The Insurgent’s Dilemma
Autor: David H. Ucko
Número de Páginas: 497
Despite attracting headlines and hype, insurgents rarely win. Even when they claim territory and threaten governmental writ, they typically face a military backlash too powerful to withstand. States struggle with addressing the political roots of such movements, and their military efforts mostly just ‘mow the grass’; yet, for the insurgent, the grass is nonetheless mowed–and the armed project must start over. This is the insurgent’s dilemma: the difficulty of asserting oneself, of violently challenging authority, and of establishing sustainable power. In the face of this dilemma, some insurgents are learning new ways to ply their trade. With subversion, spin and disinformation claiming centre stage, insurgency is being reinvented, to exploit the vulnerabilities of our times and gain new strategic salience for tomorrow. As the most promising approaches are refined and repurposed, what we think of as counterinsurgency will also need to change. The Insurgent’s Dilemma explores three particularly adaptive strategies and their implications for response. These emerging strategies target the state where it is weak and sap its power, sometimes without it noticing. There are...
Counterinsurgency Field Manual
Autor: The U.s. Army Marine Corps
Número de Páginas: 474
When the U.S. military invaded Iraq, it lacked a common understanding of the problems inherent in counterinsurgency campaigns. It had neither studied them, nor developed doctrine and tactics to deal with them. It is fair to say that in 2003, most Army officers knew more about the U.S. Civil War than they did about counterinsurgency. The U.S. Army / Marine Corps Counterinsurgency Field Manual was written to fill that void. The result of unprecedented collaboration among top U.S. military experts, scholars, and practitioners in the field, the manual espouses an approach to combat that emphasizes constant adaptation and learning, the importance of decentralized decision-making, the need to understand local politics and customs, and the key role of intelligence in winning the support of the population. The manual also emphasizes the paradoxical and often counterintuitive nature of counterinsurgency operations: sometimes the more you protect your forces, the less secure you are; sometimes the more force you use, the less effective it is; sometimes doing nothing is the best reaction. An new introduction by Sarah Sewall, director of the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at Harvard’s...

Eureka Stockade
Autor: Gregory Blake
Número de Páginas: 246
Eureka Stockade: A ferocious and bloody battle, is the epic account of the battle for the Eureka Stockade, an iconic moment in Australian history. On the chilly dawn morning of 3 December 1854 British soldiers and police of the Victorian colonial government attacked and stormed a crudely-built fortification erected by insurgent gold miners at the Eureka lead on the Ballarat Gold Diggings. The fighting was intense, the carnage appalling and the political consequences of the affair profound. This book, for the first time, examines in great detail the actual military events that unfolded during the twenty minutes of deadly fighting at Eureka.

Demonstrating how candidates and their campaigns affect the economic vote, this book provides a different way of understanding past elections - and predicting future ones. It offers a theory of campaigns that explains why electoral victory requires more than simply being the candidate favored by prevailing economic conditions.

Psychological Warfare in Political Campaigns
Autor: Kunal Deshpande
Número de Páginas: 189
"Psychological Warfare in Political Campaigns" explores the intricate world of political influence, focusing on psychological strategies used in both warfare and democratic processes. Tailored for a global audience, particularly readers in the United States, we provide a nuanced understanding of how psychological tactics shape public opinion and decision-making. We examine the foundational principles of psychological warfare, tracing its historical roots and contemporary applications. From ancient civilizations to modern conflicts, we illuminate the evolution and relevance of psychological tactics in shaping narratives and perceptions. Central to our discussion is the exploration of persuasion techniques deeply ingrained in political campaigning. Through an analysis of cognitive biases and persuasive communication strategies, we unveil the mechanisms behind effective messaging and voter mobilization. A significant portion of our book dissects propaganda techniques, particularly relevant in an era dominated by digital media and information warfare. We equip readers with tools to recognize and counter various forms of propaganda. We also delve into the role of social media in...
