Août 1914. La guerre déclarée, le peintre Moïse Kisling s’en fut au bureau de recrutement. « Je veux m’engager, expliqua-t-il, comme Kupka, Zadkine, Blaise Cendrars... » Dès le début de la Grande Guerre, plus de trente mille étrangers accourent pour défendre ce qu’ils nomment la « patrie de toutes les libertés ». Pour les accueillir, on crée quatre régiments aussitôt engagés en Argonne, en Artois, dans la Somme, en Champagne. En novembre 1915, exsangues, ces quatre régiments fusionnent pour former le régiment de marche de la Légion étrangère, ce prestigieux R.M.L.E., aux ordres du fameux colonel Rollet, qui en fera le régiment le plus décoré de l’armée française. Dissous en 1919, il est à nouveau reconstitué en 1943 pour participer à la campagne de France et d’Allemagne. La paix revenue, le régiment part pour l’Indochine où il se bat durement huit années durant à Cao Bang, au Laos, dans le Delta, à Diên Biên Phu. Ensuite, c’est l’Algérie, puis Madagascar. Aujourd’hui implanté en Guyane, le « régiment aux trois fourragÈres » participe aux gros travaux en forêt amazonienne, renouant avec la tradition des pionniers...
