Bridge: A Thinker's Game

Autor: Joe Blatnick

Número de Páginas: 287

Even the best players in the world went through the same learning stages as we mortals. We all started by feeling oeverwhelmed and frustrated, but we soldiered on. After all, you can't become competent in any endeavour without total effort, immersion, if you will. And these efforts were worthwhile because we realized the eventual reward. - a wider range of friends and mental exercise - was that 'pot of gold' at the end of the rainbow. However, those beginning efforts were essentially rote learning of cliches. It was only as we gained playing experience that we began to realize that nothing replaced thinking and being ' ever vigilant'. As you read on, you will begin to appreciate how thinking makes the learning more complete and with it a more complete bridge player. Bridge really is a thinker's game.

L O L

Autor: James Marsh Sternberg Md , Danny Kleinman

Número de Páginas: 198

Just what is LOL? Yes, a common abbreviation for Laughing Out Loud, and often used to refer to a Little Old Lady, but in bridge it means a Loser-On-Loser play. At times a declarer can improve his/her situation by playing a losing card from one hand on a loser in a different suit from the hand opposite. This occurs when a player has a loser in two suits but can arrange to lose them both on one trick, thereby reducing the number of losers from two to one. Often this looks like a Ruff-and-Sluff play, but instead of ruffing, declarer or dummy discards a loser in each hand. When and why would one do this? This technique has many uses. One example is to keep the ‘Danger’ hand off lead. Often in the end game it serves as the exit in assisting the process of elimination and placing the lead in the hand of the desired opponent for an endplay. The advantage of this procedure is that declarer divests himself of two losers while simultaneously placing the lead in the desired quarter.

Love Hurts

Autor: Fraser Marr , Neil Jeffries

Número de Páginas: 188

Most relationships between a fan and a favourite football team go way beyond the casual. Almost always that relationship is a torrid, steamy and passionate love affair. A love affair that rarely lives up to expectations. A love affair that seldom satisfies and, most of the time, just plain hurts. So it is for supporters of Leeds United, a club with a big reputation secured in the late 1960s and early '70s, but tarnished in the '80s and rebuilt only partially in the '90s. Come the start of the 1996-97 season, Leeds were a Premiership club on paper, but on the pitch looked far from it. The supporters groaned and the new board acted swiftly, manager Howard Wilkinson being replaced by the once disgraced George Graham. The football world watched as the former Arsenal supreme sought to rebuild both Leeds and his own reputation. All the club had was time, hope and the love of its fans . . . Love Hurts tells the story of some of those fans. It is a diary of one extraordinary season, told and photographed in a uniquely personal way by two men for whom following Leeds is a labour of love requiring hours of motorway travel to matches offering variable amounts of torment and despair, of...

The Flaws in Standard American Bridge

Autor: Ken Casey

Número de Páginas: 141

This book is designed to highlight the flaws in Standard American bidding, i.e. the SAYC system. The book discusses the major failures of SAYC, namely the failure of the ACBL to adopt the Bergen point-count system, the failure to simplify reverses, the failure to find a 20-21p bid for all hands, and the failure to adopt the Casey-Jacoby Transfer convention and the Casey Rebid convention. In addition, the book points out numerous minor failures such as the failure to find a means of bidding a direct game, the failure of SAYC to require takeout doubles to have a four-card major, and the failure to adopt Minorwood, a six-keycard kickback convention. The book also points out the ACBL’s failure to clarify certain issues, such as the failure to clarify O’s reply to R’s two-level response, the failure to clarify cuebids, and the failure to clarify Stopper-Ask bids. The book provides a solution for all these problems in a new system called Precision Diamond.

Crops

Autor: Alex Cropley

Número de Páginas: 292

A nippy sweetie, he was always moaning, but that is often the sign of a great player - a real determination to succeed and a refusal to settle for second best. PAT STANTONI used to flinch when Studs wound up for a challenge and he feared no one as he sometimes threw his whole body into a tackle. That meant we also spent too much time together in the treatment room. ANDY GRAY Alex Cropley had just left school when he was picked up as one of Scotland's latest football talents. Signed to Hibernian aged just 16, Cropley soon made his name as a player on the team's legendary Turnbull's Tornadoes side. Over the 1970s, he played for Hibernian, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Toronto Blizzard and Portsmouth, before a number of injuries forced him off the pitch. From a football-mad kid playing on the streets of Edinburgh to a member of the Scottish national team, his career epitomises both the aspirations and the bitter disappointments surrounding the game on the pitch. Cropley's tale of his time on (and off) the pitch isn't just the tale of one man's odyssey, however, but rather offers a glimpse into the footballing landscape of the time, with an engaging and often wry depiction...

Even though he spoke with a broad Scottish accent, Joe was in Alf Ramsey's initial squad for the 1966 World Cup. With unprecedented access to the Baker family archives, including contributions from Gerry Baker and the late Joe's son Colin, The Fabulous Baker Boys is a unique tale of Scotland's most celebrated sporting siblings and contains exclusive interviews with the likes of Denis Law, Lawrie Reilly, John Robertson, Alex Young, Pat Stanton, Bob Wilson and George Eastham.

Playing to Trick One

Autor: James Marsh Sternberg Md

Número de Páginas: 224

Bridge is a game of mistakes. The best players make fewer mistakes. It’s not a matter of being brilliant The real expert players never make basic mistakes, they keep the ball in the court, in the fairway. Sure there is an occasional hand where they make a brilliant play but that’s not what distinguishes the true expert from the good player. One often hears an expert say I’ve seen this hand before”. What does he mean? No,he hasn’t seen the hand record;he recognizes the hand type. After all, there are only a finite number of hand types in bridge. For example, second suit hands,cross-ruffs,ruffing in dummy,a simple finesse,an elimination,a dummy reversal and a couple of others. You can’t reinvent bridge every time a hand comes down. If you recognize the type, then you have some idea or plan of how to go about trying to make your contract. But one of the biggest mistakes non-expert players make is playing to trick one, then looking around and deciding what to do next. And in many cases,it’s already too late. The key to the hand was trick one. But sorry,no mulligans in bridge. So this book will present a series of hands, all as quizzes but of course you have a big clue from...
