many diverse areas, including computer science, engineering, economics, finance, industry, physics, chemistry, and ecology, among others. Many powerful and deterministic and stochastic techniques for solving these large dimensional optimization problems have risen out of operations research, decision science, engineering, computer science and other related disciplines. The explosion in computing power continues to arouse extraordinary interest in stochastic search algorithms that require high computational speed and very large memories. A generic stochastic approach is that of evolutionary algorithms (EA). Such algorithms have been demonstrated to be very powerful and generally applicable for solving different single objective problems. Their fundamental algorithmic structures can also be applied to solving many multi-objective problems. In this book, the various features of multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) are presented in an innovative and unique fashion, with detailed customized forms suggested for a variety of applications. Also, extensive MOEA discussion questions and...

Número de Páginas: 61

Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject Business economics - Operations Research, grade: 1,9, http: //www.uni-jena.de/ (Lehrstuhl f r ABWL, insb. Betriebswirtschaftliche Entscheidungsanalyse), course: Quantitative Methoden der Projektplanung, 12 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The use of project management is continuously growing in industrial and public organizations providing an efficient instrument for mastering the challenges caused by steadily shortening product life cycles, decreasing profit margins, and global markets. One of the main tasks in project management is the scheduling of the project, that is, the temporal arrangement of activities. Resources are required to perform activities and are available with limited capacities. Therefore, within the project management the activities are to be scheduled subject to precendence and resource constraints. In practice, different types of resources may occur. Renewable resources (e.g. machines) are available at each point in time. Nonrenewable resources (e.g. money) are depleted by use. These resources only affect the scheduling of activities if activities can be carried out in alternative modes ...

The Persistent Prison?

Autor: Maeve Winifred Mcmahon

Número de Páginas: 1232

The Prison system is widely believed to be an immutable element of contemporary society. Many criminologists and sociologists of deviance believe that decarceration movements have failed to yield progressive reform, and that feasible alternatives to the prison system do not exist. Maeve McMahon challenges these views. Reconstructing the emergence of critical perspectives on decarceration, she examines analytical and empirical problems in the research. She also points out how indicators of community programs and other penalties serving as alternatives to prison have typically been overshadowed through critical focus on their effects in 'widening the net' of control. McMahon presents a detailed analysis of decreasing imprisonment, and of the part played by alternatives in this, during the postwar period in Ontario. Drawing from extensive documentary research, and from interviews with former correctional officials, she charts the changing climates of opinions, and socio-economic factors, which facilitated decarceration. By situating her analysis in the context of theoretical and political arguments about the possibility of decarceration, McMahon provides in her work a stimulus to the ...

Introduction to Queueing Networks

Autor: J. Macgregor Smith

Número de Páginas: 579

The book examines the performance and optimization of systems where queueing and congestion are important constructs. Both finite and infinite queueing systems are examined. Many examples and case studies are utilized to indicate the breadth and depth of the queueing systems and their range of applicability. Blocking of these processes is very important and the book shows how to deal with this problem in an effective way and not only compute the performance measures of throughput, cycle times, and WIP but also to optimize the resources within these systems. The book is aimed at advanced undergraduate, graduate, and professionals and academics interested in network design, queueing performance models and their optimization. It assumes that the audience is fairly sophisticated in their mathematical understanding, although the explanations of the topics within the book are fairly detailed.
