Dangerous Queens of the Renaissance

Dangerous Queens of the Renaissance

Autor: Pasquale De Marco

Número de Páginas: 162

In the tumultuous era of the Renaissance, women found themselves caught in the crosshairs of change. The old rules and expectations were no longer valid, but the new ones had yet to be written. Some women seized this opportunity to break free from the constraints of the past and forge new paths for themselves. They became artists, writers, scientists, and explorers. They ruled kingdoms, led armies, and changed the course of history. Others found themselves trapped in a world that was changing too quickly for them to keep up. They were forced to conform to the old ways, even as they yearned for something more. They were silenced, marginalized, and forgotten. This book tells the stories of some of the most remarkable women of the Renaissance. Women who defied convention, broke barriers, and changed the world. Women who inspire us with their courage, their determination, and their unyielding spirit. From queens who ruled with iron fists to artists who captured the beauty of the human form, from scientists who unlocked the secrets of nature to explorers who sailed to the far corners of the world, these women left an indelible mark on history. Their stories are both inspiring and...

Beowulf and Other Stories

Beowulf and Other Stories

Autor: Joe Allard , Richard North

Número de Páginas: 577

Beowulf & Other Stories was first conceived in the belief that the study of Old English – and its close cousins, Old Icelandic and Anglo-Norman – can be a genuine delight, covering a period as replete with wonder, creativity and magic as any other in literature. Now in a fully revised second edition, the collection of essays written by leading academics in the field is set to build upon its established reputation as the standard introduction to the literatures of the time. Beowulf & Other Stories captures the fire and bloodlust of the great epic, Beowulf, and the sophistication and eroticism of the Exeter Riddles. Fresh interpretations give new life to the spiritual ecstasy of The Seafarer and to the imaginative dexterity of The Dream of the Rood, andprovide the student and general reader with all they might need to explore and enjoy this complex but rewarding field. The book sheds light, too, on the shadowy contexts of the period, with suggestive and highly readable essays on matters ranging from the dynamism of the Viking Age to Anglo-Saxon input into The Lord of the Rings, from the great religious prose works to the transition from Old to Middle English. It also branches...

House of Tudor

House of Tudor

Autor: Mickey Mayhew

Número de Páginas: 264

Forty-five gruesome but not gratuitous accounts from the Tudor reign, including the death of Richard III and the botched execution of Mary Queen of Scots. This decidedly darker take on the Tudors, from 1485 to 1603, covers a whole host of horrors from the Tudor reign. Particular attention is paid to the various gruesome ways in which the Tudors despatched their various villains and lawbreakers, from simple beheadings, to burnings and of course the dreaded hanging, drawing and quartering. Other chapters cover the various diseases prevalent during Tudor times, including the dreaded “Sweating Sickness”—rather topical at the moment, unfortunately—as well as the cures for these sicknesses, some of which were considered worse than the actual disease itself. The day-to-day living conditions of the general populace are also examined, as well as various social taboos and the punishments that accompanied them, i.e. the stocks, as well as punishment by exile. Tudor England was not a nice place to live by twenty-first-century standards, but the book will also serve to explain how it was still nevertheless a familiar home to our ancestors. “He does not shy away from the gory details, ...

St. George and the Witches

St. George and the Witches

Autor: J. W. Dunne

Número de Páginas: 137

In 'St. George and the Witches,' J. W. Dunne fabricates a fascinating tapestry of narrative that stands at the intersection of mythology, history, and early 20th-century sensibilities. With prose that deftly weaves together wit and erudition, Dunne explores the interplay of archetypal figures and their cultural implications, underscored by a subtext of psychological introspection. Though the work is steeped in the tradition of British literature, it successfully transcends time and geographical confines to resonate with universal themes. DigiCat Publishing's careful curation assures that the book's presentation aligns with contemporary appreciation for literary classics while preserving the original integrity of Dunne's vision. John William Dunne (1875-1949) was not only a writer but also an aeronautical engineer and philosopher, whose diverse interests infused his writing with a distinctive blend of technical precision and metaphysical speculation. Dunne's background in pioneering aeronautics and his preoccupation with the complexities of time, as evinced in his seminal work 'An Experiment with Time,' undoubtedly inform the structural and thematic elements of 'St. George and the...

The Tragic Histories of Mary Queen of Scots, 1560-1690

The Tragic Histories of Mary Queen of Scots, 1560-1690

Autor: John D. Staines

Número de Páginas: 284

Author John Staines here argues that sixteenth- and seventeenth-century writers in England, Scotland, and France wrote tragedies of the Queen of Scots - royal heroine or tyrant, martyr or whore - in order to move their audiences towards political action by shaping and directing the passions generated by the spectacle of her fall. In following the retellings of her history from her lifetime through the revolutions and political experiments of the seventeenth century, this study identifies two basic literary traditions of her tragedy: one conservative, sentimental, and royalist, the other radical, skeptical, and republican. Staines provides new readings of Spenser and Milton, as well as of early modern dramatists, to compile a comprehensive study of the writings about this important historical and literary figure. He charts developments in public rhetoric and political writing from the Elizabethan period through the Restoration, using the emotional representations of the life of this tragic woman and queen to explore early modern experiments in addressing and moving a public audience. By exploring the writing and rewriting of the tragic histories of the Queen of Scots, this book...

To All The World Must Die

To All The World Must Die

Autor: Paul Hemenway Altrocchi, Md

Número de Páginas: 481

Few are aware that the actual identity of William Shakespeare, a pen name, represents our greatest cultural mystery. Even fewer realize that Will Shakspere of Stratford-on-Avon was an uneducated businessman who never owned a book, knew no foreign languages, never traveled and never wrote a word of poetry or prose. Shakspere was a front for a complete fraud perpetrated by England's leading politician, Robert Cecil, for reasons of power and greed. The astonishing strength of Conventional Wisdom has kept the ruse going for 400 years, perpetrated by professors of English who, blinded by traditional dogma, refuse to accept the remarkable and growing body of evidence in favor of Edward de Vere. Volume 8 of the Anthology Series, Building the Case for Edward de Vere As Shakespeare, documents the quickening pace of Oxfordian discoveries in the late 1990s and early 2000s. These present massive problems for professors of English to combat in a convincing manner. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, 1991: "For present purposes, I shall confine my analysis to the Sherlock Holmes principle that sometimes the fact that a watchdog did not bark may provide a significant clue about the identity ...

The ChessCafe World Chess Champions Series Emanuel Lasker was a great chess fighter, thinker and researcher. He was possessed of gigantic playing strength, retaining the title of World s Number One Chessplayer for 27(!) years. Even after losing his crown, he kept his ability for a long time, as shown by his victories and prize-winning finishes in immensely powerful international tournaments when he was 54 (Moravska-Ostrava 1923), 55 (New York 1924), 56 (Moscow 1925), and even at 66 (Moscow 1935)! One of the chief postulates of the Second World Champion was the battle of honor. On the chessboard, lies and dishonesty have no place. These words of Lasker could serve, even today, as an example to every young chessplayer of how to relate to the Great Game. Emanuel Lasker was the first in history to achieve a universal style. This was a Style of the Future, which is why the Second World Champion would not be understood by many of his contemporaries, who believed that he had no style at all. Lasker s games of chess, like his entire chess legacy, will live forever! Join Russian chess historians Isaak and Vladimir Linder as they take you on a journey exploring the life and games of the...

Travel, Geography, and Empire in Latin Poetry

Travel, Geography, and Empire in Latin Poetry

Autor: Micah Young Myers , Erika Zimmermann Damer

Número de Páginas: 180

This volume considers representations of space and movement in sources ranging from Roman comedy to late antique verse, exploring how poetry in the Roman world is fundamentally shaped by its relationship to travel within the geography of Rome’s far-reaching empire. The volume surveys Roman poetics of travel and geography in sources ranging from Plautus to Augustan poetry, from the Flavians to Ausonius. The chapters offer a range of approaches to: the complex relationship between Latin poetry, Roman identity, imperialism, and travel and geospatial narratives; and the diachronic and generic evolutions of poetic descriptions of space and mobility. In addition, two chapters, including the concluding one, contextualize and respond to the volume’s discussion of poetry by looking at ways in which Romans not only write and read poems about travel and geography, but also make writing and reading part of the experience of traveling, as demonstrated in their epigraphic practices. The collection as a whole offers important insights into Roman poetics and into ancient notions of movement and geographical space. Travel, Geography, and Empire in Latin Poetry will be of interest to...

Número de Páginas: 257

Becoming Reinaldo Arenas explores the life and work of the Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas (1943–1990), who emerged on the Latin American cultural scene in the 1960s and quickly achieved literary fame. Yet as a political dissident and an openly gay man, Arenas also experienced discrimination and persecution; he produced much of his work amid political controversy and precarious living conditions. In 1980, having survived ostracism and incarceration in Cuba, he arrived in the United States during the Mariel boatlift. Ten years later, after struggling with poverty and AIDS in New York, Arenas committed suicide. Through insightful close readings of a selection of Arenas's works, including unpublished manuscripts and correspondence, Olivares examines the writer's personal, political, and artistic trajectory, focusing on his portrayals of family, sexuality, exile, and nostalgia. He documents Arenas's critical engagement with cultural and political developments in revolutionary Cuba and investigates the ways in which Arenas challenged literary and national norms. Olivares's analysis shows how Arenas drew on his life experiences to offer revealing perspectives on the Cuban Revolution, the ...
