One of the world's top experts on betrayal looks at why we often can't see it right in front of our faces If the cover-up is worse than the crime, blindness to betrayal can be worse than the betrayal itself. Whether the betrayer is an unfaithful spouse, an abusive authority figure, an unfair boss, or a corrupt institution, we often refuse to see the truth order to protect ourselves. This book explores the fascinating phenomenon of how and why we ignore or deny betrayal, and what we can gain by transforming "betrayal blindness" into insight. Explains the psychological phenomenon of "betrayal blindness", in which we implicitly choose unawareness in order to avoid the risk of seeing treachery or injustice Based on the authors' substantial original research and clinical experience carried out over the last decade as well as their own story of confronting betrayal Filled with fascinating case studies involving unfaithful spouses, abusive authority figures and corrupt institutions, to name a few In a remarkable collaboration of science and clinical perspectives, Jennifer Freyd, one of the world's top experts on betrayal and child abuse, teams up with Pamela Birrell, a psychotherapist...
Some really great books just keep getting better! For seventeen years The Betrayal Bond has been the primary source for therapists and patients wrestling the effects of emotional pain and harm caused by exploitation from someone they trusted. Divorce, litigation, incest and child abuse, domestic violence, kidnapping, professional exploitation and religious abuse are all areas of trauma bonding. These are situations and relationships of incredible intensity or importance lend themselves more easily to an exploitation of trust or power. In The Betrayal Bond, Dr. Carnes presents an in-depth study of these relationships; why they form, who is most susceptible, and how they become so powerful. Dr. Carnes also gives a clear explanation of the bond that compels people to tolerate the intolerable, and for the first time, maps out the brain connection that makes being with hurtful people comparable to 'a drug of choice.' Most importantly, Carnes provides practical steps to identify compulsive attachment patterns and ultimately to change or end them for good. This new edition includes: New science for understanding how our brains can make a prison of bad relationships New assessments and...

Betrayal in friendships can take many forms, and it often stems from a place of envy or jealousy. Perhaps your friend is envious of your success, your relationship, or your marriage. Instead of celebrating your achievements, they may feel threatened by them and resort to underhanded tactics to bring you down. One of the key signs of betrayal in a friendship is when your friend starts to exhibit behaviors that are out of character. They may become overly critical of you, constantly belittle your accomplishments, or even spread rumors behind your back. These actions stem from their own insecurities and feelings of inadequacy, which they project onto you in an attempt to level the playing field. Another red flag to watch out for is when your friend starts to distance themselves from you without any valid reason. They may become elusive, avoid spending time with you, or suddenly become too busy to meet up. This could be a sign that they are trying to create space between you so that they can carry out their betrayal without arousing suspicion. Furthermore, pay attention to how your friend reacts to your successes and failures.

Betrayal in all its forms has been and is an ever present reality in every area of life--politics, business, and human relationships to name a few. Recent publications have chronicled the unethical actions of mental health and other human service professionals, yet the psychology of betrayal has received little public interest and attention. This book explores the many issues relating to psychotherapy and betrayal. The contributing authors of Betrayal in Psychotherapy and its Antidotes present the various faces of betrayal as may be encountered by therapists in the office or in the profession. They challenge therapists to understand the violations of trust that can occur within the therapeutic relationship. Readers are reminded that the trauma of betrayal manifests itself within all patients, regardless of of the nature and expression of psychopathology. More importantly, the authors define betrayal as experienced with specific cases and they attempt to bring out underlying principles that are useful to therapists and the larger professional community.Readers will find their understanding of the concept of betrayal much expanded from the chapters in Betrayal in Psychotherapy and...
"Canada's journey to Confederation kicked off with a bang - or rather, a circus, a Civil War (American), a small fortune's worth of champagne, and a lot of making love in the old-fashioned sense (courting, that is). Miss Confederation is a rare opportunity to look back through a woman's eyes at the men and events at the centre of this pivotal time in Canada's history. Mercy Coles, the daughter of PEI delegate George Coles, kept a diary of the social happenings and political manoeuvrings as they affected her and her desires. A unique historical document, her diary is now being published for the first time, offering a window into the events that led to Canada's creation, from a point of view that has long been neglected."--
The downfall of Jean Vanier due to the history of sexual abuse that came to light in 2020 has shocked everyone familiar with his life and work as the founder and leader of L'Arche. The authors in this book raise significant questions regarding his influential legacy and its relevance for theology and disability and for L'Arche in particular. Without any attempt to whitewash or downplay the seriousness of his transgressions, the question cannot be avoided to sort out the good and the bad in Vanier. It requires soul-searching on the part of his theological heirs and those who have been influenced by him. Finally, his work with and influence upon L'Arche raises the question of sustainability and how its communities might--or might not--be shaped by his tarnished legacy.
The Price of Passion: Betrayal and the Quest for Redemption In human experience, few themes resonate as profoundly as that of passion—its intoxicating allure, its capacity to inspire, and, paradoxically, its potential to devastate. "The Price of Passion: Betrayal and the Quest for Redemption" invites readers into a world where fervent desires clash with moral dilemmas, where the heart's deepest yearnings can lead to both sublime triumphs and catastrophic failures. This narrative is not merely a tale; it is an exploration of the very essence of what it means to be human. At its core, this work delves into the duality of passion—a force that can ignite creativity and drive individuals toward greatness, yet simultaneously serve as a catalyst for betrayal. The characters within this story are not mere figments of imagination; they are reflections of our own struggles, embodying the complexities of love, ambition, and the often-painful consequences that arise when one’s desires overshadow ethical considerations. As we traverse their journeys, we are compelled to confront uncomfortable truths about our own lives: What lengths would we go to in pursuit of our passions? What...
This book discusses undercover reporting, betrayal and deception in journalism, addressing the ethical issues encountered by professionals when deception is involved and providing an explanation of how high-profile cases have developed. Carson and Muller begin by examining how philosophical theories which form the basis of contemporary ethical codes for journalists, bear upon undercover reporting and questions of deception in the digital age. Drawing upon case studies such as Al Jazeera’s undercover operation against the National Rifle Association in the US and the One Nation political party in Australia, and Britain’s Channel 4 infiltration of Cambridge Analytica, this book goes on to define and discuss the ethical concepts behind deception and betrayal and lays out an original ethical framework for undercover journalists facing related challenges in their work. Undercover Reporting, Deception, and Betrayal in Journalism is an important research text for students and academics in journalism and media studies.

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 The pain of intimate betrayal is real and comes from a primitive part of the brain that developed to protect us from leaving the tribe. It is highly irrational, but it is nonetheless powerful. #2 Intimate betrayal is defined as a sudden revelation or a gradual realization of your partner having lied, manipulated, stolen, or cheated. It can be difficult to deal with, as it can strike suddenly and unexpectedly, or it can be a gradual realization of your life never being the same after your partner’s betrayal. #3 betrayal and anger are typically inseparable, for a while. The reasons are more biological than psychological. Anger temporarily numb pain and provide a surge of energy to overcome perceived threat. #4 The cycle of anger and resentment that typically follows intimate betrayal is: you think about the betrayal and get angry. The anger increases your energy, confidence, and sense of power. Then the amphetamine crash happens. The loss of energy and power create a void that is soon filled by self-doubt, depressed mood, or numbness.

In 1127 Charles the Good, count of Flanders, was surrounded by assassins while at prayer and killed by a sword blow to the forehead. His murder upset the fragile balance of power between England, France, and the Holy Roman Empire, giving rise to a bloody civil war while impacting the commercial life of medieval Europe. The eyewitness account by the Flemish cleric Galbert of Bruges of the assassination and the struggle for power that ensued is the only journal to have survived from twelfth century Europe. This new translation by medieval studies expert Jeff Rider greatly improves upon all previous versions, substantially advancing scholarship on the Middle Ages while granting new life and immediacy to Galbert’s well informed and courageously candid narrative.
Understanding the Sexual Betrayal of Boys and Men: The Trauma of Sexual Abuse is an indispensable go-to book for understanding male sexual victimization. It has become increasingly clear since the 1980s that men and boys, like women and girls, are sexually abused and assaulted in alarming numbers. Yet there have been few resources available to victims, their loved ones, or those trying to help them. Richard B. Gartner was in the vanguard of clinicians treating male sexual victimization and has written extensively about it, initially in professional papers, then in his landmark 1999 book for clinicians Betrayed as Boys: Psychodynamic Treatment of Sexually Abused Men, continuing with his 2005 work Beyond Betrayal: Taking Charge of Your Life after Boyhood Sexual Abuse. He has been a tireless teacher, clinician, and advocate for male victims of sexual abuse in the classroom, the lecture hall, and of course the consulting room as well as in newspaper, television, radio, and online interviews. Dr. Gartner has gathered together expert colleagues from the trauma, psychoanalytic, medical, and survivor treatment fields. Together, they have created a comprehensive guide to what was once...

This book is carefully written. It is a classic on exposing the kiss of betrayal. No stone is left unturned as Matthew explores profound concepts and answers questions many are afraid to ask, forbidden questions as "Who is my betrayer? How does one identify a betrayer? Am I a betrayer? What are the heart-wrenching questions of betrayal? How should one cope with the sting of betrayal?" From the president to the pauper, from the pastor to the member, this book is related in a manner that we all can identify. Betraying Betrayal transcends the borders of hypocrisy, posturing, and speciousness. It brings to light the dark realities of being betrayed. Having felt the pangs of betrayal himself, Matthew offers hope on how to move from being a victim to becoming the victor who eventually betrays betrayal.

In 2002, the national spotlight fell on Boston’s archdiocese, where decades of rampant sexual misconduct from priests—and the church’s systematic cover-ups—were exposed by reporters from the Boston Globe. The sordid and tragic stories of abuse and secrecy led many to leave the church outright and others to rekindle their faith and deny any suggestions of institutional wrongdoing. But a number of Catholics vowed to find a middle ground between these two extremes: keeping their faith while simultaneously working to change the church for the better. Beyond Betrayal charts a nationwide identity shift through the story of one chapter of Voice of the Faithful (VOTF), an organization founded in the scandal’s aftermath. VOTF had three goals: helping survivors of abuse; supporting priests who were either innocent or took risky public stands against the wrongdoers; and pursuing a broad set of structural changes in the church. Patricia Ewick and Marc W. Steinberg follow two years in the life of one of the longest-lived and most active chapters of VOTF, whose thwarted early efforts at ecclesiastical reform led them to realize that before they could change the Catholic Church, they...
