Language Policy in Taiwan in the 21st Century

Autor: Chen-cheng Chun , Der-hwa Victoria Rau

Número de Páginas: 226

This book provides insiders' views of how Taiwan's monolingual language policy has evolved into multilingual language policies since its peaceful transition to a democratic society in the late 20th century. From three major perspectives, it examines the conflicts and compromises of monolingual and multilingual ideologies, challenges and approaches in language management, and actual language practice in families and communities in the transformation process in the last three decades. The book intends to theorize Taiwan's multilingual experience and introduce it to the international scholarly community, who are more familiar with the monolingual development on the other side of the Taiwan Strait and less aware of the multilingual development in Taiwan. It is an eye-opening book for language planning and policy students, language educators, public policymakers, and all those with a stake in multilingualism.

Secondary School Dual Language Immersion

Autor: Ko-yin Sung

Número de Páginas: 168

This book responds to the expansion of dual language immersion (DLI) programs into secondary contexts, examining the effectiveness of these programs and highlighting areas for improvement in the curriculum. Focusing on Mandarin Chinese DLI in Utah secondary schools, it presents the views of teachers, parents and students on the newly implemented program, explores patterns of classroom interactions, and assesses learners’ oral narrative development as well as their learning strategy use in building reading, writing and listening skills. In this way, it pinpoints possible weaknesses in the curriculum and current teaching practices and provides pedagogical implications and suggestions for in-service teachers and administrators, advocating for the inclusion of heritage language maintenance as a program goal. Autor: Howard Hao-jan Chen , Keiko Mochizuki , Hongyin Tao

Número de Páginas: 330

Interfaces and Features in Second Language Acquisition

Autor: Jia Wang

Número de Páginas: 308

This book presents comprehensive and rigorous research on the acquisition of Chinese negation by L1-English and L1-Korean learners within the theoretical framework of the Interface Hypothesis and the Feature Reassembly Hypothesis. The results from grammaticality judgment data (N=182) and learner corpus data (overall scale: 15.19 million characters) reveal multiple factors contributing to the variability in L2 acquisition at the interfaces involved with Chinese negative structures, including L1 influence, the quantity (input frequency) and the quality of the target input (input consistency and regularity), as well as L2 proficiency. These factors also underlie the detectability and reassembly of the [±realis] features encoded with bu and mei, the two primary negation markers in Mandarin Chinese, in different licensing contexts. Task modality (written vs. aural) seems to play a role in L2 learners’ access to explicit and implicit knowledge about Chinese negation, but the effect of task modality is constrained by other factors such as structural/feature complexity, L2 proficiency, and L1-L2 similarity. The approach of employing both elicited experimental data and authentic learner ...

Assessing Learners’ Competence in L2 Chinese 二语汉语能力测试

Autor: Yang Lu

Número de Páginas: 242

Assessing Learners’ Competence in L2 Chinese is the first book intended to answer the question on whether existing standardised and classroom-based assessments can reflect learners’ competence in L2 Chinese. The Chinese language has enjoyed increasing global popularity amongst second/foreign language learners and has become one of the major modern languages for school and university curricula. However, to many teachers and researchers, it has been difficult to answer with confidence whether the existing standardised and classroom tests can reflect learners’ competence in L2 Chinese. This book defines and redefines the constructs for assessing L2 Chinese competence that have been overlooked or misplaced because of the unique features of the Chinese language. The book provides theoretical backgrounds and practical methodologies for assessing competence in L2 Chinese trainees and experienced teachers of Chinese as a second language. It will provide invaluable guidelines and ready-made workshop materials for postgraduate teacher training programmes. Researchers and academics will find innovative frameworks on the subject for further studies and debates.

Chinese as a Second and Foreign Language Education

Autor: Qiao Yu Cai

Número de Páginas: 136

This book presents key issues in the teaching of Chinese as a second or foreign language (TCSL or TCFL). It investigates how multimedia can help to assist TCSL/TCFL and explores practical effects of multimedia-assisted teaching at secondary schools in the Philippines. It addresses the psychology of TCSL/TCFL and discusses various recurring foreign graduate students concerns when learning academic Chinese in graduate institutes in Taiwan. It examines issues of educational assessment and testing, analyzing the validity of a self-made placement test for an immigrant Chinese program, as well as the psychological characteristics of adult learners and their implications for immigrant Chinese curriculum design. As foreign learners of Chinese grow exponentially, this cutting edge read conceptualizes the educational philosophy of TCSL/TCFL as a distinctive discipline.

Tests that Second Language Teachers Make and Use

Autor: Greta Gorsuch

Número de Páginas: 556

Classroom tests are an everyday feature of second and foreign language classrooms worldwide. Teachers spend a lot of time and energy making and using tests, and learners spend of lot of time and energy taking them. Nonetheless, such assessments are under-studied, as they are considered routine. This volume illuminates this little-researched area. Featuring fifteen classroom language tests made and used by Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish teachers, the book includes parallel teacher commentary and testing content chapters that transparently probe the teachers’ processes of making and using their tests. Rather than view teachers’ tests as poor shadows of what professional test writers do, this work identifies the reasoning behind teachers’ tests. In addition, focused testing content chapters take examples directly from the actual tests and the accompanying teacher commentary. This book is an accessible, applied resource for second and foreign language teachers, language program administrators working with teachers, students in teacher preparation and enrichment programs, and scholars in language teaching, learning, and testing.

Explorations into Chinese as a Second Language

Autor: Istvan Kecskes

Número de Páginas: 233

This volume explores how linguistic research can support the teaching and learning of Chinese as a second language. It responds to a rapidly growing interest in the Chinese language all over the world, and answers the need for a strong research background for the discipline. Without that, Chinese language learning remains only a unique experience and/or a useful education challenge. The first section explores crucial issues about the structure and use of Chinese as a Second Language such as word-order, noun-noun compounds, meaning-making in writing, pronunciation and stress and tone. The second section explores the learning of Chinese by seeking answer to questions about difficulties, expectations, beliefs, use of corpus and learning how to express necessity. The authors coming from eight different countries demonstrate how existing knowledge has been generated, bring together different lines of research, point out tendencies in the field, demonstrate and explain what tools and methods researchers can use to address major issues in the field, and give direction to what future research should focus on.

Chinese for Specific and Professional Purposes

Autor: Hongyin Tao , Howard Hao-jan Chen

Número de Páginas: 414

This book, likely the first of its kind in the English language, explores Chinese for specific and professional purposes (CSP) in terms of theorizing and developing practical applications for language teaching and learning. While research in language for specific purposes is thriving for languages such as English, there has been comparatively little such research conducted for Chinese. This volume attempts to fill the gap by bringing together practitioners from a broad international scholarly community, who share common interests yet diverse orientations. Seventeen papers are included, and address four broad thematic categories: (1) academic Chinese, (2) business Chinese, (3) Chinese for medicine and health care, and (4) Chinese for other broadly defined services and industries (diplomacy, tourism, wine-tasting, etc.). Representing the state of the art in CSP research, the book offers an indispensable guide for anyone interested in theoretical and practical issues in this area of applied Chinese language studies.

Using Theories for Second Language Teaching and Learning

Autor: Dale T. Griffee , Greta Gorsuch

Número de Páginas: 287

This book helps second language teachers use theories in their practice, exploring in concrete and practical ways the intersections between teachers, learners, and institutions, and theories of teaching, theories of learning, and theories of language. These intersections provide language teachers with critical insights on how to deal with professional complexities and practical guidance on how to develop appropriate pedagogical practice. By focusing on theories of teaching, the authors give readers the tools to create a clear image of the kind of teacher they wish to be. By exploring theories of learning, they promote the formation of teachers' personal theories which allow them to identify their own areas of special interest in learner achievement and enrichment. By examining theories of language, the book shows how administrators and teachers can use theories to identify course goals and plan priorities for class time. Using Theories for Second Language Teaching and Learning treats theory as a concept in its own right and promotes knowing theory as a means of teacher discovery, reflection, and learning through case studies, which are descriptions and analyses of teachers...

La lingua cinese in Italia. Studi su didattica e acquisizione

Autor: Sergio Conti , Chiara Romagnoli
