The British Press, Public Opinion and the End of Empire in Africa

The British Press, Public Opinion and the End of Empire in Africa

Autor: Rosalind Coffey

Número de Páginas: 296

This book provides fresh insights into how the British press affected both British perceptions of decolonisation in Africa and British policy towards it during the ‘wind of change’ period. It also reveals, for the first time, the extent to which British newspaper coverage was of relevance to African and white settler readerships. British newspapers informed the political strategies and civic cultures of African activists, nationalists, liberal whites in Africa, the staunchest of white settler communities, and the first governments of independent African states and their opponents. The British press, British public opinion and British journalists became etched into the lived experiences of the end of empire affecting Anglo-African and Anglo-settler relations to this day. Arguing that the press cast a transnational web of influence over the decolonisation process in Africa, the author explores the relationships between the British, African and settler public and political spheres, and highlights the mediating power of the British press during the late 1950s. The book draws from a range of British newspapers, official government documents, newspaper archives, interviews, memoirs, ...

Handbook of Intelligent Computing and Optimization for Sustainable Development

Handbook of Intelligent Computing and Optimization for Sustainable Development

Autor: Mukhdeep Singh Manshahia , Valeriy Kharchenko , Elias Munapo , J. Joshua Thomas , Pandian Vasant

Número de Páginas: 948

HANDBOOK OF INTELLIGENT COMPUTING AND OPTIMIZATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT This book provides a comprehensive overview of the latest breakthroughs and recent progress in sustainable intelligent computing technologies, applications, and optimization techniques across various industries. Optimization has received enormous attention along with the rapidly increasing use of communication technology and the development of user-friendly software and artificial intelligence. In almost all human activities, there is a desire to deliver the highest possible results with the least amount of effort. Moreover, optimization is a very well-known area with a vast number of applications, from route finding problems to medical treatment, construction, finance, accounting, engineering, and maintenance schedules in plants. As far as optimization of real-world problems is concerned, understanding the nature of the problem and grouping it in a proper class may help the designer employ proper techniques which can solve the problem efficiently. Many intelligent optimization techniques can find optimal solutions without the use of objective function and are less prone to local conditions. The 41...

"Just some years before, there have been no throngs of Machine Learning, scientists developing intelligent merchandise and services at major corporations and startups. Once the youngest folks (the authors) entered the sector, machine learning didn’t command headlines in daily newspapers. Our oldsters had no plan what machine learning was, including why we would like it to a career in medication or law. Machine learning was an advanced tutorial discipline with a slender set of real-world applications. And people applications, e.g. speech recognition and pc vision, needed most domain data that they were usually thought to be separate areas entirely that machine learning was one tiny part. Neural networks, the antecedents of the deep learning models that we tend to specialize in during this book, were thought to be out-of-date tools. In simply the previous five years, deep learning has taken the world by surprise, using fast progress in fields as diverse as laptop vision, herbal language processing, computerized speech recognition, reinforcement learning, and statistical modelling. With these advances in hand, we can now construct cars that power themselves (with increasing...

Transforming Field and Service Operations

Transforming Field and Service Operations

Autor: Gilbert Owusu , Paul O’brien , John Mccall , Neil F. Doherty

Número de Páginas: 284

The drive to realise operational efficiencies, improve customer service, develop new markets and accelerate the introduction of new products has substantially increased the complexity of field service operations. To maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of these operations, organisations have embarked on a wide range of transformation programmes that have sought to introduce automation through the use of workforce management technologies. Despite the potential business value that can be provided by such transformation programmes, too often, the automation technologies have not been fully utilised and their expected benefits have as such not been realised. Scholars of organisation change argue that the success of any transformation programme is a function of how well the technical, political, structural and social aspects of a specific project have been managed. The objective of this edited book is to provide insights into how organisations might successfully transform their field service operations with the help of workforce management technologies. Accordingly, the book is organised into four sections: Section A “The Case for Transforming Service and Field Operations”...

Mathematical Analysis of Deterministic and Stochastic Problems in Complex Media Electromagnetics

Mathematical Analysis of Deterministic and Stochastic Problems in Complex Media Electromagnetics

Autor: G. F. Roach , I. G. Stratis , A. N. Yannacopoulos

Número de Páginas: 399

Electromagnetic complex media are artificial materials that affect the propagation of electromagnetic waves in surprising ways not usually seen in nature. Because of their wide range of important applications, these materials have been intensely studied over the past twenty-five years, mainly from the perspectives of physics and engineering. But a body of rigorous mathematical theory has also gradually developed, and this is the first book to present that theory. Designed for researchers and advanced graduate students in applied mathematics, electrical engineering, and physics, this book introduces the electromagnetics of complex media through a systematic, state-of-the-art account of their mathematical theory. The book combines the study of well posedness, homogenization, and controllability of Maxwell equations complemented with constitutive relations describing complex media. The book treats deterministic and stochastic problems both in the frequency and time domains. It also covers computational aspects and scattering problems, among other important topics. Detailed appendices make the book self-contained in terms of mathematical prerequisites, and accessible to engineers and...

Número de Páginas: 501

Science and art are increasingly interconnected in the activities of the study and conservation of works of art. Science plays a key role in cultural heritage, from developing new analytical techniques for studying the art, to investigating new ways of preserving the materials for the future. Following on from the 2014 title Science and Art: The Painted Surface, this book consists of a series of chapters written together by scientists, art historians, conservators, curators and artists dedicated to conservation, execution techniques, languages and conceptual topics. Science and Art: The Contemporary Painted Surface largely covers execution techniques, material’s conservation and languages of artists, representative of twelve different countries, all protagonists of the development of innovative significant techniques and methodologies. The book opens with a focus on widely historicized artists, such as Jackson Pollock, Lucio Fontana, Enrico Baj, Piero Manzoni and Joseph Albers. Its core is dedicated to the work of major worldwide renowned living artists, in a perspective that, while considering the Sixties as the historical starting point of contemporaneity, does not neglect to...
