Elena

Elena

Autor: Brigitte Baumont

Elena - the bar girl who became an empress and transformed an empire __________________________________________________ HIStory - or should it be HERstory? As is the case in some societies today, for the fi rst 300 years of the Roman Empire, women were the possessions of men. Many women resisted, some dying horribly rather than obeying orders to marry men chosen for them. HIStory barely mentions them. Another example of HIStory is the conversion of the Roman Empire from pagan to Christian by Constantine the Great. He issued the decrees. But: - his early coins have the Unvanquished Sun as their religious symbol, - his victory arch in Rome bears pagan symbols.. - he was ruthless in destroying opponents. - he had his fi rst born son executed, - he had his wife murdered in her bath. - he was not baptised until his death-bed. His mother Elena nurtured him through the turmoils and dangers of the time and became an important fi gure at court. She founded churches around the empire and gained a reputation as a holy person. She is regarded by the eastern church as equal to the apostles. The HERstory of Elena tells of her life from bar girl to empress through the perils of the late empire...

Addressing Modernity

Addressing Modernity

Autor: Hannes Bergthaller , Carsten Schinko

Número de Páginas: 366

Niklas Luhmann’s theory of social systems is one of the most ambitious attempts to create a coherent account of global modernity. Primarily interested in the fundamental structures of modern society, however, Luhmann himself paid relatively little attention to regional variations. The aim of this book is to seek out modernity in one particular location: The United States of America. Gathering essays from a group of cultural and literary scholars, sociologists, and philosophers, Addressing Modernity reassesses the claims of American exceptionalism by setting them in the context of Luhmann’s conception of modernity, and explores how social systems theory can generate new perspectives on what has often been described as the first thoroughly modern nation. As a study of American society and culture from a Luhmannian vantage point, the book is of interest to scholars from both American Studies and social systems theory in general.

An Ethno-Social Approach to Code Choice in Bilinguals Living with Alzheimer’s

An Ethno-Social Approach to Code Choice in Bilinguals Living with Alzheimer’s

Autor: Carolin Schneider

Número de Páginas: 267

This book examines the under-researched field of communication by bilingual people with dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT). The aging population is increasingly affected by neurocognitive diseases such as DAT, and over the past 30 years, the growing research body concerned with monolingual DAT discourses has seen significant growth. The findings from monolingual studies and institutional settings highlight the importance of code choice for a person’s sense of autonomy, especially against the background of changing communicational abilities. Adding a new perspective, this book investigates how ten Puerto Rican speakers living with varying stages of DAT draw on their bilingual resources to accomplish verbal interaction in informal settings with their primary care partners. Drawing on narrative interviews conducted in Orlando, Florida, this multi-case study investigates situated language choices and code-switches by applying the ethno-social approach, i.e. combining features of conversation analysis and ethnography of communication. The author sheds light both on the question of how people living with DAT engage in conversations and which strategies they employ in their...

The private enforcement of competition law through damages actions and/or injunctions before ordinary courts of justice is currently the preferred system in the United States. It is playing an increasingly important role in Europe by supplementing a still predominantly public system based on disciplinary rules enforced by public authorities that do not entail compensation for victims. Compensation can only be achieved through private enforcement, which is already viewed as an alternative to the public system. This work, whose origins lie in the International Conference on the private enforcement of Competition Law held at the University of Valladolid's School of Law offers a comprehensive, pluralist overview of the subject by providing transversal approaches, joint assessment and information on various national experiences alongside more specific contributions that study specific matters of substantive and procedural law, by covering practically all the relevant issues in this field. The work also addresses the main problems of the system vis-à-vis private international law and its connection and interaction with public enforcement. Also available in Spanish language, with the...

The Discovery of North America

The Discovery of North America

Autor: William Patterson Cumming , Raleigh Ashlin Skelton , David B. Quinn

Número de Páginas: 312

"This volume presents the discovery and exploration of the North American continent, from the earliest references down to the first permanent settlements, as described by the explorers themselves and delineated by contemporary Europeans. The vivid narratives of those who first sailed along its coasts, penetrated the unknown interior with its primeval forests, wide rivers, and hostile inhabitants, man and beast, are richly supplemented by the drawings of the explorers and by the conceptions of the land which they brought back to European mapmakers and artists. The geographical misconceptions of the discoverers, strange and absurd as they seem to us now, were exciting, stimulating, and often disastrous to the adventurers who came to seek wealth or freedom or glory in the new land. The illustrations are taken from rare contemporary records, manuscript and engraved maps, and original paintings of the period. Each section of the volume has an introductory historical essay which binds together the original narratives and the accompanying illustrations: the possible pre-Columbian explorations, the emerging knowledge of the east coast from Cabot to Cartier, the Spanish penetration of the...

Revisiting Second Language Sociolinguistics

Revisiting Second Language Sociolinguistics

Autor: Elena Kkese

Número de Páginas: 221

This book investigates socio-linguistic interactions in different second language (L2) contexts in an effort to identify the trends that lead to the acquisition of sociolinguistic variations by L2 learners, contributing significantly to L2 research and practice. It addresses sociolinguistic subjects such as multilingualism and its effects, as well as regional and social dialectology in L2. The different chapters explore the overall effect that society – including cultural norms, expectations, and contexts – has on L2 usage. They also consider how language varieties differ between groups separated by certain social variables such as ethnicity, religion, status, gender, level of education, and age, and how these variables categorise individuals into social or socioeconomic classes. The volume brings together careful theoretical and empirical research conducted in different countries, including Catalonia, Finland, Greece, Malta, Malaysia, the Republic of Cyprus, and the United Arab Emirates.

Latino Urban Ethnography and the Work of Elena Padilla

Latino Urban Ethnography and the Work of Elena Padilla

Autor: Merida M. Rua

Número de Páginas: 226

This study reclaims and builds upon the classic work of anthropologist Elena Padilla in an effort to examine constructions of space and identity among Latinos. The volume includes an annotated edition of Padilla's 1947 University of Chicago master's thesis, "Puerto Rican Immigrants in New York and Chicago: A Study in Comparative Assimilation," which broke with traditional urban ethnographies and examined racial identities and interethnic relations. Weighing the importance of gender and the interplay of labor, residence, and social networks, Padilla examined the integration of Puerto Rican migrants into the social and cultural life of the larger community where they settled. Also included are four comparative and interdisciplinary original essays that foreground the significance of Padilla's early study about Latinos in Chicago. Contributors discuss the implications of her groundbreaking contributions to urban ethnographic traditions and to the development of Puerto Rican studies and Latina/o studies. Contributors are Nicholas De Genova, Zaire Z. Dinzey-Flores, Elena Padilla, Ana Y. Ramos-Zayas, Mérida M. Rúa, and Arlene Torres.

The Game of Shadows

The Game of Shadows

Autor: Jett Vorn

Número de Páginas: 128

Folks, let me tell you something about shadows. They’re not just the dark patches that trail you when the sun’s high or the streetlights hum. No, shadows are secrets, the kind that creep into your bones and whisper things you don’t want to hear—things you can’t unhear. They’re the weight of a truth you’d rather bury, the kind that claws its way out of the dirt no matter how deep you dig. And in The Game of Shadows, Elena Rossi’s chasing those secrets, running headlong into a darkness that’s been waiting for her since the day her world burned down. Imagine a woman, tough as nails but cracked in places she won’t admit, standing in the ashes of her family’s home in Kyiv, her father’s screams still ringing in her ears. Elena’s a journalist, you see, the kind who’d rather bleed than back down, and she’s got a fire in her that’s half rage, half something else—something older, like a promise carved in stone. Her daddy was a keeper of truths, dangerous ones, and he left her a puzzle: a box, a mystery, a map to a conspiracy that makes the world’s wars and plagues look like puppet shows. The True Power, they call themselves—fanatics who think...

Explaining Russian-German code-mixing

Explaining Russian-German code-mixing

Autor: Nikolay Hakimov

Número de Páginas: 306

The study of grammatical variation in language mixing has been at the core of research into bilingual language practices. Although various motivations have been proposed in the literature to account for possible mixing patterns, some of them are either controversial, or remain untested. Little is still known about whether and how frequency of use of linguistic elements can contribute to the patterning of bilingual talk. This book is the first to systematically explore the factor usage frequency in a corpus of bilingual speech. The two aims are (i) to describe and analyze the variation in mixing patterns in the speech of Russia German adolescents and young adults in Germany, and (ii) to propose and test usage-based explanations of variation in mixing patterns in three morphosyntactic contexts: the adjective-modified noun phrase, the prepositional phrase, and the plural marking of German noun insertions in bilingual sentences. In these contexts, German noun insertions combine with either Russian or German words and grammatical markers, thus yielding mixed bilingual and German monolingual constituents in otherwise Russian sentences, the latter also labelled as embedded-language...
