Notre-Dame

Autor: Ken Follett

Número de Páginas: 88

Written in aid of the crucial restoration work to restore Paris’s great cathedral, Notre-Dame: A Short History of the Meaning of Cathedrals is a moving, short piece of non-fiction celebrating the stunning history of this beloved building, from Ken Follett, author of the multi-million copy selling Kingsbridge series. ‘Two days after Notre Dame burned, I flew to Paris to appear on the TV programme La Grande Librairie for a discussion about cathedrals. The following morning I had breakfast at the Hotel Bristol with my French publisher and she asked me to write a short book about Notre Dame and what it means to all of us. She said she would donate the publisher’s profits to the rebuilding fund and, if I wished, I could do the same with my royalties. Yes, I said; of course, I’d love to.’ – Ken Follett A minimum of 50p per copy on each sale of this book will go to the heritage and restoration charity La Fondation du Patrimoine.

Adventures in Philosophy at Notre Dame

Adventures in Philosophy at Notre Dame

Autor: Kenneth M. Sayre

Número de Páginas: 278

Adventures in Philosophy at Notre Dame recounts the fascinating history of the University of Notre Dame's Department of Philosophy, chronicling the challenges, difficulties, and tensions that accompanied its transition from an obscure outpost of scholasticism in the 1940s into one of the more distinguished philosophy departments in the world today. Its author, Kenneth Sayre, who has been a faculty member for over five decades, focuses on the people of the department, describing what they were like, how they got along with each other, and how their personal predilections and ambitions affected the affairs of the department overall. The book follows the department’s transition from its early Thomism to the philosophical pluralism of the 1970s, then traces its drift from pluralism to what Sayre terms "professionalism,” resulting in what some perceive as a severance from its Catholic roots by the turn of the century. Each chapter includes an extensive biography of an especially prominent department member, along with biographical sketches of other philosophers arriving during the period it covers. Central to the story overall are the charismatic Irishmen Ernan McMullin and Ralph...

The Hunchback of Notre Dame Sanctuary of Shadows

Autor: Sebastian Hale

Número de Páginas: 222

In the shadowed recesses of 15th-century Paris, where the majestic Notre Dame Cathedral looms over the bustling markets by day and the cobbled streets whisper secrets by night, darkness threatens to engulf the sanctuary of its most tormented soul—Quasimodo. In The Hunchback of Notre Dame: Sanctuary of Shadows, the clock strikes a fateful hour when a devastating fire ignites the cathedral's heart, and a fanatical zealot rises, determined to eradicate the very essence of what makes Paris a haven for outcasts and dreamers. Quasimodo, the hunchbacked bell-ringer often shunned by society, emerges from the shadows of his beloved cathedral, drawn by a sense of purpose that transcends his own suffering. As the flames consume the familiar stone walls of his sanctuary, he is unexpectedly thrust into the role of protector. The city he loves hangs in the balance, and alongside him stands the spirited Esmeralda, a Romani woman whose beauty radiates from her very soul, challenging the prejudices that bind them both. Together, they navigate a city rife with danger, love, and the indomitable spirit of justice. Yet, lurking within the heart of this historical drama is the tormented figure of...

'Well, personally, if you hadn't got a lot comin' to you I would take a bust at you myself, you lousy, crawlin', gum-shoein' dick. Have a drop of liquor, big boy.' Fado Alexandrino

Fado Alexandrino

Autor: António Lobo Antunes

Número de Páginas: 516

On the tenth anniversary of the return of their battalion from Mozambique, five men attempt to rekindle the fraternal bond that helped them survive the colonial war that was Portugal's Vietnam. In turn, they tell the stories of their lives before, during, and after the revolution that overthrew the long-lived Salazar dictatorship. Internationally acclaimed for his fictionalized memoir of the Angolan war, Antunes has, with Fado Alexandrino, raised a fabulous Lisbon from the ashes of his four failed but unforgettable protagonists, and in the process has firmly established his reputation as the century's foremost novelist in the Portuguese language. Fado Alexandrino is one of the richest novels to come out of Europe in recent years. Moreover, it reveals a society and culture still too little known to the English-speaking world.

Complete Works of Peter Cheyney. Lemmy Caution Books, Slim Callaghan Books, Dark Novels, Short Fiction

Autor: Peter Cheyney

Número de Páginas: 5959

Peter Cheyney is perhaps best known for his short stories and novels about agent/detective Lemmy Caution. Caution was first portrayed as a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent, and in later stories as a private detective. Another popular creation was the private detective Slim Callaghan who also appeared in a series of novels and subsequent film adaptations. He was constructed as a British response to the more hardboiled detectives of American fiction such as Sam Spade and Philip Marlowe. A meticulous researcher, Cheyney kept a massive set of files on criminal activity in London, but these were destroyed during the Blitz in 1941; he however, soon began to replace his collection of clippings. He dictated his work. Typically he would "act out" his stories for his secretary, Miss Sprauge, who would copy them down in shorthand and type them up later… Lemmy Caution Books This Man Is Dangerous Poison Ivy Dames Don't Care Can Ladies Kill? Unequal Partners

Unequal Partners

Autor: Casey Ritchie Clevenger

Número de Páginas: 281

When we think of Catholicism, we think of Europe and the United States as the seats of its power. But while much of Catholicism remains headquartered in the West, the Church’s center of gravity has shifted to Africa, Latin America, and developing Asia. Focused on the transnational Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, Unequal Partners explores the ways gender, race, economic inequality, and colonial history play out in religious organizations, revealing how their members are constantly negotiating and reworking the frameworks within which they operate. Taking us from Belgium and the United States to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, sociologist Casey Clevenger offers rare insight into how the sisters of this order work across national boundaries, shedding light on the complex relationships among individuals, social groups, and formal organizations. Throughout, Clevenger skillfully weaves the sisters’ own voices into her narrative, helping us understand how the order has remained whole over time. A thoughtful analysis of the ties that bind—and divide—the sisters, Unequal Partners is a rich look at transnationalism’s ongoing impact on Catholicism.
