Vril: The Power of the Coming Race

Autor: Edward Bulwer Lytton

Número de Páginas: 137

I have spoken so much of the Vril Staff that my reader may expect me to describe it. This I cannot do accurately, for I was never allowed to handle it for fear of some terrible accident occasioned by my ignorance of its use; and I have no doubt that it requires much skill and practice in the exercise of its various powers. It is hollow, and has in the handle several stops, keys, or springs by which its force can be altered, modified, or directed-so that by one process it destroys, by another it heals-by one it can rend the rock, by another disperse the vapour-by one it affects bodies, by another it can exercise a certain influence over minds. It is usually carried in the convenient size of a walking-staff, but it has slides by which it can be lengthened or shortened at will. When used for special purposes, the upper part rests in the hollow of the palm with the fore and middle fingers protruded.

This early science fiction novel offers a fascinating vision of a shadowy underworld populated by strange and beautiful creatures who closely resemble the angels described in Christian lore. Vril, the Power of the Coming Race

Autor: Edward Bulwer Lytton Lytton, Baron , Edward George Earle Bulwer-lytton

Número de Páginas: 204

Bulwer-Lytton is legend nowadays for the qualities of his prose: but we find his prose attractive, in its languid way; and certainly the man was a profound thinker. Vril is a mysterious energy used by Lytton's subterranean race -- refugees from the deluge that submerged Atlantis -- to power their advanced civilization. Generations of occultists have mistaken this bit of business for something other than fiction; and still more generations of science fiction writers have recycled the novel's plot. Vril is a book of strong interest to anyone doing a scholarly study of the evolution of SF; it's also a novel well worth reading in its own right. (Jacketless library hardcover.)

From Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth to Rudy Rucker's The Hollow Earth, subterranean worlds have been a source of both fascination and fear for the literary imagination, and The Coming Race is no exception. An evolutionary fantasy first published in 1871, the story draws upon ideas of Darwinism to describe a near-future world characterized by female dominance, physical perfection, and vast technological progress. The novel was extremely popular in its time and is now considered seminal science fiction text by contemporary scholars.am a native of _____, in the United States of America. Vril - The Power of the Coming Race

Autor: Carl Abrahamsson , Edward Bulwer Lytton

Número de Páginas: 122

Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton's cautionary tale of occult super-powers and advanced subterranean cultures have fascinated readers since 1871. Part early science-fiction, part educational tract, part occult romance, Vril keeps spellbinding readers thanks to its wide range of themes and emotions, as well as its thrilling sense of adventure.A curious man descends into a mountain through a mine and experiences far more than he bargained for. Deep inside the mountain lies a completely different world. Its inhabitants, the Vril-ya, are human-like but physically superior and philosophically more advanced. They live in harmony made possible by their wisdom but also by the powerful and potentially destructive magical energy they call "Vril."The impressed yet terrified visitor is allowed to stay and learn more about their ancient and advanced culture, something very few visitors have - it seems that all the previous adventurers have been mercilessly disposed of by the Vril-ya...This edition includes an introductory essay by Swedish author Carl Abrahamsson.Trapart Books, 2020. 6x9" paperback, 122 pages.

The novel centres on a young, independent, unnamed, wealthy traveller (the narrator), who visits a friend, a mining engineer. They explore a natural chasm in a mine which has been exposed by an exploratory shaft. The narrator reaches the bottom of the chasm safely, but the rope breaks and his friend is killed. The narrator finds his way into a subterranean world occupied by beings who seem to resemble angels. He befriends the first being he meets, who guides him around a city that is reminiscent of ancient Egyptian architecture. The explorer meets his host's wife, two sons and daughter who learn to speak English by way of a makeshift dictionary during which the narrator unconsciously teaches them the language. His guide comes towards him, and he and his daughter, Zee, explain who they are and how they function. The hero discovers that these beings, who call themselves Vril-ya, have great telepathic and other parapsychological abilities, such as being able to transmit information, get rid of pain, and put others to sleep. The narrator is offended by the idea that the Vril-ya are better adapted to learn about him than he is to learn about them. Nevertheless, the guide (who turns out ...

The plot of this book was recycled for numerous 'B' pulp scifi movies.

The Coming Race

Autor: Edward Bulwer-lytton , Edward Bulwer Lytton Lytton, Baron

Número de Páginas: 228

Full text. The Coming Race (also known as Vril, the Power of the Coming Race)is a powerful novel that fired the imagination of readers starting in the 1870's. Among the earliest examples of what would become the genre of science fiction, among many authors it influenced H. G. Wells, Samuel Butler, and Edgar Rice Burroughs. The book tells the story of a young American adventurer who discovers a portal to an underground world at the bottom of a mine shaft. In this world lives a highly advanced race, with a dark secret. Quote: Our public libraries contain all the books of the past which time has preserved; those books, for the reasons above stated, are infinitely better than any can write nowadays, and they are open to all to read without cost. We are not such fools as to pay for reading inferior books, when we can read superior books for nothing.

Tierra Hueca.

The Coming Race

Autor: Edward Bulwer Lytton Lytton, Baron

Número de Páginas: 116

The Coming Race is a science fiction novel by Edward Bulwer-Lytton. The novel centers on a young, independently wealthy traveler who accidentally finds his way into a subterranean world occupied by beings who seem to resemble angels and call themselves Vril-ya. The hero soon discovers that the Vril-ya are descendants of an antediluvian civilization who live in networks of subterranean caverns linked by tunnels. It is a technologically supported Utopia, chief among their tools being the "all-permeating fluid" called "Vril", a latent source of energy which his spiritually elevated hosts are able to master through training of their will, to a degree which depends upon their hereditary constitution, giving them access to an extraordinary force that can be controlled at will. The powers of the will include the ability to heal, change, and destroy beings and things. The Vril-ya will run out of habitable spaces underground and start claiming the surface of the Earth, destroying mankind in the process if necessary.

- A Victorian science fiction novel, in a utopian world hidden inside the earth. - It tells the story of a desultory wanderer who descends into a mine and finds himself in a cavernous world occupied by a graceful and advanced race who have achieved the mastery over the mysterious Vril. In order to control Vril, technology on itself is not enough, a human needs to develop a special nerve just to be able to operate the machines that command Vril, this unification of technology development with biological, mental and even spiritual advance has given Vril a special attention in esoteric circles, but if Bulwer Lytton came to this concept at his esoteric studies or just as a rather practical solution to the conflict of machines replacing men, (why not both?) is just speculations.-Truth is that "Vril, The Power of the Coming Race" a.k.a. "The Coming race" remains as a profound, and at the same time, entertaining adventure/romance story in a utopian world, often spiced with plain satire, I'm sure you will enjoy it as your ideals and passions are turned on, on time, by this fantastic narrative.-This edition includes a small 7 pages introduction and glossary to the Vril-ya language made...

Jack Kirby.
