Magic and Witchcraft

Magic and Witchcraft

Autor: Ruth Clydesdale

Número de Páginas: 397

"A cogent, straight-talking and nuanced work to aid anyone who wants a solid understanding of the origins and evolution of witchcraft." - David Southwell, author and curator of @HooklandGuide From ancient Greece and Rome to the birth of the New Witchcraft, the history of this enthralling subject is skillfully told in this richly illustrated book. Witchcraft was once used to influence the unpredictable aspects of life such as crops, health and livestock protection. With people feeling powerless against ill fortune, it became easy to blame malevolent magic and the figure of the witch. Witchcraft today is a benevolent religion that is unrelated to the historic fantasy, but which often employs ancient magical techniques such as poppets and charms. This fascinating history enables the reader to see the timeline for how magic and witchcraft - and perceptions of it - has developed over the centuries. From the glamour of witches depicted in art, such as Circe, Medea, Morgan le Fay and Nimue, to famous historical incidents such as the witch trials and Christian suppression of Pagan temples, the reader will be led on a journey of discovery that is as visually exciting as it is informative....

Astrology through History

Astrology through History

Autor: William E. Burns

Número de Páginas: 432

Alphabetically arranged entries cover the history of astrology from ancient Mesopotamia to the 21st century. In addition to surveying the Western tradition, the book explores Islamic, Indian, East Asian, and Mesoamerican astrology. The field of astrology is growing rapidly, as historians recognize its centrality to the intellectual life of the past and sociologists and anthropologists treat its importance in a number of modern cultures. Despite the historical and cultural significance of the subject, most reference works on astrology focus on instructional techniques and are written by astrologers with little or no interest in the history of the topic. This book instead offers an objective treatment of astrology across world history from ancient Mesopotamia to the present. The book provides alphabetically arranged entries by expert contributors writing on such topics as horoscopes, court astrologers, Renaissance astrology, and comets. While it considers the Western tradition, it also treats Islamic, Indian, East Asian, and Mesoamerican astrology. In doing so, it explores the role of astrology in shaping science, literature, religion, art, and other defining cultural traditions....

Laus Platonici Philosophi

Laus Platonici Philosophi

Número de Páginas: 396

This collection of essays honours Marsilio Ficino (1433-1499) as a Platonic philosopher. Ficino was not the first translator of Plato in the Renaissance, but he was the first to translate the entire corpus of Platonic works, and to emphasise their relevance for contemporary readers. The present work is divided into two sections: the first explores aspects of Ficino’s own thought and the sources which he used. The second section follows aspects of his influence in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The papers presented here deepen and enrich our understanding of Ficino, and of the philosophical tradition in which he was working, and they offer a new platform for future studies on Ficino and his legacy in Renaissance philosophy. Contributors include: Unn Irene Aasdalen, Constance Blackwell, Paul Richard Blum, Stephen Clucas, Ruth Clydesdale, Brian Copenhaver, John Dillon, Peter J. Forshaw, James Hankins, Hiro Hirai, Sarah Klitenic Wear, David Leech, Letizia Panizza, Valery Rees, and Stéphane Toussaint.

The Arabic Influences on Early Modern Occult Philosophy

The Arabic Influences on Early Modern Occult Philosophy

Abject Eroticism in Northern Renaissance Art

Abject Eroticism in Northern Renaissance Art

Autor: Yvonne Owens

Número de Páginas: 313

Hans Baldung Grien, the most famous apprentice and close friend of German artist Albrecht Dürer, was known for his unique and highly eroticised images of witches. In paintings and woodcut prints, he gave powerful visual expression to late medieval tropes and stereotypes, such as the poison maiden, venomous virgin, the Fall of Man, 'death and the maiden' and other motifs and eschatological themes, which mingled abject and erotic qualities in the female body. Yvonne Owens reads these images against the humanist intellectual milieu of Renaissance Germany, showing how classical and medieval medicine and natural philosophy interpreted female anatomy as toxic, defective and dangerously beguiling. She reveals how Hans Baldung exploited this radical polarity to create moralising and titillating portrayals of how monstrous female sexuality victimised men and brought them low. Furthermore, these images issued from-and contributed to-the contemporary understanding of witchcraft as a heresy that stemmed from natural 'feminine defect,' a concept derived from Aristotle. Offering new and provocative interpretations of Hans Baldung's iconic witchcraft imagery, this book is essential reading for...

Think to New Worlds

Think to New Worlds

Autor: Joshua Blu Buhs

Número de Páginas: 395

How a writer who investigated scientific anomalies inspired a factious movement and made a lasting impact on American culture. Flying saucers. Bigfoot. Frogs raining from the sky. Such phenomena fascinated Charles Fort, the maverick writer who scanned newspapers, journals, and magazines for reports of bizarre occurrences: dogs that talked, vampires, strange visions in the sky, and paranormal activity. His books of anomalies advanced a philosophy that saw science as a small part of a larger system in which truth and falsehood continually transformed into one another. His work found a ragged following of skeptics who questioned not only science but the press, medicine, and politics. Though their worldviews varied, they shared compelling questions about genius, reality, and authority. At the center of this community was adman, writer, and enfant terrible Tiffany Thayer, who founded the Fortean Society and ran it for almost three decades, collecting and reporting on every manner of oddity and conspiracy. In Think to New Worlds, Joshua Blu Buhs argues that the Fortean effect on modern culture is deeper than you think. Fort’s descendants provided tools to expand the imagination,...

DON'T FORGET TO COVER THE PIG

DON'T FORGET TO COVER THE PIG

Autor: Dick Reese

Número de Páginas: 309

Sight unseen, Americans Ruth and Dick Reese, with three young children in tow, migrated to Australia’s remote island of Tasmania. With zero farming experience, they bought a 125-acre farm on a dead-end road near the quaint village of Port Cygnet. Perpetually in the poorhouse, Ruth’s entrepreneurial spark ignited a series of businesses selling homegrown products to Australians—from wool to nuts to dried fruits to Indian fry bread—and a quest to promote her 400-pound pet pig, Matilda, in sunscreen commercials. Living in a house alongside orphaned lambs and goat kids and an alcoholic rooster, outside, it was worse with wandering sheep and goats, an illicit Clydesdale and pig love affair, and poisonous snakes. Before escaping to the exotic land of your dreams, have a read.
