Bible Readers and Lay Writers in Early Modern England

Bible Readers and Lay Writers in Early Modern England

Autor: Kate Narveson

Número de Páginas: 246

Bible Readers and Lay Writers in Early Modern England studies how immersion in the Bible among layfolk gave rise to a non-professional writing culture, one of the first instances of ordinary people taking up the pen as part of their daily lives. Kate Narveson examines the development of the culture, looking at the close connection between reading and writing practices, the influence of gender, and the habit of applying Scripture to personal experience. She explores too the tensions that arose between lay and clergy as layfolk embraced not just the chance to read Scripture but the opportunity to create a written record of their ideas and experiences, acquiring a new control over their spiritual self-definition and a new mode of gaining status in domestic and communal circles. Based on a study of print and manuscript sources from 1580 to 1660, this book begins by analyzing how lay people were taught to read Scripture both through explicit clerical instruction in techniques such as note-taking and collation, and through indirect means such as exposure to sermons, and then how they adapted those techniques to create their own devotional writing. The first part of the book concludes...

A Romance of Two Worlds

A Romance of Two Worlds

Autor: Marie Corelli

Número de Páginas: 414

"A Romance of Two Worlds starts with a young heroine, in first person, telling her story of a debilitating illness that includes depression and thoughts of suicide. Her doctor is unable to help her and sends her off on a holiday where she meets a mystical character by the name of Raffello Cellini, a famous Italian artist. Cellini offers her a strange potion which immediately puts her into a tranquil slumber, in which she experiences divine visions. Upon wakening, she craves more. Later, she meets her unnamed guardian angel, who whisks her through infinite solar systems faster than a shooting star while human spirits fly by like gossamer silk. He shares the truth of religion and the secret of human destiny, but still she longs for more. She comes to understand God as pure light and pure love, but it is not enough that she should see and hear these things from the touch of an angel. She wants to master this ability on her own and seeks a oneness with God through a series of meditative disciplines while locked away in a monastery."--Wikipedia.

Alice Walker's Metaphysics

Alice Walker's Metaphysics

Autor: Nagueyalti Warren

Número de Páginas: 221

Catapulted to fame in 1982 with the publication of her third novel—the Pulitzer Prize–winning The Color Purple—Alice Walker has become one of America’s most celebrated and divisive authors. With books such as Meridian and The Third Life of Grange Copeland, Walker’s writing has frequently been cited for messages in support of civil rights and feminism. Above all, however, Walker is a spiritual seeker. Her works are dominated by the search for truth, wholeness, and the spirit that connects everyone and everything. In Alice Walker’s Metaphysics: Literature of Spirit, Nagueyalti Warren examines the philosophy and worldview present in all of Walker’s writing. Warren contends that Walker is a literary theologian, citing the transformative changes that take place in the author’s fictional characters. Warren also points to Walker’s bravery in approaching taboo subjects, her generosity of spirit, and her love for humanity, which are represented throughout her poems, novels, short stories, children’s books, and essays. This analysis is further supplemented by primary sources from Walker’s unpublished material, including notes and scrapbooks. By exploring the...

The Rainbreaker

The Rainbreaker

Autor: Steve Simon

Número de Páginas: 143

You just watched the 6 o'clock news. Now ask yourself, "When is God going to throw in the towel?" God came close once before: The Flood of Genesis. And John, in the last book of the Bible, wrote the newscast for the Armageddon. So where do we stand right now? Steve Simon doesn't presume to know. After all, he's an agnostic. But he does choose to believe in God. However, he's losing his faith in man. On the other hand, he hasn't lost his sense of humor and he has a cat to guide him through the hard times. Makes sense. The Rainbreaker is a fable that attacks some tough moral issues with a lot of good-natured fun. Lest you think that the author is poking fun at God, rest assured. God always comes out on top. It's "stupid human tricks" (such as the failure of nearly all human institutions) that convince Steve Simon that God will not destroy the world but simply replace humans with animals. Or something like that. Adults who've enjoyed "Marley & Me" and the satire of Amrose Bierce, P.J. O'Rourke, and Chris Buckley will laugh out loud at this genre-bender with a message.

The Scavengers' Manifesto

The Scavengers' Manifesto

Autor: Anneli Rufus , Kristan Lawson

Número de Páginas: 305

Destined to become the bible for a bold new subculture of eco-minded people who are creating a lifestyle out of recycling, reusing, and repurposing rather than buying new. An exciting new movement is afoot that brings together environmentalists, anticonsumerists, do-it-yourselfers, bargain-hunters, and treasure-seekers of all stripes. You can see it in the enormous popularity of many websites: millions of Americans are breaking free from the want-get-discard cycle by which we are currently producing approximately 245 million tons of waste every day (that's 4.5 pounds per person, per day!). In The Scavengers' Manifesto, Anneli Rufus and Kristan Lawson invite readers to discover one of the most gratifying (and inexpensive) ways there is to go green. Whether it's refurbishing a discarded wooden door into a dining-room table; finding a bicycle on freecycle.org; or giving a neighbor who just had a baby that cute never-used teddy bear your child didn't bond with, in this book Rufus and Lawson chart the history of scavenging and the world-changing environmental and spiritual implications of "Scavenomics," and offer readers a framework for adopting scavenging as a philosophy and a way of...

Pynchon and the Political

Pynchon and the Political

Autor: Samuel Thomas

Número de Páginas: 214

Thomas Pynchon's writing has been widely regarded as an exemplary form of postmodern fiction. It is characterized as genre-defying and enigmatic, as a series of complex and esoteric language games. This study attempts to demonstrate, however, that an oblique yet compelling sense of the "political" Pynchon disappears all too easily under the mantle of postmodernity. Innovative and unsettling discussions of freedom, war, labour, poverty, community, democracy, and totalitarianism are passed over in favour of constrictive scientific metaphors and theoretical play. Against this current, this study analyses Pynchon's fiction in terms of its radical dimension, showing how it points to new directions in the relationship between the political and the aesthetic.

Fabutron

Fabutron

Autor: Feroz

Número de Páginas: 227

The Rooster Criesis a compelling literary work that bespeaks the hope that is unearthed after the torrent of calamity strikes. It challenges the reader to wakeup and be conscious and mindful of self and community. The author illustrates the trine reality of being a Gay Negro Latino male, a third class citizen, raised in the United States, part of the 13th generation of this nation, the famed Generation X (1961-1981) the ignored generation. The artist brings to life, his 40 years of being raised during times of civil unrest (1969), to the times of pandemic paranoia of Aids (1980s), to times of national tragedy (9-11-01), to times of global recession (2009), bringing to bear what thirsting after the American dream means to him. Feroz uses his art of Astrology to further comprehend his jihad of life, helping him navigate through the transgressions of personal loss and broken dreams. Outlining the existential woe felt, when one cant seem to fit into society at large. Hes expressed in a fashion of honesty that would do Baldwin, Williams and Huxley proud. Feroz explains his Audacity of Hope, comically interjecting musical pop culture, to involve the reader in the essence of the times of ...
