Practices of Projection

Autor: Gabriel Menotti , Virginia Crisp

Número de Páginas: 305

To many, the technological aspects of projection often go unnoticed, only brought to attention during moments of crisis or malfunction. For example, when a movie theater projector falters, the audience suddenly looks toward the back of the theater to see a sign of mechanical failure. The history of cinema similarly shows that the attention to projection has been most focused when the whole medium is hanging in suspension. During Hollywood's economic consolidation in the '30s, projection defined the ways that sync-sound technologies could be deployed within the medium. Most recently, the digitization of cinema repeated this process as technology was reworked to facilitate mobility. These examples show how projection continually speaks to the rearrangement of media technology. Projection therefore needs to be examined as a pivotal element in the future of visual media's technological transition. In Practices of Projection: Histories and Technologies, volume editors Gabriel Menotti and Virginia Crisp address the cultural and technological significance of projection. Throughout the volume, chapters reiterate that projection cannot, and must not, be reduced to its cinematic functions...

Absence and Difficult Knowledge in Contemporary Art Museums

Autor: Margaret Tali

Número de Páginas: 243

This book analyzes practices of collecting in European art museums from 1989 to the present, arguing that museums actualize absence both consciously and unconsciously, while misrepresentation is an outcome of the absent perspectives and voices of minority community members which are rarely considered in relation to contemporary art. Difficult knowledge is proposed as a way of dealing with absence productively. Drawing on social art history, museology, postcolonial theory, and memory studies, Margaret Tali analyzes the collections of four modern and contemporary art museums across Europe: the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, the Kiasma Museum in Helsinki, and the Kumu Museum in Tallinn.

Molecular, Cellular, and Clinical Aspects of Angiogenesis

Autor: Michael E. Maragoudakis

Número de Páginas: 290

There has been an explosion of research activity related to angiogenesis in recent years, and hundreds of laboratories worldwide are actively involved in many aspects of angiogenesiS. The literature on angiogenesis increases exponentially every year, and more than 16,000 peer-reviewed articles have been published the past 25 years, which are scattered in basic science and clinical journals. The complexity of the cascade of events leading to new vessel formation from preexisting ones has challenged scientists in cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, molecular biology, developmental biology, and other fields. With their multidisciplinary approach and the powerful new techniques that have been developed, the progress in understanding angiogenesis has been impressive indeed. Only 12 years ago the mention of an angiogenic factor caused skepticism. Today we have the complete amino-acid fiequence and their genes cloned for at least 9 angiogenic factors. Many laboratories are studying their role in angiogenesis, and several biotechnology firms have a keen interest in commercial developments relative to these molecules. The role of extracellular matrix components in...

Staying Open: Charles Olson’s Sources and Influences

Autor: Joshua Hoeynck

Número de Páginas: 323

“Staying Open, Charles Olson’s Sources and Influences” investigates the inter-disciplinary influences on the work of the mid-Century American poet, Charles Olson. This edited collection of essays covers Olson’s diverse non-literary interests, including his engagement with the music of John Cage and Pierre Boulez, his interests in abstract expressionism, and his readings of philosopher Alfred North Whitehead. The essays also examine Olson’s pedagogy, which he developed in the experimental environment at Black Mountain College, as well as his six-month archeological journey through the Yucatan Peninsula in 1950 to explore the culture of the Maya. This book will, therefore, be a strong research aid to scholars working in diverse fields – music, archeology, pedagogy, philosophy, art, and psychology – as it outlines methods for close inter-disciplinary work that can uncover the mechanics of Olson’s creative, literary processes. Building on the straightforward scholarship of George Butterick, whose Guide to the Maximus Poems remains indispensable for readers of Olson’s work, the essays in this volume will also guide readers through the thick allusions within The...

Intertextual Exoticism

Autor: Richard Sperber

Número de Páginas: 448

Intertextual Exoticism reads a body of non-canonical German exoticist literature published after imperial Germany's loss of colonial Oceania in 1914, applying theories of "intertextuality" (Kristeva) and recent scholarship on literary exoticism to explore Germany's postwar crises of psychology, masculinity, and national identity mapped onto Oceanic spaces. Many readers are familiar with late Victorian texts expressing imperial Britain's anxieties. Richard Sperber expands the scope of these texts in the context of a post-imperial Europe, examining how German exoticist literature, published after German colonial loss in Oceania in 1914, intensifies the gothic themes and subjectivities of these Victorian texts. The first part of this volume examines eight adventure narratives of Oceania, demonstrating how they do not necessarily present or represent a single, unified German colonial project. They take place on islands owned by Australia and Britain, and the unprepared German protagonists-amateur naturalists and bungling traders-are compared unfavourably to resolute Anglophone adventurers. The second part then pairs five well-known exoticist texts, including Conrad's Heart of...

Radiation Oncology of Gynecological Cancers

Autor: Helmut W. Vahrson

Número de Páginas: 758

The incidence, diagnosis, and treatment of gynecologic cancer have undergone major changes during the past 20 years. In addition to significant changes in the incidence of the diseases, there has been extensive application of new technologies in the field. - While the incidence of invasive cancers of the cervix has diminished sharply, there has been a marked increase in the number of patients presenting with in situ carcinomas of the cervix. This has resulted primarily from better education but also from the regular use of Papanicolaou screening for early diagnosis. This trend has been associated with a major shift from late stage disease to early stage disease, which has led to more effective utilization of surgical techniques in primary management, with less emphasis on radiation therapy techniques. Almost invariably, in situ cancers of the cervix can be cured by surgical management, and high cure rates can be achieved by surgical techniques in early invasive cancers of the cervix. Therefore, more patients are receiving definitive surgical management rather than definitive radiation therapy management. - Because of its tendency to present at an early stage, cancer of the...

Conjugates of Steroid Hormones

Autor: Harry E. Hadd , Robert T. Blickenstaff

Número de Páginas: 385

Conjugates of Steroid Hormones focuses on the synthesis, isolation, assay, and metabolism of steroid conjugates. The book first offers information on the isolation of steroid conjugates and sulfates of steroid hormones. Topics include separation of steroid conjugates by adsorption, isolation from natural sources, group separation of sulfates and glucuronides, enzymic synthesis, and separation of steroid conjugates by solvent extraction. The manuscript then tackles glucuronides and glycosides of steroid hormones, as well as chemical synthesis and biosynthesis of diconjugates. The text ponders on phosphates of steroid hormones and metabolism of steroid conjugates. Discussions focus on the occurrence of steroid phosphates in biological fluids; metabolism of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate to estrogens; formation of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate; and estrogen conjugates. The publication is highly recommended for organic chemists and biochemists.

Oxygen Transport to Tissue XV

Autor: Peter Vaupel , Rolf Zander , Duane F. Bruley

Número de Páginas: 920

Seventeen years after the 2nd International Symposium on Oxygen Transport to Tissue, which was held in Mainz in March 1975, the local Organizing Committee and the Board of ISOTT were pleased to host the ISOTT Conference in Mainz on the Rhine again. The venue of the 20th meeting was the prestigious, fully restored Schloss Waldthausen (Waldthausen Castle) which provided a special setting for ISOTT 1992. The beautiful front view of the castle became part of the ISOTT 1992 logo. The 20th ISOTT Meeting was held in Mainz from August 26th through August 30th, 1992. The Conference attracted 200 active participants from 16 countries. The theme of this meeting emphasized oxygen transport to tumors but as in earlier meetings, essentially all aspects of oxygen transport within the body were covered as demonstrated by the manuscripts comprising this volume of the series "Oxygen Transport to Tissue". All manuscripts were reviewed. Extensive revisions were made in about 25% and modest revision in about another 30%. Because we had to compromise between the aim of rapid publication on the one hand and the need for thorough review on the other, minor errors in format and some typographical errors...

„Charis“ oder Riskante Reziprozität

Autor: Sabine Mainberger

Número de Páginas: 378

Was führt und hält Menschen zusammen? Was konstituiert Gesellschaft? Was erzeugt soziale Kohäsion?
