On retient de Sparte et de la Laconie l’image d’une puissance militaire rivale d’Athènes à l’époque classique et d’une cité fermée dont les valeurs premières auraient été l’austérité et l’autarcie. Les fouilles archéologiques ont livré une tout autre image de Sparte à l’époque archaïque et la qualité des productions laconiennes met à mal le « mirage Spartiate » hérité des époques postérieures. C’est par l’étude de la céramique laconienne et de sa diffusion que cet ouvrage aborde le rayonnement de la Laconie dans le monde méditerranéen archaïque. Les multiples acteurs de la distribution de la céramique ont changé au cours de la période et il est certain que la présence de Laconiens à Tarente et en Cyrénaïque, les liens de proxénie avec des cités comme Olympie ou Samos, ont amplifié les rapports de la Laconie avec les cités et les peuples de la Méditerranée. Ces liens ont favorisé le déplacement des artisans notamment dans les sanctuaires. The sixth volume in the Institute of Classical Archaeology’s series on the rural countryside (chora) of Metaponto is a study of the Greek settlement at Sant’Angelo Vecchio. Located on a slope overlooking the Basento River, the site illustrates the extraordinary variety of settlements and uses of the territory from prehistory through the current day. Il est plus courant aujourd’hui de souligner les limites de l’approche stylistique que de reconnaître son apport à la connaissance d’une production artistique ou artisanale. Le reproche est d’autant plus accusé qu’elle constitue souvent, faute de données sur le contexte de découverte, le principal, voire le seul, critère de datation. Considérée sous cet angle, cette démarche finit par être considérée comme obsolète et erronée. L’actualisation des grands systèmes de classement a néanmoins ouvert la voie au développement d’une approche historique des styles fondée sur la combinaison d’observations internes et de données externes aux oeuvres. Located near the site of an earlier Greek sanctuary, this modest but well-appointed structure was an unexpected find from a period generally marked by large landholdings and monumental villas. Description of earlier periods of occupation (Neolithic and Greek) is followed by a detailed discussion of the farmhouse itself and its historical and socioeconomic context. The catalogs and analyses of finds include impressive deposits of coins from the late third and early fourth centuries AD. Use of virtual reality CAD software has yielded a deeper understanding of the architectural structure and its reconstruction. A remarkable feature is the small bath complex, with its examples of window glass. Les rapports entre « violence et jeu » font aujourd’hui l’objet de débats suscités par la banalisation d’une forme de violence virtuelle dans des jeux vidéo souvent brutaux. La généralisation de tels jeux invite à prendre du recul pour tenter de comprendre cette association, au premier abord paradoxale, en l’envisageant dans la longue durée. Cet ouvrage collectif révèle la récurrence, de l’Antiquité à aujourd’hui, de l’inscription de la violence dans les jeux d’enfants, comme d’adultes, et montre que les formes et les fonctions de violences ludiques ne sont pas que la conséquence d’un jeu qui tourne mal ou de l’inconséquence de joueurs peu respectueux de la règle. Bien au contraire, la violence, à des degrés variés d’intensité – généralement consentie, mais en partie canalisée par la règle –, apparaît potentiellement inscrite dans la situation ludique elle-même, comme l’exposent les différentes études de cas du volume, associé aux travaux du projet européen ERC Locus Ludi sur le jeu comme « fabrique » d’une société dans l’Antiquité classique.

Depuis que son statut scientifique a été établi à la fin du XIIIe siècle, l’archéologie funéraire se trouve au cœur des recherches menées sur les sociétés antiques d’Italie du Sud. Suscitant comme les vases l’admiration des élites culturelles, les marqueurs de tombe des nécropoles de la région se sont très tôt retrouvés dans les collections européennes, privés de contexte, et ont été étudiés par les historiens de l’art avant d’attirer l’attention des archéologues. En prenant en compte les questions de terminologie – bien qu’il soit moderne, le mot « marqueur » est pertinent – et sur la base d’un corpus d’environ huit cents éléments réunis dans une base de données en ligne, ce volume démontre qu’une étude minutieuse et méthodique des marqueurs enrichit la connaissance historique et ouvre de nouvelles perspectives. Patterns in the Production of Apulian Red-Figure Pottery

Most of the previous scholarship on Apulian red-figure pottery has focused on the cataloguing of collections, the attribution of vases to painters and workshops, iconographic and stylistic matters, and individual vessels and vase forms. This partly reflects the history of vase-painting scholarship, which grew out of antiquarian collecting during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and the fact that a full archaeological provenance is not preserved for the overwhelming majority of vessels. This book takes a different approach by using a database containing in excess of 13,500 vessels and fragments to identify patterns in the production and decoration of Apulian vases that cast light on the choices made by vase-producers and the preferences of their customers. Both in antiquity and in modern scholarship, classical Sparta has typically been viewed as an exceptional society, different in many respects from other Greek city-states. This view has recently come under challenge from revisionist historians, led by Stephen Hodkinson. This is the first book devoted explicitly to this lively historical controversy. Historians from Britain, Europe and the USA present different sides of the argument, using a variety of comparative approaches. The focus includes kingship and hegemonic structures, education and commensality, religious institutions and practice, helotage and ethnography. Nel 1962 Giuliana Riccioni riportava alla luce il complesso romano delle tre domus nell'area dell'ex Vescovado nel centro di Rimini. In quella situazione di emergenza (l'edificio, bombardato nella Seconda guerra mondiale, sarebbe stato demolito e sostituito da un condominio) le uniche notizie sugli scavi vennero da informazioni sintetiche e da un'unica, ma esauriente, relazione preliminare della Riccioni. L'edizione completa è stata quindi affidata alla cura di Luisa Mazzeo Saracino, che riprende le notizie dell'epoca, integrandole con nuovi importanti ricerche: esame delle strutture architettoniche, rielaborazione di appunti e misurazioni del sito, disegni dei mosaici, revisione dei dati di archivio e delle foto, e infine analisi archeometriche dei materiali più rappresentativi.
