Looking for the Harp Quartet

Autor: Markand Thakar

Número de Páginas: 229

This book is a philosophical tour through the experience of beauty: what it is, and how the composer, performer, and listener all contribute. It explores -- with insight, patience, and humor -- profound issues at the essence of our experience. A student performance of Beethoven's String Quartet No. 10 in E-Flat Major, known as the "Harp," serves as a point of departure and a recurring theme. For the layperson the core of the book is five dialogues between Icarus, an inquiring student intensely concerned with fulfilling his highest potential as a musician, and Daedalus, a curmudgeonly, iconoclastic teacher who guides Icarus's search. Three technical articles, geared to the music professional and academic, treat the issues in greater depth. Supplementary online audio files and musical examples. Markand Thakar is Music Director of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and a member of the graduate conducting faculty at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University.

The Farmer's Wife Slow Cooker Cookbook

Autor: Lela Nargi

Número de Páginas: 209

The early twentieth-century world of The Farmer’s Wife may be vastly different than our own hectic, high-tech times, but some things never change—like a taste for the kind of food that’s cooked all day, the long-simmered stews and chilis, pot roasts and soups and puddings that savor of comfort and care. With a modicum of preparation in the morning or even the night before, anyone can come home to the kind of meals that yesterday’s farmer’s wife prepared; the slow-cooked beans and barbeque, casseroles, and hot dishes that could serve a few friends, a big hungry family, or a whole community. For party dishes that let a host focus on guests; for meals that won’t heat up the summer kitchen; for hearty, delicious fare to satisfy gatherings big and small with leftovers to store for later meals, these slow-cooker recipes are the perfect time-wise, money-saving way to dish up a great helping of farmland history.

The Instrumental Music of Schmeltzer, Biber, Muffat and their Contemporaries

Autor: Professor Charles E Brewer

Número de Páginas: 448

Based on primary sources, many of which have never been published or examined in detail, this book examines the music of the late seventeenth-century composers, Biber, Schmeltzer and Muffat, and the compositions preserved in the extensive Moravian archives in Kromeriz. These works have never before been fully examined in the cultural and conceptual contexts of their time. Charles E. Brewer sets these composers and their music within a framework that first examines the basic Baroque concepts of instrumental style, and then provides a context for the specific works. The dances of Schmeltzer, for example, functioned both as incidental music in Viennese operas and as music for elaborate court pantomimes and balls. These same cultural practices also account for some of Biber's most programmatic music, which accompanied similar entertainments in Kromeriz and Salzburg. The many sonatas by these composers have also been misunderstood by not being placed in a context where it was normal to be entertained in church and edified in court. Many of the works discussed here remain unpublished but have, in recent years, been recorded. This book enhances our understanding and appreciation of these ...
