Kama Muta

Kama Muta

Autor: Alan Page Fiske

Número de Páginas: 288

This book describes a ubiquitous and potent emotion that has only rarely and recently been studied in any systematic manner. The words that come closest to denoting it in English are being moved or touched, having a heart-warming feeling, feeling nostalgic, feeling patriotic, or pride in family or team. In religious contexts when the emotion is intense, it may be labeled ecstasy, mystical rapture, burning in the bosom, or being touched by the Spirit. All of these are instances of what scientists now call ‘kama muta’ (Sanskrit, ‘moved by love’). Alan Page Fiske shows that what evokes this emotion is the sudden creation, intensification, renewal, repair, or recall of a communal sharing relationship – when love ignites, or people feel newly connected. He explains the social, psychological, cultural, and likely evolutionary processes involved – and how they interlock. Kama muta is described as it manifests in diverse settings at many points in history across scores of cultures, in everyday experiences as well as the peak moments of life. The chapters illuminate the occurrence of kama muta in a range of contexts, including religion, oratory, literature, sport, social media, ...

KAMA SUTRA

KAMA SUTRA

Autor: Richard Francis Burton

Número de Páginas: 194

In Richard Francis Burton's compelling translation of the ancient Indian text "Kama Sutra," the intricate interweaving of sexual philosophy, art, and pleasure is meticulously presented. This seminal work, originally composed by Vātsyāyana, transcends its reputation as merely a manual on sexual practices, delving into the broader themes of love, aesthetics, and ethical living in the pursuit of pleasure. Burton's literary style is marked by his rich language and keen observations, evoking the cultural context of 19th-century Victorian society, where discussions of sexuality were often shrouded in taboo, yet he boldly sought to illuminate and demystify these age-old teachings. Burton, a renowned explorer, linguist, and anthropologist, was driven by an insatiable curiosity about diverse cultures and their customs. His extensive travels through the East, combined with his expertise in linguistics, provided him with a unique vantage point to approach the "Kama Sutra" with both reverence and scholarly rigor. His goal was to create an accurate and respectful translation that would captivate the Western audience while preserving the essence of the original text. Recommended for scholars, ...

"Man should study the Kama Sutra and the arts and sciences subordinate thereto, in addition to the study of the arts and sciences contained in Dharma and Artha. The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana

The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana

Autor: Vatsyayana

Número de Páginas: 221

The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana Vatsyayana - The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana by Richard Francis Burton is an edition of the ancient Indian text on sexuality and emotional needs. Vatsayana was an ancient Indian philosopher who lived during the second or third century. Although it is often thought of as a sex manual, it is much more, with guides on living well, the nature of love, and finding a partner. Indeed, Vatsyayana says himself: 'This work is not to be used merely as an instrument for satisfying our desires'. Burton did not in fact translate the Kama Sutra - it was translated by the Indian scholar Bhagwan Lal Indraji. It was edited by Burton to suit prevailing British attitudes to sex, but was still banned in England and the United States until 1962. Other criticisms levelled at Burton's translation is that instead of using English words for the sex organs, he uses the words 'lingam' and 'yoni', despite those words not appearing in the original work. This was seen as an attempt to distance them and make them 'other', rather than about English people's sexual organs. He also removes the agency of women, and where in the original, women's words are direct quotes, in the Burton...
