To what extent do best-selling travel books, such as those by Paul Theroux, Bill Bryson, Bruce Chatwin and Michael Palin, tell us as much about world politics as newspaper articles, policy documents and press releases? Debbie Lisle argues that the formulations of genre, identity, geopolitics and history at work in contemporary travel writing are increasingly at odds with a cosmopolitan and multicultural world in which 'everybody travels'. Despite the forces of globalization, common stereotypes about 'foreignness' continue to shape the experience of modern travel. The Global Politics of Contemporary Travel Writing is concerned with the way contemporary travelogues engage with, and try to resolve, familiar struggles about global politics such as the protection of human rights, the promotion of democracy, the management of equality within multiculturalism and the reduction of inequality. This is a thoroughly interdisciplinary book that draws from international relations, literary theory, political theory, geography, anthropology and history.
In How to Preach, Samuel Wells goes beyond the arts and disciplines of preparing, crafting and delivering sermons, to explore preaching as an act of worship and prayer. Here, preachers will discover how being attentive to God, to Scripture, to the world, to their hearers, and to themselves can inform and shape their message. They will be renewed in joining the long tradition of witnessing to the revelation of God in every area of human experience. Preaching takes many forms and responds to many different needs and occasions. This broad-ranging volume considers: • the times in which we live: politics, society, freedom, disability and war • the seasons of the church year: Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, Ascension and Pentecost • the variety of biblical texts: Old Testament narratives and poetry, Gospel miracles and parables, the writings of Paul • life’s key moments: baptisms, weddings and funerals. For each topic, there is reflection on the demands and opportunities presented, ways of approach, sermon examples, and memorably wise and uncompromising practical guidelines that will nourish and inspire all who long to embrace the call to preach more faithfully.

Is there something taking place in our beloved country? It seems the respect for our government, society, and religious institutions are eroding. America is losing its influence and respect as a world leader. Many of our citizens believe our country is beyond saving from absolute destruction. They say we have crossed the threshold of no return. There are many reasons for these thoughts of doom, but one glaring observation stands out. Our citizens are not focused on fundamental family traditions, less government involvement in our lives and strong Christian ethics. There is a silent movement away from respecting the leaders of our government, communities and churches. Our minds are bombarded with thoughts from free thinkers who have no Christian values. Even the mindset of pastors is changing. This is alarming because the fate of our nation rests in the minds of its leaders! Dr. Ayers has opened my thinking to the possibility of a potential danger lurking within our churches and society a failure to respect those in authority. It was difficult for me to accept my role as a pastor in this assault of Satan upon us. I agree with Phil in his assessment that we need a revival! -A local...
What does it mean to be out walking in the world, whether in a landscape or a metropolis, on a pilgrimage or a protest march? In this first general history of walking, Rebecca Solnit draws together many histories to create a range of possibilities for this most basic act. Arguing that walking as history means walking for pleasure and for political, aesthetic, and social meaning, Solnit homes in on the walkers whose everyday and extreme acts have shaped our culture, from the peripatetic philosophers of ancient Greece to the poets of the Romantic Age, from the perambulations of the Surrealists to the ascents of mountaineers. With profiles of some of the most significant walkers in history and fiction - from Wordsworth to Gary Snyder, from Rousseau to Argentina's Mother of the Plaza de Mayo, from Jane Austen's Elizabeth Bennet to Andre Breton's Nadja - Wanderlust offers a provocative and profound examination of the interplay between the body, the imagination, and the world around the walker.
Whether you prefer a leisurely ramble through woods, a meandering city stroll, a blustery seaside promenade or a vigorous mountain hike, you’ll be enthralled by the stories, excerpts of classic writing, trivia and practical tips in this book – perfect for anyone who loves the freedom of lacing up their hiking boots and heading for the hills.
'If Ray Mears isn't a Great Living Englishman, then goodness me, who is? Ray is a persuader, pragmatist and populariser in the Durrell-Attenborough-Bellamy tradition.' - Robert Crampton, The Times Ray Mears is a household name through his television series Tracks, World of Survival, Bushcraft Survival, The Real Heroes of Telemark and many more. Just a year later, he had to face the death of his first wife Rachel. The book conveys the many sides of Ray Mears, taking us up to the present day - including the previously untold story ...

Tom Peters--brilliant, original, and perhaps the most inspiring and listened-to business thinker of our time--has a lot on his mind these days. And he wants to share it in The Circle of Innovation. The world of business is in a permanent state of flux, he argues, a state of chaos in which constant innovation is the only survival strategy--for the individual and for the organization. And he presents here a lifesaving handbook--both provocative and practical--designed to turn any organization into a perpetual innovation machine. In 400 seminars in 47 states and 22 countries in the last five years, Peters has reexamined, refined, and reinvented his views on innovation. Now he brings those seminars--and his passion--to the reader in a landmark book. It is meant, he writes, to both "terrify" and "enlighten." These are "times of matchless peril for those who fail to grasp the nettle...and times of matchless opportunity for those who do." To keep us alert, limber, and ready for action, he provokes and cajoles in chapter after chapter. Among his institutions and revelations: We Are All Michelangelos. He shows how to transform every "jobholder" into a full-fledged businessperson. All Value ...
Mike Viola’s work has universal appeal, having as its subject the daily events and situations that touch the lives of people everywhere. During his long career with The Philadelphia Inquirer, he met and conquered the challenge of every assignment. In this publications, twelve categories and approximately 350 photographs are presented to give the reader insight into the scope of Mike’s work. Even in what sometimes seemed like an “ordinary” assignment became the extraordinary front page photograph in the hands (and heart) of this master photographer. The photographs in this volume were taken by staff photographer Mike Viola for The Philadelphia Inquirer from 1964 to 1988. As they sipped their morning coffee, readers were accustomed to seeing the familiar byline under a photograph that, indeed needed no byline. Whatever the subject, there was no mistaken his inimitable style. Aside from their newsworthy content, Mike’s black and white prints are perfect studies in form, contrast, mood and balance. When he was just 13 and living in rural Brazos County, Texas, Mike received a small Kodak camera. He looked through its viewfinder and clicked the shutter, but had no idea the...
"The aim of this book is to interrogate the process whereby spatial relations are constituted as gendered, raced and classed within the colonial and imperial context." --introd.

Have you ever wondered who picked your Fairtrade banana or how far your green beans travelled to reach your plate? We are all part of a complex food system. Trying to make sense of it, environmental journalist Louise Gray tracks the stories of our five-a-day, from farm to fruit bowl, and discovers the impact that growing fruits and vegetables has on the planet. Visiting farms, interviewing scientists and trying to grow her own, she asks important questions to dig up the dirt on familiar items in our shopping baskets. Are plant proteins as good for us as meat proteins? Why can we buy so-called 'seasonal' fruits like strawberries all year round? And is the symbol of clean eating, the avocado, ...
Ask Maureen Stone when she started 'walking' and she will tell you with mild irritation, "Ever since I stopped crawling." But she is lying, she never crawled! She was a very sickly child who did not walk until she was almost three and then went on to walk the world. This is a book about travel that is not a travel book. It is a book about walking and hiking, but it is not about leisure. These activities provide the context within which the author examines and comments on issues in today's world. The approach is a provocative blend of the personal and the political, offering a different view of today's worldscape as seen through the eyes of a black woman sociologist, traveller and hiker. The result is a book which it will be difficult to put down. And which the reader will want to return to time and again. From Barbados to Bhutan, from Grenada to Guatemala, from Africa to Australia, China to Christchurch (Barbados and New Zealand) Maureen has been there, walking, observing, and listening. From the foothills of the Himalayas to the Old Man of Coniston she tells of encounters with men and women, and presents and discusses the issues and problems of today. In letters to her 'sisters...

The issue of truth has been one of the most constant, complex, and contentious in the cultural history of travel writing. Whether the travel was undertaken in the name of exploration, pilgrimage, science, inspiration, self-discovery, or a combination of these elements, questions of veracity and authenticity inevitably arise. Women, Travel, and Truth is a collection of twelve essays that explore the manifold ways in which travel and truth interact in women's travel writing. Essays range in date from Lady Mary Wortley Montagu in the eighteenth century to Jamaica Kincaid in the twenty-first, across such regions as India, Italy, Norway, Siberia, Austria, the Orient, the Caribbean, China and Mexico. Topics explored include blurred distinctions of fiction and non-fiction; travel writing and politics; subjectivity; displacement, and exile. Students and academics with interests in literary studies, history, geography, history of art, and modern languages will find this book an important reference.

In this inspiring new book, Lady Deborah Cassidi has approached an extraordinary range of people - men, women and children - and asked them to select just one person who is either a hero or heroine of theirs or an inspiring holy person. Each contribution consists of a quotation from the hero or holy person, a personal passage about what the person means to the author of the contribution and a potted biography. Rowan Williams chooses St Augustine, General Sir Mike Jackson The Duke of Wellington. Other contributors include The Chief Rabbi, Sir Roy Calne, Prince Charles and Vanessa Redgrave. The book is full of unexpected treasures which will come as a source of inspiration and encouragement.
