Investigating the post-WWI crisis in multicultural, urbane Fiume, she finds that the stories of empire’s cosmopolitans have been overwritten by the triumph of nationalism.
Drawing on novel archival evidence that sheds light on Anglo-Italian diplomatic relations and the French-Italian contest for power in the Adriatic, this book recounts the story of decadent poet Gabriele D'Annunzio's occupation of Fiume. Determining the fate of this Italian enclave in coastal Croatia had proved impossible at the Paris Peace Conference. In September 1919, D'Annunzio and his 'legionnaires' installed themselves in Fiume in a bid to embarrass Italy into declaring its annexation. In the months that followed, the poet did his best to fashion Fiume into his ideal political community, culminating in the proclamation of a Constitution known as the Carnaro Charter. The Charter was as visionary as it was short-lived: having reached an agreement with Yugoslavia on the status of Fiume, Italy put an end to the poet's socio-political experiment in December 1920. « Gabriele d’Annunzio et l’incident de Fiume » est une série d’articles d’Albert Londres publiés entre Mars 1919 et Janvier 1921. Ces articles, parus dans Le petit Parisien, puis dans L’Excelsior après que Londres se soit fait licencier du Petit Parisien sur ordre de Clémenceau, gravitent autour de la personnalité de Gabriele d’Annunzio, personnage hybride, rêveur et martial, poète célèbre et aviateur héros de la guerre, qui influencera Mussolini et les Fascistes, plaçant souvent D’Annunzio au mieux dans le camp des fous aux rêves dangereux, au pire parmi les Fascistes ou les pré-fascistes. C’est juste mais c’est réducteur. Ces articles nous permettent de comprendre la situation dramatique de l’Italie à la sortie de la Première guerre mondiale, la promesse (non tenue) faite à l’Italie par le camp des vainqueurs, la France et le Royaume-Uni, le ressentiment italien résultant dans une agitation sociale et politique intense, et dans un sursaut de nationalisme revendicateur. Albert Londres nous fait aussi découvrir le personnage de Gabriele d’Annunzio, son indignation face au sort des compatriotes de Fiume, et le « coup » de Fiume....
