65,000 Years: A Short History of Australian Art

65,000 Years: A Short History of Australian Art

Autor: Marcia Langton , Judith Ryan

Número de Páginas: 355

65,000 Years: A Short History of Australian Art stares into the dark heart of Australia's brutal colonial history and offers new insights into the first art of this country. Long before Britain's invasion of Australia in 1788, First Peoples' cultural and design traditions flourished for thousands of generations. Their art shaped the continent as we know it today and the societies that thrived here; but these continuing artistic practices and new art forms were disregarded by the settlers, and not considered to be 'fine art' until the late 1980s. In this publication, twenty-five writers urge us to reconsider the art history that is unique to the Australian continent and to acknowledge its rise to prominence in modern times. Featuring new writing by leading thinkers across generations and disciplines, it celebrates Indigenous Australian art across media, time and language groups. Today Indigenous art and artists are at the forefront of contemporary art practice. In very real and tangible ways, this publication reveals the artistic brilliance of Australia's First Peoples and stands as a testament to their resilience. This book is published in association with a major exhibition at...

An Evil Love: The Life and Crimes of Fred West

An Evil Love: The Life and Crimes of Fred West

Autor: Geoffrey Wansell

Número de Páginas: 466

The reverberations from Fred West's crimes continue to this day. The story never dies. West was perhaps one of Britain's most evil, feared serial killers. His horrifying compulsion to kidnap, rape and torture his victims before murdering them showed a savagery and cruelty that can barely be believed. His 'House of Horrors' at 25 Cromwell Street, Gloucester, became a burial ground for the women who fell into his hands. This new publication of Geoffrey Wansell's iconic, bestselling true crime masterpiece comes thirty years after West was arrested, in 1992. Dead by suicide by 1994, he never truly faced justice for the twelve murders he was charged with. Wansell, chosen as West's official biographer, gained exclusive access to all West's police interviews, prison diaries, papers, solicitor interviews - and his private collection of video tapes, as well as all the interviews given by his wife, Rose West. Once and for all, he reveals the full story of Fred and Rose West's lives and crimes, in a chilling book that sets the standard for exploring the minds of our most feared serial killers - up close and personal.

The Case Against the General

The Case Against the General

Autor: Steve Albert

Número de Páginas: 480

"On December 20, 1989, George Bush, the President of the United States, ordered a military invasion of Panama. One of his stated aims was the capture and return of General Manuel Antonio Noriega, the leader of Panama, to stand trial in the United States. American prosecutors had accused Noriega of trafficking in illegal drugs and money laundering. Not since ancient Rome had one nation launched an invasion of another with the goal of bringing its ruler to justice. But was justice served?" "The Case Against the General is the full, untold story of Manuel Noriega's capture and trial. Reporter Steve Albert, granted unusual access by both defense and prosecution, brings to life the theatrical dynamics of a court case unique in the annals of American jurisprudence." "Was Noriega a criminal, properly subject to trial under American law, or was he a prisoner of war as he claimed? Was the U.S. government right to limit Noriega's access to classified information he believed vital to his defense? Was the United States justified in freezing Noriega's assets? Imbued with a deep understanding of the constitutional issues that this singular trial raises, the Case Against the General is...

Pacific Fury

Pacific Fury

Autor: Peter Thompson

Número de Páginas: 577

How Australia and her allies defeated the Japanese. Pearl Harbor; The Fall of Singapore; Curtin's Fight With Churchill; The Bombing Of Darwin; POW Camps; The Battle of Midway; Kokoda; Buna; Kamikaze Pilots; Hiroshima... These words alone are enough to convey the terror, courage and drama of the Pacific War, when the balance of power stood on a knife-edge and when the future of Australia was on the brink - threatened by Japanese aggression on the one hand and British deception on the other. After a conflict that took an unimaginable number of lives and ended with the unleashing of the most powerful weapon the world had ever seen, the Allies emerged victorious. Australia, however, was criticised by Churchill and his generals for showing cowardice in the face of the enemy and for not caring about the fate of other nations. The endorsement of these claims by several military historians today shows that the smear has not gone away. Until now. Peter Thompson presents, for the first time, an account of the conflict that places Australian voices and action at the heart of the struggle. Based on exclusive interviews with eyewitnesses and written with all the pace and verve you would expect ...
