A Day in the Life of Abed Salama by Nathan Thrall tells the story of Abed Salama, a Palestinian man from Anata, and his experiences amid the Israeli occupation and Palestinian resistance. Abed's early life is marked by a secret romance with Ghazl, his involvement with the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP), and his subsequent arrest and imprisonment by Israeli forces. Post-incarceration, Abed faces restrictions on his movement and employment, leading him to work for an Israeli contractor and contemplate a second marriage for practical reasons...

The Only Language They Understand

Autor: Nathan Thrall

Número de Páginas: 337

In a myth-busting analysis of the world's most intractable conflict, a star of Middle East reporting, "one of the most important writers" in the field (The New York Times), argues that only one weapon has yielded progress: force. Scattered over the territory between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea lie the remnants of failed peace proposals, international summits, secret negotiations, UN resolutions, and state-building efforts. The conventional story is that these well-meaning attempts at peacemaking were repeatedly, perhaps terminally, thwarted by violence. Through a rich interweaving of reportage, historical narrative, and powerful analysis, Nathan Thrall presents a startling counter-history. He shows that force—including but not limited to violence—has impelled each side to make its largest concessions, from Palestinian acceptance of a two-state solution to Israeli territorial withdrawals. This simple fact has been neglected by the world powers, which have expended countless resources on initiatives meant to diminish friction between the parties. By quashing any hint of confrontation, promising an imminent negotiated solution, facilitating security cooperation,...

Poems of James Russell Lowell, With Biographical Sketch by Nathan Haskell Dole.

Autor: James Russell Lowell

Número de Páginas: 516

1892. With biographical sketch by Nathan Haskell Dole. Lowell is one of the group of authors sometimes called the Fireside Poets, or the Schoolroom Poets, a group which also included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Because of their conservative approach to verse and the often blatant morality in their poetry, the very qualities that made them popular in their day, have put them out of favor for much of the twentieth century. However, given that Lowell was an ardent abolitionist he may not have been considered conservative in his day. See other titles by this author available from Kessinger Publishing.
