The Irish Attack on Christianity - The Case for the Defence

The Irish Attack on Christianity - The Case for the Defence

Autor: Eugene Jordan

Número de Páginas: 330

During the biggest scandal ever in Irish history, feminists attacked women, the Irish attacked the Irish, the politicians attacked the electorate, and all sides attacked Christianity. They accused Christian women of killing hundreds of babies and of perpetrating a holocaust. The allegations are not true, but many people believe them despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Why should the Irish nation have behaved in such a way? What purpose was served in falsely scapegoating religious women? Why did they attack their mothers, grandmothers, and all their relations, accusing them of the full gamut of reprehensible behaviour from ignorance to holding ‘a perverse religious morality’. The reality is that these women were like stars in the sky; they deserve to shine. The real story needs to be told. The Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes has dismissed many of the scandal propagators’ notorious claims but has made several significant errors of their own. However, the Irish media continues cherry-pick from its findings to perpetuate many of their previously created myths. For the first time, this book exposes the 21st century Irish mindset, revealing...

Southern Ireland and the Liberation of France

Autor: Gerald Morgan , Gavin Hughes

Número de Páginas: 258

The Humanitarians

The Humanitarians

Autor: Joy Damousi

Número de Páginas: 363

Spanning six decades from the formation of the Save the Children Fund in 1919 to humanitarian interventions during the Vietnam War, The Humanitarians maps the national and international humanitarian efforts undertaken by Australians on behalf of child refugees. In this longitudinal study, Joy Damousi explores the shifting forms of humanitarian activity related to war refugee children over the twentieth century, from child sponsorship, the establishment of orphanages, fundraising, to aid and development schemes and campaigns for inter-country adoption. Framed by conceptualisations of the history of emotions, and the limits and possibilities afforded by empathy and compassion, she considers the vital role of women and includes studies of unknown, but significant, women humanitarian workers and their often-traumatic experience of international humanitarian work. Through an examination of the intersection between racial politics and war refugees, Damousi advances our understanding of humanitarianism over the twentieth century as a deeply racialised and multi-layered practice.

Once Upon a Time in the West

Once Upon a Time in the West

Autor: Lorna Siggins

Número de Páginas: 458

'All I want is to stay where I am . . . My heart and soul are in this place.' (Willie Corduff, one of The Rossport Five) In a remote, beautiful part of the west of Ireland, a David and Goliath struggle rages between multinational oil company, Shell, and some of the local community of Rossport, County Mayo. In 1996, Enterprise Oil, subsequently bought by Shell, found a major source of valuable gas offshore in the Corrib gas field. In the attempt to build an onshore pipeline and refinery the oil giant has come into conflict with a small group of locals who, anxious about the safety of their families, the environmental impact of the project and the future of their community, are resisting Shell's plans. The eyes of the nation fell on this tiny community when, in 2005, five of the residents were jailed for refusing to allow Shell onto their land, in contempt of court orders. These men have become known as The Rossport Five. Irish Times correspondent Lorna Siggins has been covering the controversy from the beginning. No one is better placed to unravel the twists and turns of this fascinating human drama and its political, cultural and environmental shockwaves. In a new Ireland where...

How Will Climate Change Affect You? Climate change is the biggest threat to the world today. Rising temperatures and shifting weather patterns are already creating havoc in parts of the world. The issue has been hotly debated by experts and policy-makers; it is now widely accepted that human activity has played a crucial part in climate change. Nobody now denies the urgency of the situation. But how will climate change affect Ireland? What do we know about climate change? What is happening now? What will happen in the future, and what can we do about it? RTÉ’s Environment Correspondent Paul Cunningham takes us on a tour of Ireland, meeting people whose lives and livelihoods have already been affected or will be affected in the future – farmers whose lands have been flooded and who find their crops threatened by unseasonal weather; coastal residents whose homes are in danger of collapsing into the sea; and ordinary parents whose children will bear the cost of our actions today. He also speaks to Ireland’s leading weather and climate experts and campaigners, who paint a realistic picture of what lies in store for us over the coming decades; businesses whose responsibility for ...

The complex true-crime story of a Connecticut lawyer who had her brother-in-law killed, by the New York Times bestselling author of Perfect Poison. On a cold spring night in 1994, passing motorists discovered the bullet-riddled body of Anson “Buzz” Clinton along an interstate's exit ramp in Connecticut. Buzz, a former exotic dancer, was married to Kim Carpenter, whose family believed he was an unfit guardian for Kim's daughter, Rebecca. Kim's parents had unsuccessfully sued for custody. Kim's sister, Beth Ann Carpenter—a bright, beautiful real-estate lawyer—became convinced that only Buzz's death would ensure Rebecca's safety. Investigating detectives soon uncovered a twisted trail of murder for hire, obsession, manipulation, and secrets that would tear more than one family apart. The aftermath of this brutal crime would set investigators and prosecutors on a long and twisted path strewn with lies, treachery, and deceit that would cross the Atlantic Ocean before finally bringing justice home. To Deprave and Corrupt

Autor: Catherine Scott

Número de Páginas: 200

Thousands have run afoul of Britain's Obscene Publications Act--from Victorian erotica presses to 21st-century dominatrices. At a time when the internet has made sexually explicit material ubiquitous, why are British traditional media still regulated by a vaguely worded law from 1857? This comprehensive analysis of obscenity in British culture explores what is considered obscene, who gets to decide, and how class, race and gender inform laws regarding adult content. The author describes how obscenity laws disproportionately affect the BDSM subculture, the LGBT community and feminist porn performers.

Over 26,000 total pages .... Background: The Fast and Furious operation was responsible for allowing approximately 2,000 firearms to illegally flow into the hands of criminals, including Mexican drug cartel associates. On December 14, 2010, Customs and Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, a United States Marine, was killed while on patrol just miles from the Mexican border. The firearms found at the scene were semi-automatic rifles that were allowed to walk as part of Operation Fast and Furious. Congressional Republicans have investigated Fast and Furious since January 2011. Over the course of the investigation, the Justice Department has provided false information, stonewalled document requests, produced scores of blacked-out pages and duplicate documents, and refused to comply with two congressional subpoenas. In August 2012, the U.S. House of Representatives Office of General Counsel filed suit against the Justice Department. On January 19, 2016, United States District Judge Amy Berman Jackson issued her opinion and ordered DOJ release documents previously withheld under the President’s executive privilege claim. Autor: Phil Mac Giolla Bhain

Número de Páginas: 292

PREVENTABLE DEATH By Phil Mac Giolla Bhain This timely book explores the appalling death toll of young Irishmen over a twenty-year period. Campaigning journalist Phil Mac Giolla Bhain travelled the length and breadth of the island of Ireland hearing the stories of heart broken families who have been devastated by suicide. Phil also spoke to experts in the field who, despite years of research, cannot answer why the suicide rate among our young men is so high. Finally, Phil develops an analysis why this is a killer of men and not women in modern Ireland and what can be done to neutralise this "tolerated serial killer."

Who's Afraid of the Easter Rising? 1916-2016

Who's Afraid of the Easter Rising? 1916-2016

Autor: James Heartfield , Kevin Rooney

Número de Páginas: 155

One hundred years ago, Easter 1916, Irish revolutionaries rose against the British Empire proclaiming a Republic from the steps of the General Post Office in Dublin. The men and women of the Easter Rising were defeated by the overwhelming force of the British Army, in five days of intense fighting. Their leaders were executed. But the Easter Rising lit a fire that ended with the whole country turning against Westminster’s rule, and founding a nation. But today, the heirs to the Irish state are embarrassed about 1916. They are ashamed that their state owes its origins to a revolution. Along with academics and other commentators in the press and on television they dismiss the Rising as the work of violent fanatics, and the defeat of constitutional politics. Who’s Afraid of the Easter Rising? explains why today’s Dublin elite are recoiling from the origins of their state in a popular struggle. Where the critics paint the Rising as an armed conspiracy, we explain that it was in fact a revolt against war; not a militaristic upsurge, but the first challenge to the awful slaughter of the First World War. The Statesmen of Europe sacrificed millions upon the altar of war. Their...

Sin límites

Sin límites

Autor: John C. Maxwell

Número de Páginas: 322

#1 New York Times bestselling author John C. Maxwell's latest book will enhance the lives of leaders, professionals, and anyone who wants to achieve success and personal growth. We often treat the word capacity as if it were a natural law of limitation. Unfortunately, most of us are much more comfortable defining what we perceive as off limits rather than what's really possible. Could it be that many of us have failed to expand our potential because we have allowed what we perceive as capacity to define us? What if our limits are not really our limits? In his newest book, John Maxwell identifies 17 core capacities. Some of these are abilities we all already possess, such as energy, creativity and leadership. Others are aspects of our lives controlled by our choices, like our attitudes, character, and intentionality. Maxwell examines each of these capacities, and provides clear and actionable advice on how you can increase your potential in each. He will guide you on how to identify, grow, and apply your critical capacities. Once you've blown the "cap" off your capacities, you'll find yourself more successful -- and fulfilled -- in your daily life.

Celebrating Confusion

"Celebrating Confusion"

Autor: Kenneth Nally

Número de Páginas: 311

Though widely lauded as one of the most creative and challenging forces in Irish theatre Frank McGuinness’s plays have often met with a tempestuous reception. This new work details the significance of key productions of his plays in the context of Ireland’s culture and society. Charting McGuinness’s development as a dramatist from The Factory Girls through to Gates of Gold it combines cultural, political and theatrical analysis to position McGuinness as the most significant Irish playwright of his generation. Textual analysis supports considerations of theatrical performance to show how visual art, stagecraft, sculpture and song are central to our understanding of McGuinness’s theatre. Drawing forth the range of sexual, familial and national identities found in McGuinness’s work this book shows the significance of symbols in theatre that often seeks to confuse the simplicities of absolutes in order to show the complexities of difference. Wide-ranging, theoretically astute and written in a lucid and engaging style, Celebrating Confusion will appeal to all readers who are interested in Irish Theatre and its intersection with the politics and culture of contemporary Ireland.

The 'desegregation' of English schools

The 'desegregation' of English schools

Autor: Olivier Esteves

Número de Páginas: 172

Dispersal, or ‘bussing’, was introduced in England in the early-1960s after white parents expressed concerns that the sudden influx of non-Anglophone South Asian children was holding back their own children’s education. It consisted in sending busloads of mostly Asian children to predominantly white suburban schools in an effort to ‘spread the burden’ and to promote linguistic and cultural integration. Although seemingly well-intentioned, dispersal proved a failure: it was based on racial identity rather than linguistic deficiency and ultimately led to an increase in segregation, as bussed pupils were daily confronted with racial bullying in dispersal schools. This is the first ever book on English bussing, based on an in-depth study of local and national archives, alongside interviews with formerly-bussed pupils decades later.

The Enduring Crown Commonwealth

The Enduring Crown Commonwealth

Autor: Michael J. Smith , Stephen Klimczuk-massion

Número de Páginas: 383

The controversial Netflix series The Crown covers the tumultuous period from the Queen’s accession in 1952 to the present day, and so does this book, which explores the rise, decline and—to some—unexpected rebound of the historic UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand alliance. While a post-Brexit and post-Elizabethan Britain seeks a new role in today’s volatile world, its traditional partner countries also recognise the logic of reinvigorating their relationship, based on a multitude of still-strong cultural, economic, political, and military ties, including the monarchy as a uniquely shared global, and not merely British, institution. But this wasn’t always the case. Although in the 1950s commentators spoke of a new "Elizabethan Age" with much postwar hope across the Commonwealth, that optimism quickly faded. By the 1970s, many thought Britain washed up and that Crown and Commonwealth ties and allegiance were becoming obsolete. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the four countries increasingly went their separate ways. So, a groggy time-traveller from that period appearing in London, Toronto, Sydney, or Auckland today would be taken by surprise by the durability of the Crown,...

Burning the Big House

Burning the Big House

Autor: Terence Dooley

Número de Páginas: 367

The gripping story of the tumultuous destruction of the Irish country house, spanning the revolutionary years of 1912 to 1923 During the Irish Revolution nearly three hundred country houses were burned to the ground. These “Big Houses” were powerful symbols of conquest, plantation, and colonial oppression, and were caught up in the struggle for independence and the conflict between the aristocracy and those demanding access to more land. Stripped of their most important artifacts, most of the houses were never rebuilt and ruins such as Summerhill stood like ghostly figures for generations to come. Terence Dooley offers a unique perspective on the Irish Revolution, exploring the struggles over land, the impact of the Great War, and why the country mansions of the landed class became such a symbolic target for republicans throughout the period. Dooley details the shockingly sudden acts of occupation and destruction—including soldiers using a Rembrandt as a dart board—and evokes the exhilaration felt by the revolutionaries at seizing these grand houses and visibly overturning the established order.

Irish Voices from the Great War

Irish Voices from the Great War

Autor: Myles Dungan

Número de Páginas: 329

This pioneering study, first published in 1995, retains its rank as one of the most powerful histories ever written about Irish involvement in World War 1. This year, the centenary of the war, sees its timely re-publication as the Irishmen who fought in that war re-enter the national memory after decades of indifference and hostility. The gradual softening of attitudes over the last twenty years amid great historic change on the island of Ireland, is due in no small part to the efforts of historians, such as Myles Dungan, to tell thousands of forgotten stories. Drawing on the diaries, letters, literary works and oral accounts of soldiers, Myles Dungan tells some of the personal stories of what Irishmen, unionist and nationalist, went through during the Great War and how many of them drew closer together during that horror than at any time since. This volume deals with a selection of the most important battles and campaigns in which the three Irish Divisions participated.
