Most accounts of the Spanish transition to democracy have been celebratory exercise rather than a project of reform. This book strives to present memory as a performative exercise of democratic agents with different and necessarily fragmented recollections.
¿Por qué tantos silencios? Silencios principalmente de mi tierra, Barcelona, en medios oficiales, oficiosos y en algún “privado”, por ser catalán, no nacionalista, ser liberal conservador, ”llamado de derechas”, católico y cristiano; sentirme orgulloso de ser catalán y un honor ser español. Esto me ha merecido ¡Silencio! No así en mis primeros años de profesional y sí años más tarde. Luego vinieron años de éxito, discos de oro, actuaciones en casi todo el mundo y ¡Silencio! Como dúo llegaron los premios, distinciones y meses y meses llenando los teatros en Miami, Los Ángeles, Sudamérica, en gran parte del mundo y ¡Silencio! ¿Por qué ciertos medios de comunicación, algunos con valores afines, también nos silenciaron? ¿Por qué en América todo y aquí en nuestro país nada o casi nada? Estos silencios me llevaron a escribir gran parte de este libro para que nuestra dilatada carrera no quedará en Silencio.
"This book is the first to explore the interaction of three media in contemporary Spain. Focusing on some of the best known and most important books, feature films, and television series in the country (including novelist Antonio Munoz Molina, director Pedro Almodovar, and the Spanish version of telenovela Ugly Betty), it addresses three pairs of linked issues central to Hispanic studies and beyond: history and memory, authority and society, and genre and transitivity. Much of the material is very recent and thus as yet unstudied. The book also focuses on the representation of gender, sexuality, and transnationalism in these texts. Drawing on approaches from both the humanities and social sciences it combines close readings of key texts with the analysis of production processes, media institutions, audiences, and reception."
