Thinking and Speaking in Two Languages

Thinking and Speaking in Two Languages

Autor: Aneta Pavlenko

Número de Páginas: 269

Until recently, the history of debates about language and thought has been a history of thinking of language in the singular. The purpose of this volume is to reverse this trend and to begin unlocking the mysteries surrounding thinking and speaking in bi- and multilingual speakers. If languages influence the way we think, what happens to those who speak more than one language? And if they do not, how can we explain the difficulties second language learners experience in mapping new words and structures onto real-world referents? The contributors to this volume put forth a novel approach to second language learning, presenting it as a process that involves conceptual development and restructuring, and not simply the mapping of new forms onto pre-existing meanings.

Linguistic Relativity in SLA

Linguistic Relativity in SLA

Autor: Zhaohong Han , Teresa Cadierno

Número de Páginas: 231

Crosslinguistic influence is an established area of second language research, and as such, it has been subject to extensive scrutiny. Although the field has come a long way in understanding its general character, many issues still remain a conundrum, for example, why does transfer appear selective, and why does transfer never seem to go away for certain linguistic elements? Unlike most existing studies, which have focused on transfer at the surface form level, the present volume examines the relationship between thought and language, in particular thought as shaped by first language development and use, and its interaction with second language use. The chapters in this collection conceptually explore and empirically investigate the relevance of Slobin’s Thinking-for-Speaking Hypothesis to adult second language acquisition, offering compelling and enlightening evidence of the fundamental nature of crosslinguistic influence in adult second language acquisition.

Classroom-oriented Research

Classroom-oriented Research

Autor: Mirosław Pawlak , Jakub Bielak , Anna Mystkowska-wiertelak

Número de Páginas: 307

The volume brings together papers related to different aspects of classroom-oriented research on teaching and learning second and foreign languages that have been authored by specialists from Poland and abroad. The first part contains contributions dealing with individual variation in the language classroom, in particular age, anxiety, beliefs and language learning strategies. The second part deals with various facets of teachers’ behaviors in the classroom, focusing in particular on classroom communication and the use of action research in teacher training. The third part includes papers devoted to various instructional practices, such as the use of new technologies, the development of intercultural competence, assessment or combining content and language. Finally, the last part deals with issues involved in research methodology, with special emphasis being placed on the use of diaries, observations, mixed methods research as well as triangulation.

Understanding Second Language Acquisition 2nd Edition

Understanding Second Language Acquisition 2nd Edition

Autor: Rod Ellis

Número de Páginas: 388

In the 30 years since Rod Ellis first published the award-winning Understanding Second Language Acquisition, it has become a classic text. This new, fully updated edition continues to provide an authoritative and highly readable introduction to key areas of theory and research in second language acquisition. Ellis presents a comprehensive overview of the different theories in this field and examines critical reactions to them. The book reflects recent trends in looking at cognitive and social aspects of second language acquisition, as well as examining the roles played by implicit and explicit instruction in language learning. “An excellent and much-needed, in-depth review of the research on how children and literate adults learn a second language. Ellis provides a sound knowledge base for language teachers and beginning graduate students in applied linguistics, focusing on relevant findings of research on second-language learning by children and literate adults in both naturalistic and instructed contexts.” Elaine Tarone, Director of the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition, University of Minnesota Additional online resources are available at...

Morphological Decomposition in Arabic

Morphological Decomposition in Arabic

Autor: Mousa Qasem

Número de Páginas: 350

Traditional theories of Semitic morphology hold that two abstract morphemic units, the root (E.G., "k-t-b") and the word pattern (E.G., "--I-aa-"), are the basis for word formation (E.G., "kitaab" [book]). Previous lexical processing studies in Hebrew and Arabic have confirmed the independent morphemic status of these two units, and the root in particular, whose existence was disputed under word-based theories. To further this line of investigation, the current study asks: (1) Is root priming in Arabic caused by form and semantic overlap or is it independent of these two factors? (2) Does the Arabic lexicon impose linearity constraints on the root consonants? (3) Does higher proficiency in a second language (English) have any consequences for lexical organization and processing in the first language (Arabic) of bilingual speakers? In addressing these research questions (RQs), a masked priming experiment was designed using a within-target design. To get at rq1, the priming effects between same- root word pairs with both decreased semantic and form overlap were compared to the priming between orthographic minimal pairs. With respect to positional coding constraints (rq2), this study ...

Hungarian-English Linguistic Contrasts

Hungarian-English Linguistic Contrasts

Autor: Pal Heltai

Número de Páginas: 285

There is no denying that linguistic contrasts between languages can have an impact on the learning of foreign languages, and there is no doubt that an awareness of the differences between the mother tongue (L1) and the foreign or second language being learnt (L2) can help learners to acquire the L2. The aim of this book is to acquaint Hungarian students of English with some of the linguistic contrasts between English and Hungarian that may affect their own and their future students' learning of English. The author, Pál Heltai, provides a summary of the most important principles and concepts proposed by classical contrastive analysis, highlighting those that have retained their relevance for foreign language teaching over the years and presents an overview of the most important contrasts between English and Hungarian at the level of– phonetics, syntax, lexicology, pragmatics and translation. Most chapters consist of a theoretical introduction complemented by illustrative texts with example sentences and translations. The book provides a good opportunity for students to recapitulate or supplement some of the material covered earlier in their linguistics courses at university and...

Crosslinguistic Approaches to the Psychology of Language

Crosslinguistic Approaches to the Psychology of Language

Autor: Jiansheng Guo , Elena Lieven , Nancy Budwig , Susan Ervin-tripp , Keiko Nakamura , Seyda Ozcaliskan

Número de Páginas: 617

This volume covers state-of-the-art research in the field of crosslinguistic approaches to the psychology of language. The forty chapters cover a wide range of topics that represent the many research interests of a pioneer, Dan Isaac Slobin, who has been a major intellectual and creative force in the field of child language development, linguistics, and psycholinguistics for the past four decades. Slobin has insisted on a rigorous, crosslinguistic approach in his attempt to identify universal developmental patterns in language learning, to explore the effects of particular types of languages on psycholinguistic processes, to determine the extent to which universals of language and language behavior are determined by modality (vocal/auditory vs. manual/visual) and, finally, to investigate the relation between linguistic and cognitive processes. In this volume, researchers take up the challenge of the differences between languages to forward research in four major areas with which Slobin has been concerned throughout his career: language learning in crosslinguistic perspective (spoken and sign languages); the integration of language specific factors in narrative skill; theoretical...
