Qu’implique le choix du vers dans le roman, à une époque où la prose s’est déjà imposée comme forme privilégiée du genre ? C’est à cette question que la présente étude soumet le corpus des derniers romans arthuriens en vers, rédigés entre 1260 et 1380. Le choix atypique du vers dans ces romans interroge les valeurs esthétiques attribuées à chaque forme au cours de ces siècles de mutation que sont le XIIIe et le XIVe siècle : l’écriture en vers résiste, mais est en décalage avec la forme irrémédiablement favorisée. À partir de ces textes, l’étude trace l’abandon du vers au profit de la prose dans le roman et sa spécialisation lyrique, engageant ainsi des réflexions sur la conjonction entre forme et genre. Ce corpus invite encore à théoriser la position tardive qu’occupent ces romans dans la trajectoire historique du roman arthurien en vers. Des interactions entre vers tardif et prose émergeante découle une véritable poétique de la tardivité, dont l’étude rend compte.

Polémique, la question de l’(in-)existence de l’auteur médiéval a souvent été abordée à travers le prisme du sujet, dont l’auteur serait progressivement devenu l’avatar littéraire, régnant en maître sur le système esthétique, éditorial et juridique moderne. Pour renouveler le débat, le présent ouvrage entend contourner cette confusion téléologique entre auteur et subjectivité afin de mieux comprendre en contexte un chapitre clé de l’histoire de la notion : l’avènement, au Moyen Âge central (1100-1340), des premiers manuscrits organisés autour de figures d’auteurs francophones. Par l’analyse d’un corpus original de vingt-cinq manuscrits consacrés à dix-sept auteurs, on arguera que ces recueils sont moins le fait de consciences « proto-modernes », soucieuses de contrôler la diffusion de leur œuvre, que le fruit d’un effort éditorial collectif et planifié pour bâtir des figures auctoriales vernaculaires, et ce, dans un dialogue décapant, quoiqu’empreint de piété, avec les conceptions antiques de l’auteur.

Matilda Tomaryn Bruckner provides the first book-length examination of all four verse continuations that follow Chrétien's unfinished Grail story, a powerful site of rewriting from the late twelfth through the fifteenth centuries. By focusing on the dialogue between Chrétien and the verse continuators, this study demonstrates how the patterns and puzzles inscribed in the first author's romance continue to guide his successors, whose additions and reinventions throw new light back on the problems medieval readers and writers found in the mother text: questions about society and the individual; love, gender relations, and family ties; chivalry, violence, and religion; issues of collective authorship and doubled heroes, interpretation, rewriting, and canon formation. La notion de style ne va pas de soi. La question se complexifie encore lorsqu’on analyse les productions artistiques du Moyen Âge. Peut-on parler du style médiéval ? La diversité des qualificatifs qui le rattachent étroitement à une époque, à un espace, à une tradition, montre à quel point on reste encore démuni tant pour le définir que pour « inventer » des méthodes d’analyse. La stylistique, discipline universitaire reconnue et célébrée pour sa richesse, ne peut être convoquée telle quelle pour approcher les œuvres médiévales. Il convient donc de s’interroger à nouveau, de se demander comment cerner dans le domaine des études de médiévistique cette notion apparemment familière ? Étant donné d’une part la « mouvance » des textes, les variations multiples d’une œuvre à l’autre, les interactions entre les arts, et d’autre part le caractère traditionnel de la culture médiévale, quelles approches ménager ?
