The Economy of Kent, 1640-1914

The Economy of Kent, 1640-1914

Autor: Alan Armstrong

Número de Páginas: 366

In recent years, historians' interpretations of the economic history of Britain from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century have changed significantly. There is less emphasis on the idea of a cataclysmic industrial revolution' pioneered in and confined to the northern and midland counties, with increasing amounts of attention devoted to the long-neglected economic history of the southern counties. The Economy of Kent, 1640-1914is the first authoritative survey of the topic. Subjectsconsidered include the population of Kent, its growth, mobility and distribution; agriculture; industry; transport; labour; and the importance of the sea to Kent. Its findings suggest that Kent retained its place as an important constituent of the expanding British economy throughout the period, and that, by its steady economic progress, it avoided many of the strains and stresses experienced by counties more directly touched by industrialisation, along with the painful processes of readjustment that other regions have faced more recently. ALAN ARMSTRONG is Professor of Economic and Social History at Kent University. The contributors are: MARY DOBSON, ALAN ARMSTRONG, GORDON MINGAY, DAVID ORMROD, JAMES ...

Kent Gibson knows the anatomy of scars. As a celebrated plastic surgeon, he knows that some scars are skin deep, while some are embedded in our souls. Since losing his wife ten years ago, Kent has filled the void in his life by playing a Dominant Master at Club Wicked Cove. Life is good; he’s got the looks and money’s aplenty, good friends and subs galore. What more could he ask for? Sharon Watts has lived through sheer hell and survived to tell the tale. She carries her scars like a roadmap of her torturous past. Try as she might, she can’t jerk off the baggage of her nightmarish experience. Until, an impromptu scene with Kent brings her back to life. As soon as he touches Sharon, Kent knows he’s in for it. When through a twist of fate, Kent wins Sharon as his slave in an auction, it’s time to throw caution to the winds and take a leap of faith. As a healer, Kent knows he has the most exquisitely fragile woman in his hands who needs careful mending, inside and out. She is gorgeous to him and makes his blood boil with a mere look. Prince Edward, Duke of Kent

Prince Edward, Duke of Kent

Autor: Nathan Tidridge

Número de Páginas: 287

The story of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, is the story of early Canada. The story of Prince Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent (1767-1820) is also a story of early Canada. An active participant in the very genesis of the country, including discussions that would eventually lead to Confederation, the Prince lived in Quebec City, undertook historic tours of Upper Canada and the United States (both firsts for a member of the Royal Family) before he was stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as commander-in-chief of British North America. Canada’s maps are dotted with his name (Prince Edward Island the most obvious example), making him one of the most honoured among our forgotten historical figures. Exiled from the court of his father, and accompanied by his long-time mistress Julie de St. Laurent, the 24-year-old Prince Edward Augustus arrived in Quebec City in 1791. His life became woven into the fabric of a highly-charged society and left an indelible mark on the role of the monarchy in Canada. Seventy years later the country would be united under the crown of his daughter, Victoria, Sir John A. Macdonald’s "Queen of Canada."

The Little History of Kent

The Little History of Kent

Autor: Susan Mcgowan , Susan Hibberd

Número de Páginas: 167

Kent has been the gateway to Britain since prehistoric man first set foot on our soil. Its people have repelled invaders including Julius Caesar, the Vikings and William the Conqueror, while welcoming migrants from countries such as France, Austria and the Netherlands. In turn, men from Kent played a part in invading and conquering such faraway places as Canada and the USA, leaving their stamp on the world at large. This volume is a tribute to those who have shaped our society and the world around us: from the long barrow at Trottescliffe and the medieval abbey of St Augustine to the Channel Tunnel and Bluewater Shopping Centre, it is plain to see that the landscape around us is itself a monument to those who went before.

This report investigates the completed merger of Clifford Kent Holdings Ltd, parent company of Stonegate Farmers Ltd, and Deans Food Group Ltd, through Noble Foods Ltd. Through the merger, Noble Foods gained control of 60 to 70 percent of the supply of shell eggs to retailers and over half of the supply of liquid eggs. This inquiry by the Competition Commission finds that the merger has led to a substantial lessening of competition and that the most practicable remedy is the divestiture of Stonegate.

Número de Páginas: 128

After spending time in Ireland, Kent Ashton has returned to America. It’s his chance at a new start, and he’s determined to go all the way to California–far away from his past and the list of regrets he’s left behind. But while in Omaha, Nebraska, thieves rob him and leave him for dead in an alley. That’s when Dave Larson finds him and brings him home so he can recover. As soon as Kent is better, he plans to continue his journey to California. But Dave’s daughter, Rose Larson, has other plans. She’s bound and determined to make him her husband. Sure, he might protest, claim he’s not the right one for her, that she’s better off with someone else. But she’s not one to give up, and if she has to chase him to get him to the altar, then so be it. Author’s Note: Kent Ashton was the villain in Falling In Love With Her Husband. He was also the main character in Kent Ashton's Backstory which tells his version of events during Falling In Love With Her Husband.

Black Glasses Like Clark Kent

Black Glasses Like Clark Kent

Autor: Terese Svoboda

Número de Páginas: 252

After her Uncle's suicide, Terese Svoboda investigates his stunning claim that MPs may have executed their own men during the occupation of Japan after World war II [Our captain] commended us for being good soldiers and doing our job well and having a minimum of problems. Then he dropped a bomb. He said the prison was getting overcrowded, terribly overcrowded. As a child Terese Svoboda thought of her uncle as Superman, with "Black Clark Kent glasses, grapefruit-sized biceps." At eighty, he could still boast a washboard stomach, but in March 2004, he became seriously depressed. Svoboda investigates his terrifying story of what happened during his time as an MP, interviewing dozens of elderly ex-GIs and visiting Japan to try to discover the truth. In Black Glasses Like Clark Kent, winner of the Graywolf Nonfiction Prize, Svoboda offers a striking and carefully wrought personal account of an often painful search for information. She intersperses excerpts of her uncle's recordings and letters to his wife with her own research, and shows how the vagaries of military justice can allow the worst to happen and then be buried by time and protocol
