Mark Di Suvero

Mark Di Suvero

Autor: Mark Di Suvero , IVAM Centre Julio González

Número de Páginas: 125

Sculptor Mark di Suvero first came to prominence in the waning moments of abstract expressionism. His large-scale sculptures, many formed of massive beams of steel, are characterized by spontaneity, energy, exuberance, and a belief in the unconscious origins of art. In a fascinating overview of his career, this volume presents one hundred of di Surero's largest sculptures, with the earliest dating from 1959, all documented in rich color photographs. Paired with the sculptures are di Surero's own writings, which comment on contemporary society and politics; consciousness and religion; and science, notably astrology, physics, and evolution. Also included are poems that have influenced the sculptor, by such writers as Marianne Moore, W. B. Yeats, William Shakespeare, Goethe, and Lao-tzu. An introductory essay by Barbara Rose, a longtime friend of the artist, sets the context for his work and discusses his philosophical approach. Both the writings and sculptures are divided thematically; the sections include early works and thought, economy and politics, human existence, mathematics-related topics, philosophy, symbols and myths, and world unity. Di Surero's thoughtful writings present ...

The Poetics of Speech in the Medieval Spanish Epic

Autor: Matthew Bailey

Número de Páginas: 147

'Matthew Bailey's work on medieval Hispanic epic poetry is most impressive. It is a unique contribution to our knowledge of the Old Spanish epic and offers a highly original advance in its field. This book will, of course, primarily be of interest to Hispano-Medievalists, but given its enlightened and far-reaching views - based on very wide reading - it will also be of significant interest to all medievalists and folklorists, regardless-of specialty'-Samuel Armistead, Department of Spanish, University of California, Davis The Poetics of Speech in the Medieval Spanish Epic explores the composition of manuscript texts in thirteenth-century Spain. Of the vernacular epic poems originating with the minstrels of this era, only three full-length works remain: Cantar de Mio Cid, Poema de Fernßn Gonzßlez, and Mocedades de Rodrigo, all preserved and recorded by members of the clergy. By analysing expressive traits found in these three poems, Matthew Bailey links them to the cognitive processes that take place in the minds of speakers as narration unfolds. In Latin and other vernacular texts from the same period, authors identify their sources as oral, describe oral compositional...
