Progress in Pattern Recognition, Image Analysis and Applications

Progress in Pattern Recognition, Image Analysis and Applications

Autor: Alberto Sanfeliu , José F. Martínez Trinidad , Jesús A. Carrasco Ochoa

Número de Páginas: 720

First of all, we want to congratulate two new research communities from M- ico and Brazil that have recently joined the Iberoamerican community and the International Association for Pattern Recognition. We believe that the series of congresses that started as the “Taller Iberoamericano de Reconocimiento de Patrones (TIARP)”, and later became the “Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition (CIARP)”, has contributed to these groupconsolidatione?orts. We hope that in the near future all the Iberoamerican countries will have their own groups and associations to promote our areas of interest; and that these congresses will serve as the forum for scienti?c research exchange, sharing of - pertise and new knowledge, and establishing contacts that improve cooperation between research groups in pattern recognition and related areas. CIARP 2004 (9th Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition) was the ninthinaseriesofpioneeringcongressesonpatternrecognitionintheIberoam- ican community. As in the previous year, CIARP 2004 also included worldwide participation. It took place in Puebla, Mexico. The aim of the congress was to promote and disseminate ongoing research and mathematical ...

Planeta de ciudades

Planeta de ciudades

Autor: Shlomo, Angel

The Collapse of Yugoslavia

The Collapse of Yugoslavia

Autor: Alastair Finlan

Número de Páginas: 145

An accessible illustrated introduction to the brutal conflict in the former Yugoslavia, one of the greatest yet least understood tragedies of the 20th century. In 1991, an ethnically diverse and peaceful region of Europe descended into violence, lawlessness, bitter hatred and chaos, almost overnight to the bewilderment of international observers. Communities fractured along lines of ethnic and religious affiliation, and the ensuing fighting was deeply personal, resulting in horrific brutality, rape, torture and genocide, causing the deaths of thousands of people. Drawing on the latest research for this new edition, Alastair Finlan examines the internal upheavals of the former Yugoslavia and their international implications, including the failure of the Vance-Owen plan; the first use of NATO in a combat role and in peace enforcement; and the war in Kosovo, unsanctioned by the UN but prosecuted by NATO forces to prevent the ethnic cleansing of the region. Updated and revised, with specially commissioned colour maps and all new images throughout, this is a concise overview of the tragic conflict in former Yugoslavia and its significant consequences.

Whether natural or manmade, disasters have long enthralled young readers. Examining Disasters, a well-reviewed series of eight books from Clara House Books, an imprint of The Oliver Press, explores the science behind disasters. What, for example, causes airplanes to fall from the sky, or bridges to collapse, or ships to sink? For explanations, we must look to physics. Seismic Architecture

Seismic Architecture

Autor: Mentor Llunji

Número de Páginas: 495

This is arguably the most comprehensive book on the subject of architectural-structural design decisions that influence the seismic performance of buildings. It explores the intersection between the architecture and the structural design through the lens of earthquake engineering. The main aim of this unique book, written by renowned engineer M.Llunji, is to explain in the simplest terms, the architecture and structure of earthquake-resistant buildings, using many practical examples and case studies to demonstrate the fact that structures and buildings react to earthquake forces mainly according to their form, configuration and material. The purpose of this book is to introduce a new perspective on seismic design,a more visual, conceptual and architectural one, to both architects and engineers. In a word, it is to introduce architectural opportunities for earthquake resistant- buildings, treating seismic design as a central architectural issue. A non-mathematical and practical approach emphasizing graphical presentation of problems and solutions makes it equally accessible to architectural and engineering professionals. The book will be invaluable for practicing engineers,...

A Woman In Charge

A Woman In Charge

Autor: Carl Bernstein

Número de Páginas: 666

A Woman in Charge reveals the true trajectory of Hillary's astonishing life and career. From a staunchly Republican household and apparently idyllic Midwestern girlhood - her disciplinarian father here revealed as harsher than she has acknowledged - we see the shaping of a brilliant girl whose curiosity was fuelled by the ferment of the 1960s and a desire to change the world. During her student years, she was already perceived as a spokeswoman for her generation. Then, at Yale Law School, she met and fell in love with Bill Clinton, cancelling her own dreams to tie her fortunes to his. Bernstein clarifies the often amazing dynamic of their marriage, charting both her political acumen and her blind spots, and untangling her relationship to the great controversies of Whitewater, Troopergate and Travelgate. And then, in the emotional and political chaos of the Lewinsky affair we see Hillary standing by her husband - evoking a rising wave of sympathy from a public previously cool to her and in effect, Bernstein argues, saving his presidency. It helps carry her into the Senate: her time has come. As she decides to run for President, this self-described 'mind-conservative and heart...

Reporting the Siege of Sarajevo

Reporting the Siege of Sarajevo

Autor: Kenneth Morrison , Paul Lowe

Número de Páginas: 265

The Siege of Sarajevo remains the longest siege in modern European history, lasting three times longer than the Battle of Stalingrad and over a year longer than the Siege of Leningrad. Reporting the Siege of Sarajevo provides the first detailed account of the reporting of this siege and the role that journalists played in highlighting both military and non-military aspects of it. The book draws on detailed primary and secondary material in English and Bosnian, as well as extensive interviews with international correspondents who covered events in Sarajevo from within siege lines. It also includes hitherto unpublished images taken by the co-author and award-winning photojournalist, Paul Lowe. Together Morrison and Lowe document a relatively short but crucial period in both the history of Bosnia & Herzegovina, the city of Sarajevo and the profession of journalism. The book provides crucial observations and insights into an under-researched aspect of a critical period in Europe's recent history.

Recent Advances in Artificial Intelligence Research and Development

Recent Advances in Artificial Intelligence Research and Development

Autor: Jordi Vitrià , Petia Radeva , Isabel Aguiló

Número de Páginas: 468

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a scientific field of longstanding tradition, with origins in the early years of computer science. Today AI has reached a level of maturity that allows us to build highly sophisticated systems which perform very different tasks. Nevertheless, its evolution has opened up a number of new problems, ranging from specific algorithms to system integration, which remain elusive and assure a long life for this research field. Research progress in this area is today an international challenge that must be supported by world-class meetings and organizations, but in spite of this fact, there is also an objective need for meetings and organizations that support and disseminate research at other levels. This book focuses on new and original research on Artificial Intelligence.

Living on an Active Earth

Living on an Active Earth

Autor: National Research Council , Division On Earth And Life Studies , Board On Earth Sciences And Resources , Committee On The Science Of Earthquakes

Número de Páginas: 431

The destructive force of earthquakes has stimulated human inquiry since ancient times, yet the scientific study of earthquakes is a surprisingly recent endeavor. Instrumental recordings of earthquakes were not made until the second half of the 19th century, and the primary mechanism for generating seismic waves was not identified until the beginning of the 20th century. From this recent start, a range of laboratory, field, and theoretical investigations have developed into a vigorous new discipline: the science of earthquakes. As a basic science, it provides a comprehensive understanding of earthquake behavior and related phenomena in the Earth and other terrestrial planets. As an applied science, it provides a knowledge base of great practical value for a global society whose infrastructure is built on the Earth's active crust. This book describes the growth and origins of earthquake science and identifies research and data collection efforts that will strengthen the scientific and social contributions of this exciting new discipline.

Living with Earth

Living with Earth

Autor: Travis Hudson

Número de Páginas: 1096

For many students with no science background, environmental geology may be one of the only science courses they ever take. Living With Earth: An Introduction to Environmental Geology is ideal for those students, fostering a better understanding of how they interact with Earth and how their actions can affect Earth's environmental health. The informal, reader-friendly presentation is organized around a few unifying perspectives: how the various Earth systems interact with one another; how Earth affects people (creating hazards but also providing essential resources); and how people affect Earth. Greater emphasis is placed on environment and sustainability than on geology, unlike other texts on the subject. Essential scientific foundations are presented - but the ultimate goal is to connect students proactively to their role as stakeholders in Earth's future.
