Israel's Way of War
Autor: Ehud Eilam
Número de Páginas: 209
Israel has fought many wars since its founding in 1948, from conventional military conflicts with Arab forces to irregular clashes with guerrilla and terror groups. A study of these confrontations reveals strategic and military patterns. Written by a former member of the Israel Defense Forces, this book compares the wars fought in Lebanon against the Palestine Liberation Organization (1982) and against Hezbollah (2006), and in the Gaza Strip (1956, 1967, 2008-2009 and 2014). The author draws similarities between Israel and Western nations--mainly the United States and Britain--in their waging of conventional and irregular warfare, and offers a comparison of the Vietnam War to Israel's struggle with Hezbollah in the 1990s.
Israel's Past in Present Research
Autor: V. Philips Long
Número de Páginas: 633
The debate over history, history-writing, and the scientific study of history is reaching an apex in the late twentieth century and shows no signs of abating in the near future. The literature on the topic is prodigious. The time is thus ripe for an anthology of essays of the sort that Professor Long has collected, essays that trace the history of the issues that have fed into the debate. The classic and contemporary essays presented here provide an overview and introduction to the topic, bringing together the most essential of these in a handy compilation. The book is organized in six sections: (1) The State of Old Testament Historiography (2) Ancient Near Eastern Historiography (3) Ancient Israelite Historiography (4) Method in the Study of Ancient Israelite Historiography (5) The Historical Impulse in the Old Testament (6) The Future of Israel’s Past Long’s goal is to provide a context for Israelite history-writing within the milieu of the ancient Near East, expose the methodologies and assumptions of various approaches and perspectives on historiography, and provide access to essays that examine the contribution of the Hebrew Scriptures themselves to the origins of...
Israel's Public Diplomacy
Autor: Jonathan Cummings
Número de Páginas: 219
Hasbara (explaining), the Israeli variant of public diplomacy, is the subject of endless domestic debate. Israel in the 1960s and 1970s saw many changes in its political and military international stage. This was a period of unusually intensive attention to the problems of hasbara, beginning with the appointment of Yisrael Galili as minister with responsibility for government communications and ending with the dismantling of the Ministry of Information in 1974, less than a year after it had been created. Israel had only been able to “muddle through,” and, at the end, there was no greater sophistication in Israeli thinking and no stronger administrative structure in spite of many organizational changes. Accessible to anyone interested in the history of Israel as well as political history and diplomacy, the book serves as a case study of how entrenched political culture can limit policy options and casts light on the emergence of public diplomacy as a feature of foreign policy.
The Triumph of Israel's Radical Right
Autor: Ami Pedahzur
Número de Páginas: 296
Two decades ago, the idea that a "radical right" could capture and drive Israeli politics seemed highly improbable. While it was a boisterous faction and received heavy media coverage, it constituted a fringe element. Yet by 2009, Israel's radical right had not only entrenched itself in mainstream Israeli politics, it was dictating policy in a wide range of areas. The government has essentially caved to the settlers on the West Bank, and restrictions on non-Jews in Israel have increased in the past few years. Members of the radical right have assumed prominent positions in Israel's elite security forces. The possibility of a two state solution seems more remote than ever, and the emergence of ethnonationalist politician Avigdor Lieberman suggests that its power is increasing. Quite simply, if we want to understand the seemingly intractable situation in Israel today, we need a comprehensive account of the radical right. In The Triumph of Israel's Radical Right, acclaimed scholar Ami Pedahzur provides an invaluable and authoritative analysis of its ascendance to the heights of Israeli politics. After analyzing what, exactly, they believe in, he explains how mainstream Israeli...

The Identity of Israel’s God in Christian Scripture
Autor: Don Collett , Mark Elliott , Mark Gignilliat , Ephraim Radner
Número de Páginas: 501
A broad, sweeping volume that breaches the walls separating biblical and theological disciplines Biblical scholars and theologians engage an important question: Who is Israel’s God for Christian readers of the Old Testament? For Christians, Scripture is the Old and New Testament bound together in a single legacy. Contributors approach the question from multiple disciplinary vantage points. Essays on both Testaments focus on figural exegesis, critical exegesis, and the value of diachronic understandings of the Old Testament’s compositional history for the sake of a richer synchronic reading. This collection is offered in celebration of the life and work of Christopher R. Seitz. His rich and wide-ranging scholarly efforts have provided scholars and students alike a treasure trove of resources related to this critical question.
Shield of David: The Story of Israel’s Armed Forces
Autor: Yigal Allon
Número de Páginas: 376
Shield of David tells the history of the Jews’ armed forces from the Palestine Yishuv’s first efforts at self-defense in the early 1900s, under the Ottoman Empire and the British Mandate, during Israel’s 1948 War of Independence, the 1956 Suez Campaign and until the 1967 Six-Day War. “In recent years, most particularly since the Six-Day War of June 1967, people throughout the world have asked themselves how it happened that the Israel Defence Forces won so resounding a victory over the Arab armies. What suddenly endowed the Jewish people — traditionally non-martial — with such impressive military skills? What is the secret of the prowess of Israeli soldiers, airmen and sailors? The answer, of course, is that nothing happens ‘suddenly’; that the modern story of Jewish self-defence in the Land of Israel dates back some eighty years, and is the result of the commitment and dedication to national survival of many men and women — most of whom, seeking no publicity, received none. This book is my attempt to tell part of that little-known story — as simply, briefly and clearly as possible.” — Yigal Allon, Author’s Note, 1970
Israel's Crossing
Autor: F. C. Hansen
Número de Páginas: 132
Will Israel after promises delivered some four thousand years ago come together where the Messiah again speak to His people'. The temple remains to be build and the priestly garments find their place in the temple. My writing this book is to open towards the teaching that God has given us the Messiah, Yeshua is about to return to deliver on the promise delivered by the prophets. Israel's Crossing will provide with facts in History and bring Old and New covenant scripture where Jews and Gentiles cross the land to receive their Yeshua as their Messiah. Every believer should enhance their personal position on the word given first to the Jew and then to the Gentile. Author F.C. Hansen speak with rabbis and get their input on the importance of spiritual heritage based on covenants established more than four thousand years ago, these discussions together with Christian literature englobe a rich feature set where the Land on the other side represents purification from sin that will enable Jews to cross from an Old and perishable Covenant to a New and lasting Covenant.
