Autor: Ian Hamilton Finlay , Stephen Bann

Número de Páginas: 407

Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925–2006) was one of Scotland's leading twentieth-century public intellectuals, and famously one of its most brilliant and combative correspondents. His letters raise issues of particular and widespread interest both within Scotland and further afield. His correspondence with Stephen Bann, the English poet and academic, have a very special place in this context. These letters present in a clear and commensurable form the development of his ideas about poetry and art, and increasingly about sculpture and gardening, over this critical five-year period of his creative life. The letters begin when Bann was still a student at Cambridge, and Finlay was living in considerable hardship in Edinburgh, though he already had a significant international reputation as a poet. They reveal in fascinating and intimate detail the poet's developing creative process, and also record his often turbulent relationship to the worlds of literature, art, and critical journalism. When he settles in Lanarkshire, he begins to develop the ideas that will result in the creation of the world-famous sculpture garden known as Little Sparta. This book, edited, introduced, and annotated by...

Elizabeth's Women

Elizabeth's Women

Autor: Tracy Borman

Número de Páginas: 466

‘History as it should be written’ Alison Weir, bestselling author of the Six Tudor Queens series A groundbreaking and fascinating biography of England's most famous queen, viewed through the women who influenced her life. Elizabeth I is often portrayed as a ruthless 'man's woman', who derided her own sex – ‘I know I have the body of a weak and feeble woman' – and loved to flirt with the young men at her court. Yet she was born into a world of women and it is her relationships with these women that provide the most fascinating insight into the character of this remarkable monarch. As a child Elizabeth was raised by her mother, governesses and stepmothers, while as an adult she was clothed, bathed and watched by her ladies of the bedchamber and her maids of honour. With them she was jealous, spiteful and cruel, as well as loyal, kind and protective. Among her family it was her female relations who had the greatest influence on her life: from her sister Mary, who distrusted and later imprisoned her, to her cousin, Mary, Queen of Scots, who posed a constant and dangerous threat to her crown for almost thirty years. It was these women – and many more – who brought out the ...

Quaker Women

Quaker Women

Autor: Sandra Stanley Holton

Número de Páginas: 306

One nineteenth-century commentator noted the 'public' character of Quaker women as signalling a new era in female history. This study examines such claims through the story of middle-class women Friends from among the kinship circle created by the marriage in 1839 of Elizabeth Priestman and the future radical Quaker statesman, John Bright. The lives discussed here cover a period from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries, and include several women Friends active in radical politics and the women's movement, in the service of which they were able to mobilise extensive national and international networks. They also created and preserved a substantial archive of private papers, comprising letters and diaries full of humour and darkness, the spiritual and the mundane, family confidences and public debate, the daily round and affairs of state. The discovery of such a collection makes it possible to examine the relationship between the personal and public lives of these women Friends, explored through a number of topics including the nature of Quaker domestic and church cultures; the significance of kinship and church membership for the building of extensive Quaker...

The Palgrave Handbook of Shakespeare's Queens

The Palgrave Handbook of Shakespeare's Queens

Autor: Kavita Mudan Finn , Valerie Schutte

Número de Páginas: 523

Of Shakespeare’s thirty-seven plays, fifteen include queens. This collection gives these characters their due as powerful early modern women and agents of change, bringing together new perspectives from scholars of literature, history, theater, and the fine arts. Essays span Shakespeare’s career and cover a range of famous and lesser-known queens, from the furious Margaret of Anjou in the Henry VI plays to the quietly powerful Hermione in The Winter’s Tale; from vengeful Tamora in Titus Andronicus to Lady Macbeth. Early chapters situate readers in the critical concerns underpinning any discussion of Shakespeare and queenship: the ambiguous figure of Elizabeth I, and the knotty issue of gender presentation. The focus then moves to analysis of issues such as motherhood, intertextuality, and contemporary political contexts; close readings of individual plays; and investigations of rhetoric and theatricality. Featuring twenty-five chapters with a rich variety of themes and methodologies, this handbook is an invaluable reference for students and scholars, and a unique addition to the fields of Shakespeare and queenship studies. Winner of the 2020 Royal Studies Journal book prize

The War of 1812

Autor: Bud Hannings

Número de Páginas: 401

Although the American Revolution ended in 1783, tensions between the United States and Britain over disruptions to American trade, the impressment of American merchant sailors by British ships, and British support of Native American resistance to American expansion erupted in another military conflict nearly three decades later. Scarcely remembered in England today, the War of 1812 stood as a veritable "second war of independence" to the victorious Americans and ushered in an extended period of peaceful relations and trade between the United States and Britain. This major reference work offers a comprehensive day-by-day chronology of the War of 1812, including its slow build-up and aftermath, and provides detailed biographies of the generals who made their marks.

Dialectics

Dialectics

Autor: Paul Johnsen

Número de Páginas: 349

Dialectics teaches the rules, procedures, and codes used by a technologically advanced overseer, or god, to write a program for Earth and its inhabitants. According to Johnsen, this program was designed to last for two thousand seven hundred and seven years, beginning in 687 BC and ending in 2020. The aim of Dialectics is to prove the existence of a Master Programmer through intelligently designed puzzles. Dialectics demonstrates how the speed of light, Planck's constant, and a formula for anti gravity determine the rotation and position of the Earth and its surrounding planets. It shows the simultaneous planning of the Hebrew, Christian, and Islamic calendar reforms before 378 BC, the planned height and fall of the Roman Empire, the entanglement of emperors living 700 years apart, a Christian conspiracy headed by Dante, and the identity of Shakespeare. These and many more startling revelations are found in Dialectics, including the 1929 stock market crash, the 911 attack of the twin towers, and the economic meltdown of 2008. By proving the existence of God and his (or her) continuous interaction with people and events of this world, Dialectics gives the Darwinists some viable...
