The Evolution of Psychopathology

The Evolution of Psychopathology

Autor: Todd K. Shackelford , Virgil Zeigler-hill

Número de Páginas: 233

This review of recent evolutionary theories on psychopathology takes on controversies and contradictions both with established psychological thought and within the evolutionary field itself. Opening with the ancestral origins of the familiar biopsychosocial model of psychological conditions, the book traces distinctive biological and cultural pathways shaping human development and their critical impact on psychiatric and medical disorders. Analyses of disparate phenomena such as jealousy, social anxiety, depressive symptoms, and antisocial behavior describe adaptive functions that have far outlasted their usefulness, or that require further study and perhaps new directions for treatment. In addition, the book’s compelling explorations of violence, greed, addiction, and suicide challenge us to revisit many of our assumptions regarding what it means to be human. Included in the coverage: · Evolutionary foundations of psychiatric compared to non-psychiatric disorders. · Evolutionary psychopathology, uncomplicated depression, and the distinction between normal and disordered sadness. · Depression: is rumination really adaptive? · A CBT approach to coping with sexual betrayal and ...

The Brenner Assignment

The Brenner Assignment

Autor: Patrick K. O'donnell

Número de Páginas: 330

An impossible mission Behind enemy lines The never-before-told true story of a small team of American saboteurs with orders to sever the Third Reich's main supply artery -- the Brenner Pass Like a scene from Where Eagles Dare , a small team of American special operatives parachutes into Italy under the noses of thousands of German troops. Their orders: link up with local partisans in the mountains and sabotage the well-guarded Brenner Pass, the crucial route through the Alps for the Nazi war machine. Without the supplies that travel this route, the German war effort in Italy will grind to a halt. Using thousands of recently declassified files, personal interviews, and private documents, including a behind-the-lines diary buried in a bottle, military historian Patrick K. O'Donnell has written a cinematic World War II adventure story. The unforgettable cast of characters includes the dashing and daring team leader; the romantic idealist who plans the operation; the seductive Italian countess who is also a double-agent; and the maniacal SS officer who will stop at nothing to kill the team and their partisan collaborators. The Brenner Assignment is also a World War II story that...

What Is Schizophrenia?

What Is Schizophrenia?

Autor: William F. Jr. Flack , Daniel R. Miller , Morton Wiener

Número de Páginas: 337

William F. Flack, Jr., Daniel R. Miller, and Morton Wiener What is schizophrenia?l This was the seemingly simple question posed to a diverse group of investigators asked to present their views at a conference sponsored by the Frances L. Hiatt School of Psychology at Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts, in June, 1990. The plan was to have a small group of theoretically minded clinicians and investigators from different professions and orientations convene to discuss and debate conceptual and metatheoretical issues surrounding "schizophrenia." Instead of concentrating on the latest empirical findings, we were primarily interested in having a series of exchanges 2 about the very different meanings and uses of this concept. In our review of the literature on schizophrenia, we uncovered what seemed to us to be multiple, non-overlapping uses of the term. For some investigators, it appears to be used to specify certain kinds of people; for others, it is employed to refer to certain kinds of behaviors. For still others, the term is grounded in biochemical events, or in socioculturally specific actions. A number of alternatives are explored in the contributors' papers in this volume.

Curandero Hispanic Ethno-Psychotherapy & Curanderismo

Autor: Antonio Noé Zavaleta Ph.d

Número de Páginas: 326

Curandero: Ethno-Psychotherapy & Curanderismo Hispanic Mental Health in the 21st Century, is the product of more than 50 years of the study of curanderismo and Hispanic mental health. In this book, Dr. Zavaleta examines curanderismo and the folk beliefs carried by immigrants across the U.S.-Mexico border. In the United States, the Hispanic population is notoriously underserved in both physical and mental health care. In Curandero, Dr. Zavaleta reviews the history of curanderismo, beginning with pre-Columbian populations, and traces the development of curanderismo over the past 500 years. He also examines the history and practice of psychiatry and the emergence of ethno-psychotherapy as well as psychiatry’s historic failure to incorporate culture in the treatment of the mental health of Hispanic populations. Dr. Zavaleta seeks to introduce curanderismo to psychiatry with the intention of incorporating its important aspects in the treatment of Hispanic mental health.

Psychiatric Diagnosis

Autor: Juan E. Mezzich , Yutaka Honda , Marianne C. Kastrup

Número de Páginas: 304

Advances in the standardization, precision and thoroughness of psychiatric diagnosis are being supplemented with attention to personalized or ideographic descriptive approaches. To reflect these developments, the Section on Classification, Diagnostic Assessment and Nomenclature of the World Psychiatric Association has prepared this volume which is organized around five prominent themes in contemporary psychiatric diagnosis: -major regional perspectives - ICD-10 - comprehensive diagnosis through the multiaxial model - treatment planning and organization of health services - the role and challenges of psychiatric diagnosis in primary health care.

Cultural Conceptions of Mental Health and Therapy

Cultural Conceptions of Mental Health and Therapy

Autor: Anthony J. Marsella , G. White

Número de Páginas: 412

Within the past two decades, there has been an increased interest in the study of culture and mental health relationships. This interest has extended across many academic and professional disciplines, including anthropology, psychology, sociology, psychiatry, public health and social work, and has resulted in many books and scientific papers emphasizing the role of sociocultural factors in the etiology, epidemiology, manifestation and treatment of mental disorders. It is now evident that sociocultural variables are inextricably linked to all aspects of both normal and abnormal human behavior. But, in spite of the massive accumulation of data regarding culture and mental health relationships, sociocultural factors have still not been incorporated into existing biological and psychological perspectives on mental disorder and therapy. Psychiatry, the Western medical specialty concerned with mental disorders, has for the most part continued to ignore socio-cultural factors in its theoretical and applied approaches to the problem. The major reason for this is psychiatry's continued commitment to a disease conception of mental disorder which assumes that mental disorders are largely...

Autor: Anna Wierzbicka

Número de Páginas: 305

Imprisoned in English argues that in the present English-dominated world, social sciences and the humanities are locked in a conceptual framework grounded in English and that scholars need to break away from this framework to reach a more universal, culture-independent perspective on things human.

Disability and Rehabilitation in Rural Jamaica

Disability and Rehabilitation in Rural Jamaica

Autor: Ronnie Linda Leavitt

Número de Páginas: 268

Although negative conditions exist, it appears that disabled children are not particularly stigmatized at the household level. Nevertheless, societal stigmatization and apathy do exist. As a result, disabled children are not being prepared to fully integrate into Jamaican society. 2. There is a range of variation of beliefs and behaviors with regard to disability and rehabilitation. The concept of intracultural diversity is supported. 3. This population has adapted their cultural belief systems and actual behaviors to match their material realities. That is, it would appear that people who have a disability, and their caretakers, have demonstrated "contextual accommodation." 4. Community based rehabilitation programs, based on the primary health care and community participation principles enumerated by the WHO are theoretically sound and practically attainable in Jamaica.
