Invasion Alienigena - Dentro Del Área 51

Autor: Patrick M Mariano

No me detendré ahora.

The unparalleled invasion / Une invasion sans précédent / La invasión sin paralelo. Première édition trilingue / First trilingual edition (English, French, Spanish)

Autor: Jack London

Número de Páginas: 82

The Unparalleled Invasion is a rare political anticipation short story written by Jack London and first published in McClure's in July 1910 and later in the book The Strength of the Strong (New York, Macmillan, 1914). The story begins in 1910s China. Under the influence of Japan, China modernizes and has its own Meiji Reforms. In 1922, China breaks away from Japan and fights a brief war that culminates in the Chinese annexation of the Japanese possessions of Korea, Formosa, and Manchuria. Over the next half century, China's population steadily grows, and eventually migration overwhelms European colonies in Asia. The United States of America and the other Western powers launch a biological warfare campaign against China, resulting in the decimation of China's population. China is then colonized by the Western powers.

Oral Cancer

Autor: Tadaaki Kirita , Ken Omura

Número de Páginas: 427

Oral cancer is frequently diagnosed late, when the disease has advanced with lesions that are large and deeply invasive and with metastasis to regional lymph nodes, leading to increased mortality. Moreover, late diagnosis and treatment often result in considerable morbidity of oral and maxillofacial structures and poor appearance and function following therapy. This book provides head and neck oncologists, oral oncologists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, medical oncologists, dentists and other members of dental teams furnishing supportive care with a systematic review of recent diagnostic and therapeutic advances in oral cancer. The various authoritative chapters are prepared by specialists who are active leaders in each basic and clinical field. All chapters address individual and collective issues that arise in managing oral cancer patients with difficult treatment problems and provide insight into the multiple valid management approaches available. The authors offer an extensive source of information about oral cancers and encourage the clinician to be flexible and innovative, giving physicians and medical personnel the background information to make the best, educated,...

The Ecology and Evolution of Invasive Populations

Autor: Ben Phillips

Número de Páginas: 289

Invasive populations are ubiquitous and invariably carry consequences. A gene for herbicide resistance spreads; a tumour grows in a loved one's body; an agricultural pest sweeps across the country; a new pathogen proliferates around the world. All of these are invasive populations — populations of genes, cells, or organisms spreading without control and having massive impact. Our collective desire to understand how invasive populations spread has inspired a rich body of basic theory developed from foundations laid in physics and statistics over a century ago. This theory has, however, often failed to explain real patterns in nature because a key consideration has been missing — evolution. The last few decades have seen a growing awareness that evolution plays out on timescales that matter to many systems. The recent emergence of evolutionary thinking in invasion biology has generated important new ideas and has enriched our understanding not only of invasions but of ecology and evolution more broadly. This accessible textbook introduces these new ideas. It provides both a survey of the field — a story about the history and development of our understanding — as well as a...

Focus on Meningitis Research

Autor: Phyllis V. Strong

Número de Páginas: 282

Meningitis is an infection of the fluid of a person's spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain. People sometimes refer to it as spinal meningitis. Meningitis is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Knowing whether meningitis is caused by a virus or bacterium is important because the severity of illness and the treatment differ. Viral meningitis is generally less severe and resolves without specific treatment, while bacterial meningitis can be quite severe and may result in brain damage, hearing loss, or learning disability. For bacterial meningitis, it is also important to know which type of bacteria is causing the meningitis because antibiotics can prevent some types from spreading and infecting other people. Before the 1990s, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) was the leading cause of bacterial meningitis, but new vaccines being given to all children as part of their routine immunizations have reduced the occurrence of invasive disease due to H. influenzae. Today, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Neisseria meningitides are the leading causes of bacterial meningitis.

Suleiman's book considers national identity in relation to language, the way in which language can be manipulated to signal political, cultural or historical difference. As a language with a long-recorded heritage and one spoken by the majority of those in the Middle East in various dialects, Arabic is a particularly appropriate vehicle for such an investigation. It is also a penetrating device for exploring the conflicts of the Middle East.'This is a well-crafted, well organized, and eloquent book. 'Karin Ryding, Georgetown University

Introduction to World War II

Autor: Gilad James, Phd

Número de Páginas: 74

World War II began on September 1, 1939, with Germany invading Poland. This marked the beginning of a global conflict that lasted six long years, and involved the majority of the world's nations. The war ended on September 2, 1945, when Japan formally surrendered after atomic bombs were dropped on their cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, the war had already taken a huge toll on the world, with more than 60 million people having lost their lives, making it the deadliest conflict in human history. The root causes of World War II can be traced back to the Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I. The treaty had placed severe sanctions on Germany, such as huge war reparations and loss of territory, which led to an economic depression in the country. In addition, the rise of dictatorial regimes in countries such as Japan and Italy, as well as the militarization and aggression of Nazi Germany, created tensions that eventually erupted into war. The war had far-reaching consequences on the world, including the establishment of the United Nations and the emergence of the United States and the Soviet Union as superpowers.

Colorectal Cancer

Autor: Kees Welvaart , L.h. Blumgart , J. Kreuning

Número de Páginas: 278

This book is based on the proceedings of a successful Boerhaave International Symposium on colorectal cancer held at the University of Leiden, 6-9 June, 1979. I would like to offer grateful thanks to the eminent clinicians and scientists who contributed both to the Symposium and to this book. Colorectal cancer is a very common form of malignancy, particularly in the Western world, and there have been a number of recent developments in the management of this condition. This book has attempted to collate informa tion on the current methods of investigation and treatment and I believe that it will prove valuable to all those interested in oncology. The contents range widely, covering the entire field from epidemiology through screening methods, diagnostic approaches and therapy of both primary and secondary disease. Perhaps the most outstanding new areas discussed and reflected in the proceedings are the possible range and scope of screening techniques, the new possibilities both in treatment and in endoscopic surgery now available as a result of developments in fibre-optic endoscopy, and new approaches and important parameters in staging of the disease.

Planning for War at Sea

Autor: Evan Wilson , Paul M. Kennedy

Número de Páginas: 225

How have navies contemplated possible enemies? How did they learn, or fail to learn, once operations began? How does this analysis inform today’s planning for future conflict? These questions guide the noted historians and naval strategists who contributed to Planning for War at Sea. A central theme is the regular failure of navies’ best-laid plans. Covering four centuries of naval warfare, the chapters illustrate the challenges all navies faced when considering possible enemies. Even during the Age of Sail, ships were among the most expensive and long-term national endeavors. Navies therefore planned well in advance for future wars, usually without knowing their adversaries or how they would fight them at sea. Building a capable navy requires sustained investment in naval infrastructure long before the fighting starts. In the final chapters naval strategists expand on this historical analysis to address how effectively or ineffectively today’s three leading navies—Russia, China, and the United States—have configured themselves during the post–Cold War era in preparing for future great power conflict. This collection is an important work for strategists, scholars, and...

Cox-2

Autor: Joseph R. Bertino , Andrew J. Dannenberg , Raymond N. Dubois

Número de Páginas: 300

Numerous investigators have found increased levels of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in both premalignant and malignant tissues. Moreover, animals engineered to be COX-2 deficient or treated with a selective COX-2 inhibitor showed reduced tumor formation and growth. The present book reviews these findings suggesting that COX-2 is a valid molecular target for the prevention and treatment of cancer. The first chapters are devoted to the epidemiology of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and cancer, the pharmacology of COX-2 inhibitors and the regulation of COX-2 expression in human cancers. Besides, the book contains a series of chapters examining the link between COX-2 and cancer in specific organs (e.g. skin, breast, cervix, digestive tract, lung, etc.). Furthermore, several clinical trials assessing the potential of COX-2 inhibitors for preventing and treating cancer are described. The final chapter provides an up-to-date consideration of COX-independent targets of NSAIDs and related compounds in cancer prevention and treatment. This state-of-the-art publication is recommended reading not only for medical and radiation oncologists, but also for pharmacologists,...

MR Imaging of Laryngeal Cancer

Autor: J.a Castelijns , G.b. Snow , Jaap Valk

Número de Páginas: 201

MRI is assuming a dominant role in imaging of the larynx. Its superior soft tissue contrast resolution makes it ideal for differentiating invasion of tumors of the larynx from normal or more sharply circumscribed configuration of most of the benign lesions. Over ten years ago CT made a major impact on laryngeal examination because it was the first time that Radiologists were beginning to look at submucosal disease. All of the previous examinations duplicated the infor mation that was available to the clinician via direct and in-direct laryngo scopy. With the advent of rigid and flexible endoscopes, clinical examination became sufficiently precise that there was little need to perform studies such as laryngography which merely showed surface anatomy. The status of deep structures by these techniques was implied based on function. Fortunately laryngography is now behind us together with all of the gagging and contrast reactions which we would all like to forget. CT is still an excellent method of examining the larynx but it is unfortunately limited to the axial plane. With presently available CT techniques motion deteriorates any reformatting in sagittal or coronal projections. The...
