He Saved My Boy

Autor: Amanda Shelley

Número de Páginas: 199

Davis is the first guy to catch my attention since… hell I don’t even know. Instantly, he made me think and feel things I forgot existed. It has been forever since I put my needs first, so I took the chance and let him light me up from the inside out. Little did I know one night with him would ruin me for all others. But then I got the dreaded call. I rushed out without a second glance, knowing I’d likely never see him again. My son will always come first – Always. Imagine my surprise when Davis walks in and I find he’s the only one who can save my boy. This cannot be happening – I guess it’s time to pull up my big girl panties and see what happens.

Drew

Drew

Autor: Amanda Shelley

Número de Páginas: 379

Of all people, why him? He didn’t EVEN bother introducing himself, just assumed I knew him from his fame on the court. I nearly died on the spot when our professor announced we were permanent lab partners. Between his arrogance and the constant interruption from basketball groupies, there’s no way I’ll survive this semester. Sure, he’s hotter than anyone I’ve ever seen in a science lab with his sexy blue eyes, cute dimple, and muscles for days - but I can’t afford his kind of distractions. Okay. Deep breath. I can do this. After all, it’s only one semester. Just when I think my self-control is in check, he does something to show me that he isn’t the egotistical, self-centered jerk I thought he was. How can his stupid smile suddenly make my mind melt, heart race, and palms sweat? If I take this chance on Drew, will my perfectly laid out plans disappear?

Violent Intimacies

Violent Intimacies

Autor: Asli Zengin

Número de Páginas: 190

In Violent Intimacies, Aslı Zengin traces how trans people in Turkey creatively negotiate and resist everyday cisheteronormative violence. Drawing on the history and ethnography of the trans communal life in Istanbul, Zengin develops an understanding of cisheteronormative violence that expands beyond sex, gender and sexuality. She shows how cisheteronormativity forms a connective tissue among neoliberal governmentality, biopolitical and necropolitical regimes, nationalist religiosity and authoritarian management of social difference. As much as trans people are shaped by these processes, they also transform them in intimate ways. Transness in Turkey provides an insightful site for developing new perspectives on statecraft, securitization and surveillance, family and kin-making, urban geography, and political life. Zengin offers the concept of violent intimacies to theorize this entangled world of the trans everyday where violence and intimacy are co-constitutive. Violent intimacies emerge from trans people’s everyday interactions with the police, religious and medical institutions, street life, family and kinship, and trans femicides and funerals. The dynamic of violent...

What You Must Know About Hashimoto’s Disease

What You Must Know About Hashimoto’s Disease

Autor: Brittany Henderson , Allison Futterman

Número de Páginas: 254

In the United States, it is estimated that over 20 million people have thyroid problems. And of this number, the most common thyroid condition is Hashimoto’s Disease—a form of hypothyroidism in which the body’s immune system attacks its own thyroid gland. Despite millions of people having this disease, many suffer with life-changing symptoms for years without being diagnosed. And even after diagnosis, many Hashimoto’s patients continue to experience debilitating effects from this disease. Fatigue, muscle and joint pain, weight gain, headaches, hair loss, and throat/neck pain are some of the commonly occurring symptoms. That’s why endocrinologist and thyroid specialist Dr. Brittany Henderson and patient Allison Futterman joined together to write What You Must Know About Hashimoto’s Disease. Realizing that far too many patients are not getting the information and care they need, the authors created this book to help those who are suffering from this all-too-common form of hypothyroidism. Written in understandable language, the authors give you an insider’s view of what you need to know about Hashimoto’s. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1, Getting to Know...

Leveraging AI for Human-Centered Learning

Leveraging AI for Human-Centered Learning

Autor: Marlee S. Bunch , Brittany R. Collins

Número de Páginas: 149

Leveraging AI for Human-Centered Learning provides intentional approaches to the integration of artificial intelligence tools into middle and high school classrooms, specifically to foster equity and social-emotional wellbeing. The overlap of AI with today’s schools poses pivotal questions about ethics, morality, inclusion, and human learning at a time when students are already reckoning with public health crises, systemic injustice, and other connected challenges. This book helps teachers examine the pros and cons of artificial intelligence—as used by both educators and students—as well as its implications for meaningful culturally responsive teaching and social-emotional learning efforts. Featuring activities, lesson plans, and discussion and writing prompts for use with adolescent learners, each chapter offers concrete pedagogical approaches and instructional innovations that align technological changes with learning objectives in ways that advance, rather than replace or neutralize, attention to equity and well-being.

Teaching Migrant Children in West Germany and Europe, 1949–1992

Teaching Migrant Children in West Germany and Europe, 1949–1992

Autor: Brittany Lehman

Número de Páginas: 270

This book examines the right to education for migrant children in Europe between 1949 and 1992. Using West Germany as a case study to explore European trends, the book analyzes how the Council of Europe and European Community’s ideological goals were implemented for specific national groups. The book starts with education for displaced persons and exiles in the 1950s, then compares schooling for Italian, Greek, and Turkish labor migrants, then circles back to asylum seekers and returning ethnic Germans. For each group, the state entries involved tried to balance equal education opportunities with the right to personhood, an effort which became particularly convoluted due to implicit biases. When the European Union was founded in 1993, children’s access to education depended on a complicated mix of legal status and perception of cultural compatibility. Despite claims that all children should have equal opportunities, children’s access was limited by citizenship and ethnic identity.

Seaweeds and Seaweed-Derived Compounds

Seaweeds and Seaweed-Derived Compounds

Autor: Fatih Ozogul , Monica Trif , Alexandru Rusu

Número de Páginas: 552

Recent advances in the industrial application and industrial development of seaweeds are important in addressing the world's growing needs for healthy nutrients. Seaweeds are a potentially sustainable feedstock for future food and feed, green chemicals, and fuels. For seaweed biorefinery, the fractionation of the biomass to co-produce multiple products is crucial in the efficient valorization of the aquatic biomass. Widespread use of seaweed is still limited by a number of factors including harvesting access, seasonality and geographical location of algae, toxicological aspects, as well as the availability of scalable production methods. A good example is protein isolation from algae, since current processes of algal protein isolation are time-consuming and economically unviable. Seaweeds and Seaweed-Derived Compounds offers a comprehensive overview of sustainable seaweeds for the recovery of low-cost dietary nutrients from algae and alga-based biomass and their validation to meet market the requirements of consumers and industry in different sectors. With chapters focusing on seaweeds as foods, pharmaceuticals and cosmetic and dermatological applications, this text provides...

Social Interaction Between Road Users and Automated Vehicles

Social Interaction Between Road Users and Automated Vehicles

Autor: Hatice Sahin Ippoliti

Número de Páginas: 185

Self-driving cars are currently operational in certain urban areas. Despite these designated zones presumed to be optimal, concerns over incident rates and shifting public opinion necessitate a focus on the social integration of these technologies. The ability of self-driving cars to navigate informal interactions and unexpected situations, a critical aspect of social behaviour, falls short due to the absence of human-centric communication transfer in urban mixed traffic where self-driving cars and humans coexist. Recognizing the social context of traffic, the thesis aims to address the gap in social interaction and position fully Automated Vehicles (AVs) as social agents. Achieving widespread accessibility for AVs goes beyond technological advancements; it requires successful social integration. The present thesis contends that failure to integrate the social agency of AVs during design could diminish their usability and overall success. Understanding social behaviour in traffic and how AVs function as social agents is crucial to resolving interaction challenges and ensuring seamless coexistence with human road users.

What is Medieval History?

What is Medieval History?

Autor: John H. Arnold

Número de Páginas: 150

Since its first publication in 2007, John H. Arnold’s What is Medieval History? has established itself as the leading introduction to the craft of the medieval historian. What is it that medieval historians do? How – and why – do they do it? Arnold discusses the creation of medieval history as a field, the nature of its sources, the intellectual tools used by medievalists, and some key areas of thematic importance from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Reformation. The fascinating case studies include a magical plot against a medieval pope, a fourteenth-century insurrection, and the importance of a kiss exchanged between two tenth-century noblemen. Throughout the book, readers are shown not only what medieval history is, but the cultural and political contexts in which it has been written. This anticipated second edition includes further exploration of the interdisciplinary techniques that can aid medieval historians, such as dialogue with scientists and archaeologists, and addresses some of the challenges – both medieval and modern – of the idea of a ‘global middle ages’. What is Medieval History? continues to demonstrate why the pursuit of medieval history is...

The 75th issue of TPQ comes at a time when the world is still in the grips of the COVID-19 pandemic. While not a new phenomenon, the concurrent swell in digital disinformation and misinformation has complicated the public health response on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as further eroded democratic values. Our Fall 2020 issue focuses on key challenges related to disinformation and misinformation, featuring analyses on social media usage, data protection and privacy, fact-checking, and the future of disinformation in a post-COVID-19 world. We are honored to publish this special and timely issue in collaboration with our longstanding partner, Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF). Foreign interference and manipulation tactics have not only been polluting the digital space, but have also been threatening democratic societies, institutions, and values.
