The Oxford Handbook of Virginia Woolf

The Oxford Handbook of Virginia Woolf

Autor: Anne E. Fernald

Número de Páginas: 689

With thirty-nine original chapters from internationally prominent scholars, The Oxford Handbook of Virginia Woolf is designed for scholars and graduate students. Feminist to the core, each chapter examines an aspect of Woolf's achievement and legacy. Each contribution offers an overview that is at once fresh and thoroughly grounded in prior scholarship. Six sections focus on Woolf's life, her texts, her experiments, her life as a professional, her contexts, and her afterlife. Opening chapters on Woolf's life address the powerful influences of family, friends, and home. The section on her works moves chronologically, emphasizing Woolf's practice of writing essays and reviews alongside her fiction. Chapters on Woolf's experimentalism pay special attention to the literariness of Woolf's writing, with opportunity to trace its distinctive watermark while 'Professions of Writing', invites readers to consider how Woolf worked in cultural fields including and extending beyond the Hogarth Press and the TLS. The 'Contexts' section moves beyond writing to depict her engagement with the natural world as well as the political, artistic, and popular culture of her time. The final section on...

Architecture and Ugliness

Architecture and Ugliness

Autor: Wouter Van Acker , Thomas Mical

Número de Páginas: 306

Whatever 'ugliness' is, it remains a problematic category in architectural aesthetics – alternately vilified and appropriated, used either to shock or to invert conventions of architecture. This book presents sixteen new scholarly essays which rethink ugliness in recent architecture – from Brutalism to eclectic postmodern architectural productions – and together offer a diverse reappraisal of the history and theory of postmodern architecture and design. The essays address both broad theoretical questions on ugliness and postmodern aesthetics, as well as more specific analyses of significant architectural examples dating from the last decades of the twentieth century. The book attends to the diverse relations between the aesthetic register of ugliness and closely connected aesthetic concepts such as the monstrous, the ordinary, disgust, the excessive, the grotesque, the interesting, the impure and the sublime. This volume does not simply document the history of a postmodern anti-aesthetic through case studies. Instead, it aims to shed light on aesthetic problems that have been largely overlooked in the agenda of architectural theory. This book answers in detail the questions: ...

Cineaste on Film Criticism, Programming, and Preservation in the New Millennium

Cineaste on Film Criticism, Programming, and Preservation in the New Millennium

Autor: Cynthia Lucia , Rahul Hamid

Número de Páginas: 393

Digital technology and the Internet have revolutionized film criticism, programming, and preservation in deeply paradoxical ways. The Internet allows almost everyone to participate in critical discourse, but many print publications and salaried positions for professional film critics have been eliminated. Digital technologies have broadened access to filmmaking capabilities, as well as making thousands of older films available on DVD and electronically. At the same time, however, fewer older films can be viewed in their original celluloid format, and newer, digitally produced films that have no "material" prototype are threatened by ever-changing servers that render them obsolete and inaccessible. Cineaste, one of the oldest and most influential publications focusing on film, has investigated these trends through a series of symposia with the top film critics, programmers, and preservationists in the United States and beyond. This volume compiles several of these symposia: "Film Criticism in America Today" (2000), "International Film Criticism Today" (2005), "Film Criticism in the Age of the Internet" (2008), "Film Criticism: The Next Generation" (2013), "The Art of Repertory Film ...

The Story of Looking

The Story of Looking

Autor: Mark Cousins

Número de Páginas: 692

The acclaimed author and filmmaker's investigation into the human gaze through history, art and science, paints an illuminating portrait of our culture. Looking can be an act of empathy or aggression. It can provoke desire or express it. And from the blurry, edgeless world we inhabit as infants to the landscape of screens we grow into, looking can define us. In The Story of Looking, filmmaker and writer Mark Cousins takes us on a tour - in words and images - through the development of the human gaze over the course of a lifetime, and the ways that looking has changed through the centuries. From great works of art to tourist photographs, from cityscapes to cinema, through science and protest, propaganda and refusals to look, the false mirrors and great visionaries of looking, this book illuminates how we construct as well as receive the things we see. The Story of Looking is a photo album and an art gallery, a road movie and a visual grammar: once you've read it, you'll never see things the same way again. Shortlisted for the Saltire Society Non-Fiction Award "A wide-ranging history of looking, you will gaze at it in wonder."—Ian Sansom, The Guardian, UK
