Milton dedicó su alegato a la institución que, en el Reino Unido, sería la correspondiente del Areópago, el tribunal ateniense, para cuestionar las medidas de regulación y control oficiales de los medios. El poeta sufrió cárcel y estuvo cerca de ser ejecutado por sus actividades propagandísticas, pero expuso, en el siglo XVII, una polémica que sigue vigente.

John Milton wrote at a time of religious flux and political upheaval, and is best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost (1667). As poet, statesman, and pamphleteer, John Milton remains one of the singular champions of liberty in the annals of history.
