Fallen into the Pit

Fallen into the Pit

Autor: Ellis Peters

Número de Páginas: 428

No case is too strange or too baffling for the policeman George Felse and his son, Dominic. Over 13 instalments and two decades, the Felse Investigations will take them from their home on the Welsh Borders to the southernmost tip of India. It is 1952, the shadow of World War Two still lies over the green fields of the small village of Comerford on the Welsh borders. When ex-prisoner of war Helmut Schauffler is murdered, local policeman Sergeant George Felse has his work cut out: Schauffler was Nazi to the core and the majority of the villagers had good reason to despise him. Sergeant Felse's fourteen-year-old son Dominic – who found Schauffler's body in a shallow brook – is fascinated by the case. Much to his father's disapproval, he resolves to find the murderer – a decision that places his own life in great danger... 'Highly recommended to those who still like a proper five-course whodunnit with all the trimmings' Sunday Times 'A cult figure of crime fiction' Financial Times 'Charm is not usual in murder mysteries, but Ellis Peters' stories are full of it' Mail on Sunday

The Pit

The Pit

Autor: Frank Norris

Número de Páginas: 348

Frank Norris'Äôs "The Pit" is a striking exploration of the ruthless dynamics of the grain trade in early 20th-century Chicago. Utilizing naturalistic literary techniques, Norris weaves a narrative that delves into the psychological and moral dilemmas faced by his characters, particularly examining the intersection of capitalism and human ambition. The novel reflects the tumultuous context of the Progressive Era, where the burgeoning industrial economy contrasted sharply with personal ethics, highlighting the corrupting influence of wealth and greed. Through vivid prose and intense character development, Norris captures the relentless drive for success that ultimately entraps his protagonists. Frank Norris (1870-1902) was a pivotal figure in American literature, known for his ambition to bring realism and naturalism into the American consciousness. Influenced by the works of Emile Zola and the social concerns of his time, Norris's educational journey in literature and journalism culminated in his impassioned desire to critique the forces that shape human experience. "The Pit" serves as a culmination of his insights into economic struggle, encapsulating the ideological conflicts...

The Talmud

The Talmud

Autor: Jacob Neusner

Número de Páginas: 177

Wherever Jews have settled and whatever languages they spoke, they created a community with a single set of common values. One law, one theology defined the community throughout their many migrations. A single book explains how this came about-the Talmud. By re-framing the Torah through sustained argument and analysis, the Talmud encourages the reader to actively apply reason and practice logic. Renowned scholar Jacob Neusner introduces readers to the Talmud, defining it, explaining its historical context, and illustrating why it remains relevant today. Neusner's The Talmud: What It Is and What It Says invites readers to engage with the text, and emphasizes that the Talmud will continue to be an important cultural guidebook for Jewish life through the next millennium.

Three-dimensional structure of wood

Three-dimensional structure of wood

Autor: B. Butterfield

Número de Páginas: 103

Nine years ago saw the publication of the first version of Three-dimensional Structure of Wood: A scanning electron microscope study [95]. This book contained 59 scanning electron micrographs and a modest text outlining the basic structure of wood_ When we wrote it in 1970, the scanning electron microscope was still something of a novelty (the first commercially produced SEM only coming on the market in 1965) and its use as an instrument in serious wood research was still treated by many with a good deal of suspicion. Such suspicions were not without foundation for indeed the first Three-dimensional Structure of Wood was put together from a somewhat paltry collection of a few hundred scanning electron micrographs of wood taken over a two year period. The last decade has seen some remarkable developments in the general understanding of the structure of wood. Our personal collection of scanning electron micrographs has grown from a few hundred to some 16 000. Techniques for specimen preparation [46, 47], particularly in the areas of dehydration [36] and coating have greatly improved. Most significant however, has been the new depth of understanding of wood ultrastructure that has...

Guidelines for Evaluating Water in Pit Slope Stability

Guidelines for Evaluating Water in Pit Slope Stability

Autor: Geoff Beale , John Read

Número de Páginas: 615

Guidelines for Evaluating Water in Pit Slope Stability is a comprehensive account of the hydrogeological procedures that should be followed when performing open pit slope stability design studies. Created as an outcome of the Large Open Pit (LOP) project, an international research and technology transfer project on the stability of rock slopes in open pit mines, this book expands on the hydrogeological model chapter in the LOP project's previous book Guidelines for Open Pit Slope Design (Read & Stacey, 2009; CSIRO PUBLISHING). The book comprises six sections which outline the latest technology and best practice procedures for hydrogeological investigations. The sections cover: the framework used to assess the effect of water in slope stability; how water pressures are measured and tested in the field; how a conceptual hydrogeological model is prepared; how water pressures are modelled numerically; how slope depressurisation systems are implemented; and how the performance of a slope depressurisation program is monitored and reconciled with the design. Guidelines for Evaluating Water in Pit Slope Stability offers slope design practitioners a road map that will help them decide how...

Monumentality in Later Prehistory

Monumentality in Later Prehistory

Autor: Harold Mytum

Número de Páginas: 334

This volume provides the results of a 30-year excavation, reconstruction, and public interpretation campaign at the late prehistoric inland promontory settlement of Castell Henllys, here focusing on the defensive sequence and the role of monumentality in later prehistory. The site has international significance because of the extensive excavations of the Iron Age palisaded settlement and later earthen ramparts, complex gateway, and chevaux-de-frise of upright stones. It is now widely recognised that the Iron Age consisted of many regional cultural traditions, and the excavations at Castell Henllys provide a vital contrast to the well-known large hillfort communities in other parts of England and Wales as well as across Europe. As such, it is a unique window into a widespread but largely ignored site category and form of social and economic organisation. The publication will provide a case study for the construction and use of the earthworks of a major European late prehistoric settlement type – the Iron Age hillfort; the monumental construction is compared with other communal investments such as the Mississippian mounds. It will also offer an innovative form of site reporting,...

Yavneh

Yavneh

Autor: Raz Kletter , Irit Ziffer , Wolfgang Zwickel

Número de Páginas: 504

In the words of late Professor Moshe Kochavi, the Philistine repository pit at Yavneh is the kind of discovery made only once every fifty years. It is the richest repository pit ever found from Bronze and Iron Ages Israel/Palestine, containing thousands of cultic finds originating from a temple, including an unprecedented number - more than a hundred - of cult stands (so-called 'architectural models') carrying rich figurative art, dozens of fire-pans, chalices and other objects. The present volume includes the full publication of the excavation, the stratigraphy, the cult stands and the figures detached from cult stands, several clay and stone altars and some pottery vessels related to burning of plant material, most likely incense. This exceptional book raises a host of highly important and intriguing questions. Is this a favissa, or even a genizah? Why are many cult stands badly broken, while some are intact - were cult stands broken on purpose? What is the explanation for the unique stratigraphy and for the layer of gray ash in the pit - was fire kindled inside as part of a ritual? How do we know that these finds are Philistine? Are they part of the 'furniture' of the temple or ...
