Topics In Low Dimensional Topology: In Honor Of Steve Armentrout - Proceedings Of The Conference On Low-dimensional Topology

Autor: Augustin Banyaga , H Movahedi-lankarani , Robert Wells

Número de Páginas: 136

Recent success with the four-dimensional Poincaré conjecture has revived interest in low-dimensional topology, especially the three-dimensional Poincaré conjecture and other aspects of the problems of classifying three-dimensional manifolds. These problems have a driving force, and have generated a great body of research, as well as insight. The main topics treated in this book include a paper by V Poenaru on the Poincaré conjecture and its ramifications, giving an insight into the herculean work of the author on the subject. Steve Armentrout's paper on “Bing's dogbone space” belongs to the topics in three-dimensional topology motivated by the Poincaré conjecture. S Singh gives a nice synthesis of Armentrout's work. Also included in the volume are shorter original papers, dealing with somewhat different aspects of geometry, and dedicated to Armentrout by his colleagues — Augustin Banyaga (and Jean-Pierre Ezin), David Hurtubise, Hossein Movahedi-Lankarani and Robert Wells.

The result of more than twenty years' research, this seven-volume book lists over 23,000 people and 8,500 marriages, all related to each other by birth or marriage and grouped into families with the surnames Brandt, Cencia, Cressman, Dybdall, Froelich, Henry, Knutson, Kohn, Krenz, Marsh, Meilgaard, Newell, Panetti, Raub, Richardson, Serra, Tempera, Walters, Whirry, and Young. Other frequently-occurring surnames include: Greene, Bartlett, Eastman, Smith, Wright, Davis, Denison, Arnold, Brown, Johnson, Spencer, Crossmann, Colby, Knighten, Wilbur, Marsh, Parker, Olmstead, Bowman, Hawley, Curtis, Adams, Hollingsworth, Rowley, Millis, and Howell. A few records extend back as far as the tenth century in Europe. The earliest recorded arrival in the New World was in 1626 with many more arrivals in the 1630s and 1640s. Until recent decades, the family has lived entirely north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Organometallic Ion Chemistry

Organometallic Ion Chemistry

Autor: B.s. Freiser

Número de Páginas: 341

A study covering the gas-phase chemistry of organometallic ions. Topics covered include: periodic trends in gas-phase thermochemistry of transition metal-ligand systems; ab initio calculations to determine electronic structure, geometric structure, and thermochemistry of metal-containing systems; electronic state effects on metal ion reactivity; organometallic ion photochemistry; and applications of gas-phase electron transfer equilibria in organometallic redox thermochemistry. Also included are state-of-the-art mass spectrometric instrumentation used in such studies. It also features a comprehensive list (containing over 1500 entries) of metal ion-ligand bond energies, obtained from theory and experiment.

Metal-Ligand Interactions

Metal-Ligand Interactions

Autor: N. Russo , Dennis R. Salahub

Número de Páginas: 557

Metal-Ligand Interactions - Structure and Reactivity emphasizes the experimental determination of structure and dynamics, supported by the theoretical and computational approaches needed to establish the concepts and guide the experiments. Leading experts present masterly surveys of: clusters, inorganic complexes, surfaces, catalysis, ab initio theory, density functional theory, semiempirical methods, and dynamics. Besides the presentations of the fields of study themselves, the papers also bring out those aspects that impinge on, or could benefit from, progress in other disciplines. Refined in the fire of an interactive and stimulating conference, the papers presented here represent the state of the art of current research.

Modern Mass Spectrometry

Modern Mass Spectrometry

Autor: Peter B. Armentrout

Número de Páginas: 318

Mass spectrometers are used by almost all chemists and many researchers from neighboring disciplines such as physics, medicine, or biology as a powerful a- lytical tool. Its advantages are high sensitivity, speed, and almost no sample c- sumption. During the last two decades, mass spectrometry experienced a boom of new developments pushing its limits further and further at an increasing speed - just similar to the progress in NMR spectroscopy in the 1970s. However, a mass spectrometer does not only serve as a machine for solving complicated analytical problems, it evolved meanwhile to a complete laboratory for the investigation of molecules, clusters, and other species under the envir- ment-free conditions of the highly diluted gas phase. These special conditions existing only in high vacuum change the properties of the particles under study significantly with respect to their energetics and reaction pathways. For ex- ple, temperature is a macroscopic property of a large ensemble of particles in thermal equilibrium and is thus not defined for a single ion. This fact has severe implications for the measurement of kinetic and thermodynamic data of g- phase species. On the other...

Organometallic Bonding and Reactivity

Organometallic Bonding and Reactivity

Autor: J.m. Brown , P. Hofmann

Número de Páginas: 206

The making and breaking of carbon-metal bonds is fundamental to all the processes of organometallic chemistry and metal mediated homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysis. The ever expanding scope of highly specific stoichiometric and catalytic transformations or organic substrates involving metals requires a thorough physical and theoretical understanding of fundamental principles of organometallic structure and reactivity. Diffraction experiments form the basis of tailoring the molecular architecture of organometallic compounds for specific functions. Mass spectrometric techniques possess the power to provide direct information on the energetics of transient species generated in the gas-phase. Computational chemistry with ab initio or density functional methods make a reliable numerical assessment of structures and (relative) energies increasingly feasible. Embedding methods, combining quantum chemistry with force field of semiempirical MO treatments, quantum dynamic studies and the computational modelling of solvent effects extend the utility of the basic methods. This volume in the series Topics in Organometallic Chemistry presents a survey by renowned experts of important...

Death in Briar Bottom

Death in Briar Bottom

Autor: Timothy Silver

Número de Páginas: 209

On July 3, 1972, twenty-four hippies from Clearwater, Florida, set up tents and settled in for the night at Briar Bottom, a public US Forest Service campground in western North Carolina. The impromptu campout was a pit stop for the group on their way to a Rolling Stones concert in Charlotte. Early that evening, they drank beer, smoked marijuana, and listened to rock music as they anticipated the good times that lay ahead. Near midnight, the county sheriff showed up with six deputies, allegedly responding to a noise complaint. They were armed with pistols and five sawed-off 12-gauge shotguns, one of which discharged, killing a young man named Stanley Altland. To this day, no one has been held responsible for the tragic incident, though it happened in front of over a dozen eyewitnesses. Timothy Silver writes the true story of Altland's death and its aftermath, using archival research, interviews with surviving Clearwater campers, and newly unearthed FBI files. A mix of true crime, southern history, and personal storytelling, this book shows how, in the dark of night at a remote mountain campsite, the killing of an innocent man epitomized the suspicion of young people and violence...

The Alkali Metal Ions: Their Role for Life

The Alkali Metal Ions: Their Role for Life

Autor: Astrid Sigel , Helmut Sigel , Roland K. O. Sigel

Número de Páginas: 663

MILS-16 provides an up-to-date review of the impact of alkali metal ions on life. Their bioinorganic chemistry and analytical determination, the solid state structures of bio-ligand complexes and the properties of alkali metal ions in solution in the context of all kinds of biologically relevant ligands are covered, this includes proteins (enzymes) and nucleic acids (G-quadruplexes). Minerals containing sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) are abundant in the Earth's crust, making Na+ and K+ easily available. In contrast, the alkali elements lithium (Li+), rubidium, and cesium are rare and the radioactive francium occurs only in traces. Since the intra- and extracellular, as well as the compartmental concentrations of Na+ and K+ differ significantly, homeostasis and active transport of these ions are important; this involves transporters/carriers and pore-forming ion channel proteins. Systems like Na+/K+-ATPases, H+/K+-ATPases or Na+/H+ antiporters are thoroughly discussed. The role of K+ in photosynthesis and the role of Na+ in charging the "battery of life" are pointed out. Also, the relationships between alkali metal ions and diseases (e.g., Parkinson or traumatic brain injury) are...
