Autor: Avivah Wittenberg-cox

The Life of Sherman Coolidge, Arapaho Activist

Autor: Tadeusz Lewandowski

Número de Páginas: 357

Sherman Coolidge’s (1860–1932) panoramic life as survivor of the Indian Wars, witness to the maladministration of the reservation system, mediator between Native and white worlds, and ultimate defender of Native rights and heritage made him the embodiment of his era in American Indian history. Born to a band of Northern Arapaho in present-day Wyoming, Des-che-wa-wah (Runs On Top) endured a series of harrowing tragedies against the brutal backdrop of the nineteenth-century Indian Wars. As a boy he experienced the merciless killings of his family in vicious raids and attacks, surviving only to be given up by his starving mother to U.S. officers stationed at a western military base. Des-che-wa-wah was eventually adopted by a sympathetic infantry lieutenant who changed his name and set his life on a radically different course. Over the next sixty years Coolidge inhabited western plains and eastern cities, rode in military campaigns against the Lakota, entered the Episcopal priesthood, labored as missionary to his tribe on the Wind River Reservation, fomented dangerous conspiracies, married a wealthy New York heiress, met with presidents and congressmen, and became one of the...

Letters to Laura

Autor: Cal Shrock

Número de Páginas: 207

Letters to Laura started as a single letter telling how God saved a life, but the letters continued, becoming a series of stories of survival that amazed even the author. Cal has survived a garage door blowing off the wall, near electrocution, wild rides as a hitchhiker, escape from being run down in traffic, an encounter with a wild badger, and more-more than he had realized until writing these letters to Laura. Cal shares his candid conversations with a God who gets involved. He gets mad at God, apologizes, asks favors, and confides, expecting a response-yet finding the unexpected. Each letter is one or more stories of deliverance, humiliation, success, wonder, or sobering reality. Cal is honest as he reconstructs what really happened, yet is completely amazed at how carefully God has guided and guarded his life, all his life. "I should not be here. I just wanted to encourage Laura, but these letters have encouraged me. I had not realized how many times my life has been saved," is his wondering discovery.

"Digging All Night and Fighting All Day"

Autor: Paul Brueske

Número de Páginas: 337

The bloody two-week siege of Spanish Fort, Alabama (March 26–April 8, 1865) was one of the final battles of the Civil War. Despite its importance and fascinating history, surprisingly little has been written about it. Many considered the fort as the key to holding the important seaport of Mobile, which surrendered to Maj. Gen. Edward R. S. Canby on April 12, 1865. Paul Brueske’s “Digging All Night and Fighting All Day”: The Civil War Siege of Spanish Fort and the Mobile Campaign, 1865 is the first full-length study of this subject. General U. S. Grant had long set his eyes on capturing Mobile. Its fall would eliminate the vital logistical center and put one of the final nails in the coffin of the Confederacy. On January 18, 1865, Grant ordered General Canby to move against Mobile, Montgomery, and Selma and destroy anything useful to the enemy’s war effort. The reduction of Spanish Fort, along with Fort Blakeley—the primary obstacles to taking Mobile—was a prerequisite to capturing the city. After the devastating Tennessee battles of Franklin and Nashville in late 1864, many Federals believed Mobile’s garrison—which included a few battered brigades and most of the ...
