Reel to Real Love

Autor: Elle E Ire

Número de Páginas: 273

2022 Goldie Award Finalist - Science Fiction/Fantasy Finding the right romantic partner is always a challenge—especially when your first spouse turns out to be a greedy, business-obsessed hardass who winds up on her CEO office floor with a bullet through her brain. After the murder of her first wife, Elaine is ready for a vacation and a solid relationship with a woman who only has time for her. Thanks to some found alien technology, Elaine can get what she wants... sort of. Okay, so a computer-generated tangible holographic image of a twentieth-century film star is about as far from "solid" as it gets. But as her themed pleasure cruise on a passenger starliner progresses and an additional plot to murder Elaine reveals itself, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to her fantasy companion. Ricky might be the result of exceptional programming, but she proves to be more than the sum of her particles. She shows Elaine more affection, and eventually more protection, than any so-called "real" woman in her life ever has, leaving Elaine to wonder—are Ricky's feelings for her truly artificial? Or is this REEL TO REAL LOVE?

This novel is about how that plan goes terribly wrong. The plan starts unraveling when three young people escape from a secret government laboratory. One makes it all the way to the Philippines. The other two do not even get out of the country. All three are young look-alikes of important public figures. The cover-up begins with a murder in Maryland. The ethereal crowds drew close at first, but the fires of making had not yet cooled upon the Earth, and in fear of the heat they drew back, all save seven. These were so entranced by the beauty they saw, they stepped without hesitation onto the Earth. They could not be burned, for they were still spirits without flesh, but God tied their immortal hearts to the heart of the Earth, and named them guardians of the Lesser World unto its ending. As long as they are there, close to the planet's heart, its life and continuation are said to be assured. Should they step away, the Lesser World becomes vulnerable. God help us, we stepped away.

Global Development, Ethics, and Epistemic Injustice

Global Development, Ethics, and Epistemic Injustice

Autor: Anna Malavisi

Número de Páginas: 233

Global Development, Ethics, and Epistemic Injustice: Rethinking Theory and Practice presents a critical analysis of global development from a perspective that is both theoretical and practical, addressing both ethical and epistemic issues. Offering a unique perspective from having worked as a practitioner in global development for several years, then left the practice to ponder the deep ethical issues that shadow global development, Anna Malavisi argues that one of the problems in global development today is the absence of an ethical analysis; ethics in development today is overshadowed by economic and political interests, as well as national self-interest. The book describes how Chagas diseases, as a Neglected Tropical Disease, continues to plague vulnerable populations in poorer countries such as Bolivia due to a very limited way in how it has been conceived, understood, and addressed. Malavisi offers a strong ethical approach, comprising a feminist methodology, a social ethical praxis, political responsibility, epistemic justice, and deep-green theory. A strong ethical approach is necessary to address Chagas Disease as well as other development problems in a more effective way.

The Last Great Quest

The Last Great Quest

Autor: Max Jones

Número de Páginas: 404

The story of Captain Scott's last Antarctic expedition is one of the greatest adventure stories ever told. Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Lieutenant Henry Bowers, Petty Officer Edgar Evans, Captain Lawrence Oates, and Dr Edward Wilson all died on the return trek from the South Pole, starved and frozen, only eleven miles from a supply camp. In November 1912, a rescue party discovered their last letters and diaries, which told a story of bravery, hardship, and self-sacrifice that shocked the world. Recent decades have seen controversy rage over whether Scott was the last of a line of great Victorian explorers, intent on discovering uncharted lands, or a hopeless incompetent driven by personal ambition. Rejecting the stereotypes, Max Jones reveals a complex figure, a product of the passions and preoccupations of an imperial age. He also shows how heroes are made and manipulated, through a close examination of the unprecedented outpouring of public grief at the news of the death of Scott.

Autor: Samantha Hartley

Número de Páginas: 611

Everyone has a battle in life that theyve had to face. For me, well, it wasnt something that a typical teenage girl had to deal with. My battle only got harder and 10 times more complicated when I met a Nixon. Then it got even worse when I met the rest of the Nixon clan. While I wouldnt say that my life was normal before I met William Nixon, I was actually trying to make it that way. I was trying to distance myself from what Id wrapped my whole life around. But one mistake one stupid decision to go back to the warehouse undid two years worth of hard work. Now I was back to where I started addicted, bloodied, crippled, and diseased. Only, I wasnt really. That would mean I was home and in reality I was the furthest thing from it. If I were home that would mean most things would be back to the way they were. But they werent. They couldnt be. There was only one thing that always seemed to stay the same. The place I could never escape. The place that drew me back time and time again. The warehouse. All I can say though is fighting only gets you...

The Art of Forgiveness

The Art of Forgiveness

Autor: Myk Habets , Philip Halstead

Número de Páginas: 318

Forgiveness is at the heart of the Christian Gospel. It goes hand in hand with love, mercy, and grace, the fundamental theological virtues. However, forgiveness is easier to define than it is to embody. This unique collection of essays brings together theologians, ethicists, and ministry practitioners into a constructive dialog which explores the complex and crucial concept of forgiveness: what it is, where it is to be found, and how it might be practiced. These essays reflect the perspectives of those from various traditions who nonetheless take the Christian Scriptures seriously, believe that forgiveness is central to living out the Gospel, and are creative in the ways in which forgiveness can be practiced. Forgiveness is an art and not simply a science; as such it requires trust, skill, and hope alongside love, mercy, and grace if it is to be embodied. This volume offers a unique window into the art of forgiveness and the faithful and innovative ways in which it is to be understood, embodied, and cultivated.

Pericles and the Conquest of History

Pericles and the Conquest of History

Autor: Loren J. Samons, Ii

Número de Páginas: 347

As the most famous and important political leader in Athenian history, Pericles has featured prominently in descriptions and analysis of Athenian democracy from antiquity to the present day. Although contemporary historians have tended to treat him as representative of values like liberty and equality, Loren J. Samons, II demonstrates that the quest to make Athens the preeminent power in Greece served as the central theme of Pericles' career. More nationalist than humanist and less rationalist than populist, Pericles' vision for Athens rested on the establishment of an Athenian reputation for military success and the citizens' willingness to sacrifice in the service of this goal. Despite his own aristocratic (if checkered) ancestry, Pericles offered the common and collective Athenian people the kind of fame previously available only to heroes and nobleman, a goal made all the more attractive because of the Athenians' defensiveness about Athens' lackluster early history.

From the winner of the 2012 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, a character-driven tale about our threatened environment and the practicality of putting contemporary revolutionary strategy into action. In The Minimum Security Chronicles, the latest long-form narrative from Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award–winning cartoonist Stephanie McMillan, lifelong friends Kranti and Bananabelle are rounded up during a protest and locked in a pen by a faraway railroad track. After their escape, when trying to gain proof of their capture, Kranti discovers the future site of a nuclear power plant. After attempting to shut it down, she learns of an even more ecologically dangerous enterprise: a massive geo-engineering project scheduled to begin in a matter of weeks. And so begins the tale of a group of friends—among them an apolitical computer programmer, an aspiring musician who joins the Occupy movement, a lovestruck community gardener, a militant bunny and a guinea pig theorist—who try to halt the plans of evil corporate overlords bent on destroying the earth for profit.
