The History of Tasmania (Vol. 1&2)

Autor: John West

Número de Páginas: 820

In 'The History of Tasmania (Vol. 1&2)', John West embarks on a meticulous exploration of Tasmania's past, deftly weaving together social, political, and economic threads that define the island's unique identity. West's literary style is characterized by a rigorous attention to detail and a narrative that balances academic rigor with engaging prose, making the text both informative and accessible. Published in the mid-19th century, this seminal work is situated within a context of burgeoning Australian nationalism and is pivotal in framing Tasmania's role in the wider historical narrative of Australia. John West, a key figure in Australian historiography and journalism, was deeply influenced by his convictions regarding the importance of documenting and understanding Australia's indigenous and colonial history. His personal experiences and observations throughout Tasmania informed his passionate writing, positioning him as a critical voice in advocating for a more nuanced understanding of Australia's complex past. West's commitment to shedding light on the experiences of Indigenous peoples and colonial subjects is a reflection of his progressive ideals. For readers seeking a...

The History of Tasmania

The History of Tasmania

Autor: John West

Número de Páginas: 1276

The History of Tasmania: Two Volumes Annotated by John West. The first reported sighting of Tasmania by a European was on 24 November 1642 by the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman, who named the island Anthoonij van Diemenslandt, after his sponsor, the Governor of the Dutch East Indies. The name was later shortened to Van Diemen's Land by the British. In 1772, a French expedition led by Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne landed on the island. Captain James Cook also sighted the island in 1777, and numerous other European seafarers made landfalls, adding a colourful array to the names of topographical features. The author takes this opportunity to thank the gentlemen who have allowed him, for several years, the use of their works on the colonies, and valuable original papers; especially the trustees of Lady Franklin's Museum, Messrs. R. Lewis, Hone, Gunn, Joseph Archer, Henty, P. Roberts, Wooley, and Pitcairn. This work includes a section on Tasmanian Zoology; and a useful list of the chief places in this country.

Dying and Dead Seas Climatic Versus Anthropic Causes

Dying and Dead Seas Climatic Versus Anthropic Causes

Autor: Jacques C.j. Nihoul , Peter O. Zavialov , Philip P. Micklin

Número de Páginas: 400

There are incentive indications that the growth of human population, the increasing use and abuse of natural resources combined with climate changes (probably due to anthropic pollution, to some extent) exert a considerable stress on closed (or semi-enclosed) seas and lakes. In many regions of the world, marine and lacustrine hydrosystems are (or have been) the object of severe or fatal alterations, from changes in regional hydrological regimes and/or modifications of the quantity or the quality of water resources associated with (natural or man-made) land reclamation, deterioration of geochemical balances (increased salinity, oxygen's depletion .. . ), mutations of ecosystems (eutrophication, dramatic decrease in biological diversity ... ) to geological disturbances and to the socio-economic perturbations which have been - or may be in the near future - the consequences of them. Seas and lakes are dying all over the world and some may be regarded as already dead and there is an urgent need to try to understand how this is happening and identify the causes of the observed mutations, weighing the relative effects of climatic evolution and anthropic interferences. This book is the...
