La Psicología del Aprendizaje Humano ha vivido desde sus orígenes una profunda escisión tanto teórica como en sus ámbitos de intervención. Por un lado ha habido una tradición cercana al conductismo que ha entendido el aprendizaje como un proceso de detección de regularidades en el ambiente por medio de procesos asociativos y que por tanto ha diseñado la intervención psicológica mediante técnicas para modificar los sucesos a los que las personas se enfrentan así como las respuestas asociadas a dichos sucesos. Pero desde otra perspectiva, más cercana al constructivismo, se ha concebido el aprendizaje en términos de los procesos cognitivos que median en el significado que las personas atribuyen a esos sucesos y a esas conductas, de forma que intervenir es cambiar cómo las personas se representan el mundo y su propia identidad en él.
