Dead Men Flying

Dead Men Flying

Autor: General Patrick Henry Brady , Meghan Brady Smith

Número de Páginas: 307

Viet Nam may be the only war we ever fought, or perhaps that was ever fought, in which the heroism of the American soldier was accompanied by humanitarianism unmatched in the annals of warfare. And the humanitarianism took place during the heat of the battle. The GI fixed as he fought, he cured and educated and built in the middle of the battle. He truly cared for, and about, those people. What other Army has ever done that? Humanitarianism was America's great victory in Viet Nam. Spearheading the humanitarian efforts were the air ambulance operations, call-sign Dust Off, the most dangerous of all aviation operations, which rescued some one million souls in Viet Nam. Dead Men Flying is the story of Charles Kelly, the father of Dust Off, who gave his life to save Dust Off—the greatest life-saver ever. His dying words—When I have your wounded—set the standard for combat medicine to this day. It is also the story of the author, Medal of Honor recipient General Patrick Brady, who learned from Charles Kelly and struggled to meet his standard. Brady led the 54th Medical Detachment as it rescued over twenty-one thousand wounded—enemy and friendly—in ten months, while sustaining ...

...y no se lo trago la tierra / ...And the Earth Did Not Devour Him

Autor: Tomàs Rivera

Número de Páginas: 164

ñI tell you, God could care less about the poor. Tell me, why must we live here like this? What have we done to deserve this? YouÍre so good and yet you suffer so much,î a young boy tells his mother in Tomàs RiveraÍs classic novel about the migrant worker experience. Outside the chicken coop that is their home, his father wails in pain from the unbearable cramps brought on by sunstroke after working in the hot fields. The young boy canÍt understand his parentsÍ faith in a god that would impose such horrible suffering, poverty and injustice on innocent people. Adapted into the award-winning film ƒand the earth did not swallow him and recipient of the first award for Chicano literature, the Premio Quinto Sol, in 1970, RiveraÍs masterpiece recounts the experiences of a Mexican-American community through the eyes of a young boy. Forced to leave their home in search of work, the migrants are exploited by farmers, shopkeepers, even other Mexican Americans, and the boy must forge his identity in the face of exploitation, death and disease, constant moving and conflicts with school officials. In this new edition of a powerful novel comprised of short vignettes, Rivera writes...

¿La historia inventada?

¿La historia inventada?

Autor: Manuel Barrios Aguilera , Mercedes García-arenal

Número de Páginas: 514

Discusses the lead books discovered in Sacromonte, near Granada, Spain, in the 16th century. Written in a combination of Arabic and Latin, the books were hailed as early Christian texts as important as the Dead Sea Scrolls, but were condemned by the Vatican as Islamic heresies. Today most scholars believe the books were fabrications intended to promote toleration of the language, dress and customs of Christian Moriscos in the face of increasing hostility from the Spanish Inquisition and the Castilian state.

Jesús, entrenador para la vida

Jesús, entrenador para la vida

Autor: Laurie Beth Jones

Papers Presented at the Fourteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies Held in Oxford 2003

Autor: Frances Margaret Young , Mark J. Edwards , Paul M. Parvis

Número de Páginas: 596

Papers presented at the Fourteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 2003 (see also Studia Patristica 39, 40, 41 and 42). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.

La Ninez Del Padre Roxas

La Ninez Del Padre Roxas

Autor: Lope De Vega , Diego L. Bastianutti

Número de Páginas: 292

La niñez del Padre Roxas presents the critical edition of a play typical of the 17th century Spanish genre, «comedia de santos.» Professor Bastianutti has intended to give the student and specialist in the field both an authoritative edition and an insight into Lope's creative process. In a play such as this, for which Lope could not rely on an official biography of the protagonist, he had to balance the need for objectivity with the requirement that the play be dramatically interesting. In Lope's hands the «comedia de santos» became a supreme example of «synaesthetic art form» providing an optical, sensory devotion, a means of sublimating the subject loved by the people. The author examines the extensive use that Lope made of the sermons and paintings occasioned by the death and funeral of Padre Roxas, and concludes that Lope resolved the dilemma of objectivity in a subject devoid of reliable biographical data by incorporating in the play the information gleaned from the numerous sermons preached and paintings displayed during the funeral of Roxas.
